i have an extremely important question- i have a hrd- is there any mods i can do to it to make it sound like the blues junior- when i turn it up on the clean channel past four the breakup sound is terrible in combo with my ocd. is there a mod that i can do to make it sound like a blues junior because i love the blues junior sound but its not loud enough for the venues i play
Which of these amps would give the best Blues Tone w/o pedals, just pure amp. Fender Blues Jr, Fender Super Sonic 22 & SS-60 or Peavey Classic 30 & Peavey Delta Blues? Thanks and love the vids. God Bless.
@hawg427 I can get superb tone out of my SS-60 in the Bassman channel and tweaking around the Burn channel with the EQ. Forget the Peaveys. Fender all the way!!! :)
you really should be getting checks from fender or at least be endorsed by them. i bet you have sold so many blues jrs for fender cuz you use them on your videos. i actually bought one after watching this exact same video last year.
awesome amp, awesome playin. what kind of pups are in your strat?? I run tex-mex, yep their cheap, but dam they sound good. to my ears anyway. Keep on rocking. RIP SRV..................
The NOS is a great sounding amp for the $. As mentioned the lower wattage allows for a little more headroom than say the HRD or the Blues deluxe. I use a OCD pedal in front and it for a little more overdrive when needed. BTW fantastic playing.
I just bought this amp(the NOS with the Jensen speaker). I ordered it from MS because the music stores didn't have any in stock since Christmas. I liked the tone of the Hot Rod Deluxe and The Blues Deluxe better, but they are just way to loud for me!
I love the blues junior... but it is quiet!!! I've cranked it up all the way in a music store before and the thing just does not get that loud despite the fantastic warm tone it produces. I'm going for a blues deluxe, also a fantastic feeling amp.
@Burstbuckerr this amp is perfect for recording since to get those nice tube sound you have to crank it (max volume), im not sure how powerfull is the deluxe but 15watts is already lound, 30, 50, 60 watts is just too much, Most likley you will annoy your neighbors, i rather mic this amp on a live enviroment than use a 100watts head.
SRV used Vibroverbs as well. Something like #5 and #6 off the line that he found in different places at different times. Of course his were modded, but they added a lot of the fatness to his tone.
stevies rig was 2 super reverbs cranked (freakin loud), and tube screamer for color, the the blues junior does a decent job, so do the fender deluxe, the other key to stevies sound is to sarurate the power tubes not the preamp tubes, hope that helped
I have played the whole MG line, old and new, all wattages, and never achieved any acceptable tone from any of them, although I will say the new ones were a step forward. To say they can sound like Stevie is a blatant lie though.
I was thinking of getting a marshall MG30FX because its about half the price of a blues junior. Do you guys think i'll be able to get a decent sounding SRV tone with this?
It'd require a bunch of extras, you cant beat the blues jr for the price.... and besides, your never gonna get TRUE SRV tone without a tube amp. hope that helped :)
Wow, that sounds amazing!! I play Les Pauls, but I've been jonzing for a Strat or Tele. Watching this video pushed me over the line. My wife isn't going to be happy!
Have you tried the Texas red blues junior? its a blues junior with a Vintage 30 in it. I bought it and thought it sounded great even though people say the speaker has to be worked abit.
Actually, SRV used either Super or Pro Reverbs cranked and there is a difference in the tube sounds between the Blues Deluxe 6L6s and 6V6. But a good neck PUP and some reverb and 'cleanish' OD can come close.
Of course, Hendrix was a moded Marshall man et al...
wow this video is amazing! I cant believe the tone it sounds so much like SRV!!! I have a quick question, I have an Epiphone Les Paul and a Vox AD30vt amp and I've been trying to find a good blues tone....any suggestions or help??? Thanks so much! Keep on rocking!
I'm using an Epiphone Casino and a Tokai SG. Will this sound good with those guitars and through a mic? Also how does it handle effects? I'm looking to use it as a gigging Amp.
dude: sounds terrific. I changed out the origianl MIM pickups for seymour duncan 1954's. I'm using a fender GDEC amp. I want to weep..I can't get anywhere near that tone. is this just a useless toy? when you say pedals, are they stomp box things? I'm mostly a keyboard player...
great playing man. who knew you could get srv for $530 hah. this vid confirmed my decision and the amp will be mine shortly. i was wondering, where can i find an odr-s, and if i cant, what's a good alternative for it? and also do u have alternatives for the two boss pedals you use? thanks.
