The projector behind it projects onto the cubes and the cubes essentially react to grayscale levels on each cube and decide where the cube should be. If it's darker, it might recede, but if it's brighter, it might extend.

Simple as that. :)

VJing and art of course, and for a stage or for dancing or dance performances. you could do tons of stuff! or maybe a changing wall in your home allowing you to create different small rooms or "cliffs" to sit on.. if the cubes are stable enough that is?
