Small town sheriffs are the local Bosses. They are the law and are above the law in their own eyes. The sheriff's photos were only of Mary when RM's character was there. Why was the Rm Character not in those photos? Yea, the sheriff did it and then tried to pin it on the perfect patsy. Any way you slice it comes up a crime of passion.

I know a man at age 30, no prior's accused by his ex of killing a new guy as he left her house. NO Evidence, no witnesses...the jury (who were all busy people) said "we will go for guilty and he will get out on apeal. an Appelt atty's retainer is $100 GRAND and this now 50 year old man, who still says I did not do it, and I believe him...rots in jail. Pray for Michael, please.
There was a story on Unsolved Mysteries some years go sounded very similiar to this story. The man was around 18 or so and had some mental problems. He was arrested for the murder of a young lady he was friends with. Many people came out to say there was no way he could have even done this. I don't know what ever happened but there was more evidence as time went by that was pointing in a different direction then the man they had arrrested.
Maybe it is a revenge story? When he was a kid we see him burn the house (or did he burn it?). Was his mom killed inside with the other man? Maybe the other man was the Sheriff (younger) and he didn't die. As revenge we see that Mary is killed (by the now older sheriff?) and his trailer burned. Both times a woman dies (comes to hazard) and a home is burned. He seems to look confused and struggling with a secret...
This video always led me to believe the Sheriff did it, although it's probably a made up story, it was realistic enough to me back when I first saw it.

Ok I've got my opinion but it's exactly this...only an opinion. What if the jealous boyfriend was the sheriff (not the boy in the car) and the sheriff was just furious about it? What if Mary saw the sheriff while in the car and not Richard? Sheriff killed Mary and needed a way out...unfortunately RM's scarf got caught in the bush...perfect for the sheriff.
Anyway...it's just my opinion and largerly debatable.
What is not debatable is that this is a great song :)
I've seen the second video, slightly different from this one. At the middle a female voice says "You seem to be the only one who really understand me". At the end the same female voice says "I know it might sound weird...I don't know what I'll do (...can't understand..) my jealous boyfriend". During the discussion the (supposedly) lawyer defending Richard says that it would be needed more than a scarf to jail RM and that the scenery seems more to lead to a suicide.
I'm surprised I never asked myself who killed Mary.
On the first approach I would say the sheriff because he never had a doubt about RM guiltyness. For jealousy? That would be really plain and obvious. For the fact that simply he didn't want RM to stand around cause he knew something by his past that's better not known by others? At the point to sacrifice the only person that got in touch with RM?
I adore this song for the music and the lyrics. Everytime I listened to it, I was seeing things from Richard Marx's point of view: surrounded by a world that considered him "not right" since the age of seven, he found a person (Mary) who saw him "behind the rumors and the lies". But this dream was not going to last and he lost Mary and had to get away from Hazard, city "cold" not only as far as the weather is concerned but also for the people living in it.
I think "Who killed Mary" was the sheriff. Since the beginning of the clip he says the couple. In questioning the sheriff requiring him to confess and end of the clip he pursues Mary while she runs.
you and me both...even wrote a follow up fan fiction resolving everything, clearing him..and helping him find love again. Am I the only one who wished for such a song?
On the other version of this song (not clear to look at), there is a person named Kent....he noticed the same thing I did in this one...she WAS in a car with someone else and "Richard" saw them and she saw his face when he saw her!! It's such a tragedy that Marx has several songs already under his belt, by the time this song came out. It really is sad he had to release such sappy, pop-dreck, before this - a mature, well told story, very gritty, morbid and dark. It saddens me more he's not even remembered for this song, when it was truly his best work.
And I will admit, I was never really a Richard Marx fan, but this was an absolutely brilliant bit of songwriting. And I gotta give credit, where credit is due.
It's the sheriff, the end actually gives you the answer. Mary says "you know everyone says I should be afraid of you but I am not" is not to Richard's character, but the sheriff as we see in the video. It's a small town, certain people had power and the rest keep their mouth shut, while the free are driven out or worse. That's my take. Haunting song when I first heard it in the 80's and twenty years later it still is.
Personally, of course I think it's just a set of circumstances presented in the videos that leave the viewer to wonder about. There IS NO answer, and that just adds to the mystery. Each character under suspicion in the video was a possible suspect -- even Marx. Back then, I was convinced it was the sheriff. But now, as an older man, I'm not so sure. The Marx character was certainly troubled... sure, he loved Mary with all his heart. But that's never kept troubled men from murdering.

i absolutely love this song and i have been trying to work out what happened.i believe his mother was murdered by the locals who set fire to the house which he managed to escape.he was in love with mary but it was purely platonic and when he stumbled on her in the car he ran off to which his scarfe got caught on the branch.she got dressed and ran after him and saw the scarfe which she wrapped around her neck and walked along the river.