The ODR-S was out of production when I started putting my lessons up and now it's officially in a global shortage. However, you can still find them on ebay once in a great while. I just need to find a pedal to recommend that sounds better, and is still in production :)

Hendrix used primarily Marshall Amps (I think) so it might be tough to cop some of his tones, and John Mayer uses Two Rock which in my opinion sound nothing like Fender's, and his tone is a little dark compared to this amp, but you could probably get close.
i don't know if you've heard of ulbrick amps (aussie amps) but if you have can the blues jnr get cleans like that? ohh and if you've heard the epiphone blues custom 30 what do you think in terms of getting hendrix, srv and john mayer tone (i know you pretty much gave me the answer but i'm hopn for a different response)?
I've not heard of them, but I can tell you that the Blues Junior does have some very nice clean tones, but not at loud volumes. At loud volumes it breaks up quite nicely due to the low wattage.
I'm also not very familiar with the Epiphone Amps, although I think they're sold at my local music store, so I should probably check them out.
You know that's a good question. I'm not sure if those bands used Fender or Marshall or even Vox amps. I will say that the tonal response of a Fender is noticeably different than a Marshall or Vox so the best thing to do would probably be to try it out if you have access to one at a guitar store :)

I think any of the Mexican or US strats would be a good upgrade, you'll definitely see better playability and tone. However, be sure to take neck size into account because that will have a big effect on how well you can play the guitar.
Hi I just bought a black one and did the speaker swap to be a tweed. I loved the tone but want to know the specifics on the two EQ pedal settings so I can nail this. Would you mind sharing? Can you get close without the EQ pedals on this amp?
My use of the EQ pedals is basically as an enhanced clean boost. When you boost the signal to the amp, you overdrive it further (assuming it has some distortion already). By playing with the EQ of the clean boost, you can produce a different sounding lead tone. For slow blues like Texas Flood, I use the parametric eq to dial in a sharp boost for that extra "scream". Putting a good distortion pedal in front of the amp will get you a good lead tone, but the EQ pedals give it the extra flavor.
At this point, I was using Texas Specials in this guitar. I have since replaced them with pickups from Nick at RocketFire guitars. He sent me a pair to review, and I loved them.
one question, if I use a parametric eq after a tube screamer, a tube screamer accents the mid range so I would want to cut it with the eq set to 1.5? is that correct??? thanks in advance...
I actually use my parametric EQ before the overdrive pedal. This way when you kick in the EQ pedal, you're also overdriving the distortion pedal as well as the amp a bit more. Other wise, you'll get a big volume boost. As for what frequency to boost, it depends on the guitar/amp combo, but I've found the sweet spot to be around that 1.5KHz range. But this is only for an Albert King / SRV / Texas Flood solo style sound. If the pedal allows it you might have to bump up the low end a bit too.
That sounds more like a statement than a question, but either way, there's a decent part of this demo that includes no pedals, but also a good amount showing what the amp sounds like when pushed a little harder, which I happen to think is important for players who are actually going to use the amp live.
For this demo I was using a Mexican strat that is probably alder or something cheaper. My other guitar is a swamp ash guitar and I much prefer this wood for its clarity and light weight. For fretboards I prefer Brazilian rosewood to standard rosewood because its brighter.
I just bought a blues jr NOS today! I am having so much fun with this thing. This has to be the best amp in it's price range. It can really put out for only 15 watts. It's just all tube goodness.
Thanks, I just want to make sure you are using the NOS series of the JR and also are you using any boosters or pedals at all? Im also guessing high action and around .12's?
Well hopefully I'll be able to fly myself there some day. I met an Aussie named Mike Elrington at SXSW in Austin a few years back. Don't know what he's doing now, but a great guitar player.
I have the option of getting a new Blues Junior, or a second-hand Hot Rod Deluxe or Blues Deluxe for the same price. Which one would you suggest me to buy?
Because it's only 15 watts, you can use the normal gain/master volume knobs to get the right amount of distortion and volume. So it's kind of like the whole thing is a distortion channel. Plus I use a couple pedals to push it even farther.
Won't find any argument from me on that point.I find Jimmie's playing to be a master class in the art of restraint. Something a lot of guitar slingers could learn from.
I tried this Amp w/ the Reissued American Standard Strat today. Oh man, I'm in love...the tone I got out of it was almost identical to Clapton/SRV/Buddy Guy...I loved how the sound breaks up when you start hammering away at the strings.
