@pilottage M42 is part of the Messier list of objects (mostly) added by French astronomer Charles Messier to his list of objects. His first list was published in 1774 and so the question is whether Charles Messier may have named the Orion Nebula number 42 on his list for some reason . Perhaps he was a Freemason and this was of some symbolic importance? I don't know
The term "hermetic" is used to describe so many things, i haven't heard anyone break it down as well as he did in this lecture.
