i saw this at me local cineworld & thought it was complete SHITE!!
all i could make of it was a load of luvvies walking on stage at different intervals saying pretentious piffle like "...I HAVE FORT THE WAR, I HAVE WORSHIPPED HIM & NOW AM HERE!!"
i have seen numerous shows at the NT (f*** the ROYAL NATIONAL THEATRE!!) & this is by far the worst production i've ever seen. overrated & TERRIBLE!!
It's so odd for me because I have only ever heard this in French, and the best reading I think is by Edwige Feuillere, but Helen is electrifying in everything she does..and for this being in English, it is done very well. No surprise there. <3 Helen
What an absolute piece of garbage!!! I am very fond of HM, but this WRONG WRONG WRONG. Racine wrote this in Alexandrine verse, and it MUST BE READ THAT WAY!! God, we have become so politically correct that we applaude anything!
Ted Hughes thought it was basically impossible for Phedre to be translated accurately in English in Alexandrine verse. I think Hughes's translation is electrifying, far more than any other that was not written in prose. I think most people (myself included) applauded this production not because of the translation so much as the magnificent performance of Helen Mirren.
I don't like Helen Mirren, but as soon as she got to her feet she made Hippolytus look like a member of cast of surburban amateurs

Its a shame they didn't film it and bring it out on DVD. Im sure it would have sold well.
