Dont forget as signal. Primary function of a smoke grenade is to signal as it take most of them 45 seconds to reach the full force of the smoke, not 4-5 seconds like you see in games. And really if ur trying to damage you would just throw your standard M67 frag because your more concerned with killing than concealing your target.
Yep, but why would you mark your position with an obvious smoke screen? I mean is it that hard for a machine gunner to just blast away into that smoke screen? Or maybe just toss a few frags? Better to mark them with colored smoke for your Air support lol. Its always better to just not be seen in the 1st place though lol. I had the intention f joining the US Army out of highschool. I could have made officer no problem and I was in good shape. I slaughtered the tests they gave and I was in good shape. But in 11th grade i found out that I had epilepsy, and though mine is not severe and does not inhibit my daily life at all, I have to take medication and the US military prohibits all Epileptics to join unless they have been off medication and seizure free for 5 years.
It really bothered me but i found that i could still contribute with my knowledge of ballistics and weapons. I am trying to get involved in producing better body or vehicle armor. I learned my stuff from expierenced soldiers and hands on time with weapons(legally of course).

Sure a machine gunner can shoot into a smokescreen, but if you throw a couple in different places and only move behind one, the result is a lot of wasted ammo. Even if they do fire into it, they can't aim at anything.
Throwing range is 50 metres at most, if the enemy is across a field, frags wont reach him, but smoke might hide you.
Coloured smoke is good for marking LZs but wont reach far enough to use as an airstrike marker.
They have grenades that do no damage. They use smoke grenade for signaling air support that its your position or the bad guys. The WP grenade you see above does cause damage in close quarters though lol.
WP can indeed cause nasty wounds, being in a WP cloud is like being in burning mist. The no-damage grenades you're talking about is probably offensive grenades which cause concussion at close range but no fragmentation, meaning you can attack while the enemy is getting shellshocked.
I'm not in the army as Sweden only accepts the 6000 most fit 18-year olds each year for the entire armed forces (army, navy, airforce and special units). Instead, I've dedicated myself to studying war and weapons.

Those definitely look like WP grenades. White phosphorous particles cause second to third degree burns and the smoke is also an irritant.