I just talked to Richard Marx and he said Groucho Did it! And her name wasnt Mary, is was Thelma Finklestein! She was a Nazi Jew, and ther're the worst kind so they had to kill her. Only thing by dumping her in the river, they never got the smell off the fish!

Ok I've got my opinion but it's exactly this...only an opinion. What if the jealous boyfriend was the sheriff (not the boy in the car) and the sheriff was just furious about it? What if Mary saw the sheriff while in the car and not Richard? Sheriff killed Mary and needed a way out...unfortunately RM's scarf got caught in the bush...perfect for the sheriff.
Anyway...it's just my opinion and largerly debatable.
What is not debatable is that this is a great song :)

I've seen the second video, slightly different from this one. At the middle a female voice says "You seem to be the only one who really understand me". At the end the same female voice says "I know it might sound weird...I don't know what I'll do (...can't understand..) my jealous boyfriend". During the discussion the (supposedly) lawyer defending Richard says that it would be needed more than a scarf to jail RM and that the scenery seems more to lead to a suicide.

I'm surprised I never asked myself who killed Mary.
On the first approach I would say the sheriff because he never had a doubt about RM guiltyness. For jealousy? That would be really plain and obvious. For the fact that simply he didn't want RM to stand around cause he knew something by his past that's better not known by others? At the point to sacrifice the only person that got in touch with RM?

I adore this song for the music and the lyrics. Everytime I listened to it, I was seeing things from Richard Marx's point of view: surrounded by a world that considered him "not right" since the age of seven, he found a person (Mary) who saw him "behind the rumors and the lies". But this dream was not going to last and he lost Mary and had to get away from Hazard, city "cold" not only as far as the weather is concerned but also for the people living in it.

I think "Who killed Mary" was the sheriff. Since the beginning of the clip he says the couple. In questioning the sheriff requiring him to confess and end of the clip he pursues Mary while she runs.

On the other version of this song (not clear to look at), there is a person named Kent....he noticed the same thing I did in this one...she WAS in a car with someone else and "Richard" saw them and she saw his face when he saw her!! I think he's closer to just WHO DID kill her....she did, because of "guilty" feelings!! By all means the sheriff was rotten to the core, but.........we may NEVER know!! hahahaha Can guarantee, if you saw it back then, you'll wonder every time you see it now!!

the sheriff saw them and was jealous as he loved her and he killed her as you can guess when she's running from the sherif's car (frame 3.47) , have you noticed how he spied on her (frame 1.00) ? then followed her ( frame 1.26),then court them kissing ( frame 1.46) then mr marx ran away 'cause under caution , then mr sheriff had all the time to do his nasty work on poor mary....I love this song.

It's such a tragedy that Marx has several songs already under his belt, by the time this song came out. It really is sad he had to release such sappy, pop-dreck, before this - a mature, well told story, very gritty, morbid and dark. It saddens me more he's not even remembered for this song, when it was truly his best work.
And I will admit, I was never really a Richard Marx fan, but this was an absolutely brilliant bit of songwriting. And I gotta give credit, where credit is due.

It's the sheriff, the end actually gives you the answer. Mary says "you know everyone says I should be afraid of you but I am not" is not to Richard's character, but the sheriff as we see in the video. It's a small town, certain people had power and the rest keep their mouth shut, while the free are driven out or worse. That's my take. Haunting song when I first heard it in the 80's and twenty years later it still is.

Personally, of course I think it's just a set of circumstances presented in the videos that leave the viewer to wonder about. There IS NO answer, and that just adds to the mystery. Each character under suspicion in the video was a possible suspect -- even Marx. Back then, I was convinced it was the sheriff. But now, as an older man, I'm not so sure. The Marx character was certainly troubled... sure, he loved Mary with all his heart. But that's never kept troubled men from murdering.

i absolutely love this song and i have been trying to work out what happened.i believe his mother was murdered by the locals who set fire to the house which he managed to escape.he was in love with mary but it was purely platonic and when he stumbled on her in the car he ran off to which his scarfe got caught on the branch.she got dressed and ran after him and saw the scarfe which she wrapped around her neck and walked along the river.
