i have the same problem as @LegendaryGoldDragon my usb connector just fell in just around 30 minutes im so upset i dont know what to do all my data is on there :(
I've had a 500 Gig Seagate External Hard drive that looks a lot like you 1.5Tera External for aroudn 5-Years now (Bought in 2006) THE ONLY problem I've had was similar to other peoples, I droped it once and the inside USB connector fell in.
It took FOREVER to figure out how to open the damn thing without tearing it apart.
@LegendaryGoldDragon See i needed mine to be opend quickly, i took it to a computer shop and it took them ages to figure out how to get into the case. In the end i gave them permission to just rip it apart. Id NEVER buy seagate again, ive got a buffalo hard drive now and never looked back!
@LegendaryGoldDragon Try turning it over. I did and the clicking stopped immediately. it's still working fine and responding ok??? but I'm still looking around on youtube for help!
Okay, it seems like I'm the only person, who have not had any problems with a Seagate USB external drive, except that I dropped mine 3 times, and it stopped working. Yes, I know, it was my own damn fault...
So, I bought a new cheap but solid and great 3.5" drive, opened the old enclosure, swapped the drives, and it works.
I haven't recovered all my old data yet (it won't be cheap), as it's a "head-crash" (the read-write "head" touches the spinning platters, and scratches them.)
thats exactly same problem as mine if i take out the usb cable the green light stays on but when plug into pc via usb says not malfunctioning so to me seagate need to update this or something
I think the guy made it clear the drive starts to detect if he plays with it. So it might not be firmware. I'd say your best bet would be to open the enclosure CAREFULLY( find some instructions). Internally connect the drive to a computer and get your data back. IF your data is more important then voiding the 5 year warranty.
hope you got this sorted out now, but it would have been very easy to take out the internal hard drive from the casing and put it in a new one for about £8.
These usb seagate drives are horrible. Ive had two of them both break off. The usb connection is very flimsy and will eventuall break off. You can try soldering in back on, but first extract the data by taking the case off and using a sata cable and hooking it up to a pc. I wouldnt suggest buying a seagate usb drive at this present time as their craftsmanship is getting worse. Or just use it as an internal drive, but its not why you bought it in the first place.
you can actually open the external black case on it if it is just the connection, inside is a metal case with the usb port that sticks out. Even the metal case you can remove to get to the HD itself. Test if connecting to usb that way solves the problem, then its just a loose connection.
If u send it back, all data are lost (in 99% of situations). About replacement... first they try to fix the problem, if only that fails... u can get a new HDD. The fastest and the best way to deal with the problem it's to buy an WD, that's what I use since... ever (I'm using WD for more then 10 years, about 5-6 units, from intrernal to external units and never ever had any problem. Now I have 2 SATA HDD and one external)
They may fix your issue but its best to check with the original company maybe contact em

I need help with my Freeagent Go 500GB portable Hard Drive.
I can't access the data that I have had on it.
My computer is telling me to reformat my Seagate 500GB Freeagent Hard Drive.
The drive icon shows up in My Computer or Computer and in Computer Management as active/online.
What could be the problem with it?
Could it be the registry or firmware?
