I am glad to say that as far as I know, George was not involved with the drug at any of the times I encountered him. That first time we met when I was just a kid, was when he was the summer before his Heisman season. He was in top form and there is no way he was using at that point. Then, all those years later when I saw him, it was after his highly publicized coke problem, and as far as I could tell, he was clean as a whistle. Drug addiction can be ugly. PARTICULARLY cocaine and heroine.

I was just a kid when George was racking up the records at USC. I was 11 years old and attended Jim Carlen Football Camp at the university. George went out of his way to genuinely befriended most of us. I say "genuinely" because 7 years later, when I was attending USC myself, I went down to the Hall of Captains at the stadium prior to gametime. George was there. Smiling, as always, he said "Hey Ted, how ya been?" That meant a lot to this freshman. And it speaks volumes about George's character.

George was really great through High School -Duluth HS in Georgia, but his cousin Napoleon (nick Po-Po) was a whole lot better. Got to chasing skirts and not keeping his nose clean got him in a lot of trouble and trowed out of college his freshman year. Po once got turned around on the 10 yard line and went all the way to the wrong end-zone and still got his bearings and went all the way back to score. Other team was less than awesome but also was not a slouch either.