Have you had a chance to compare the clean sounds between this and one of the Fender RI amps? I'm in the process of saving, and I've narrowed it down to buy one of these ro save for, say, a Deluxe Reverb. Thoughts?
The only other amp I have is a Hot Rod Deluxe. If there's one thing the Blues Jr. lacks it's a little bit of that high end sparkle that some of the other amps have. Not a big deal for me, but it should be noted.
so if you turn the volume up high and keep the master volume relatively low, does the amp start clipping at a relatively lower volume? sorry, i'm still a little confused
Yeah, the only difference between a master volume and an attenuator is that an attenuator comes after the power tubes so it allows you to run the power tubes really hot (high volume) which creates the really smooth overdrive, but then it cuts the signal before it hits the speakers. A master volume allows you to distort the preamp tubes (slightly less quality distortion), but it cuts the signal before it hits the power tubes.
Hey man, awesome playing. I have a Blues Jr. on the way to me right now. I was wondering what kind of strat that is. Aesthetically, it looks just like one I saw in my dreams, and then tried to put together on some online strat builder flash thing. It never looked as nice as yours though. Also, I love how your vids are awesome to the point that there aren't many stupid comments that are so common on youtube these days. Cheers
Thanks for the feedback. That's a older '96 or '97 Mexican strat with a replacement black pickguard. The paint is a translucent off white. Don't know that they made too many guitar with that finish.
I delete any useless negative comments which come along once in a while because they're....well, useless.
Did a gig last week with and one of the guitarists i played along side use's a blues junior, i got a 59 bassman and he kept up with me, of course within limits, with the quality of PA's systems u mic the blues junior and its equal with any other amp... unmicced it couldnt keep up with the bassman but, they are an awsome sounding amp. and practical.
do you think you could get,a "keith richards sound out of that amp. exile on main st stuff. im thinking about buying a blues jr.but im wondering if a pro jr would be better.
I'm not sure about that, but I'm not sure if a Pro Jr. has a master volume, so even if it had less power, you might need to turn it up louder to get the same amount of distortion.
I played them side by side and the tweed version was noticeably brighter and more "lively". For the two models I tried, the price difference was $129, and at least on these two, the tubes AND the speaker was better. Upgrading both would have cost as much as just buying the tweed version.
Thank you so much for taking the time to reply and I am going with the tweed. You are definitely right,I came to the same conclusion recently. Take care Pal.
It only has one volume and tone IIRC but I read his question as the differences between the different models of the Blues JR. They all sound the same and have the same features, even the one that looks like a Dano (pretty limited edition)
your playing is brilliant powerful yet intricut like stevie ray and hendrix

Hi I just bought a black one and did the speaker swap to be a tweed. I loved the tone but want to know the specifics on the two EQ pedal settings so I can nail this. Would you mind sharing? Can you get close without the EQ pedals on this amp?
ultimatexguitar 3 years ago
My use of the EQ pedals is basically as an enhanced clean boost. When you boost the signal to the amp, you overdrive it further (assuming it has some distortion already). By playing with the EQ of the clean boost, you can produce a different sounding lead tone. For slow blues like Texas Flood, I use the parametric eq to dial in a sharp boost for that extra "scream". Putting a good distortion pedal in front of the amp will get you a good lead tone, but the EQ pedals give it the extra flavor.

what pickups are you using ?
texas specials?
wackedoutsports 3 years ago
At this point, I was using Texas Specials in this guitar. I have since replaced them with pickups from Nick at RocketFire guitars. He sent me a pair to review, and I loved them.
gr8bluesgtr 3 years ago
I am thinking and have been awhile about getting this amp. It is in the top running of the 3 in this price range I m looking at.
Sounds great.... NOTHING beats all tube amps.
sgraniknn 3 years ago
and what pedal are you using?
ddarknessrhcp91 3 years ago
Check out the details to the right of the video. I didn't take very good notes because I didn't know so many people would watch this.
gr8bluesgtr 3 years ago
one question, if I use a parametric eq after a tube screamer, a tube screamer accents the mid range so I would want to cut it with the eq set to 1.5? is that correct??? thanks in advance...
bz1bz1 3 years ago
I actually use my parametric EQ before the overdrive pedal. This way when you kick in the EQ pedal, you're also overdriving the distortion pedal as well as the amp a bit more. Other wise, you'll get a big volume boost. As for what frequency to boost, it depends on the guitar/amp combo, but I've found the sweet spot to be around that 1.5KHz range. But this is only for an Albert King / SRV / Texas Flood solo style sound. If the pedal allows it you might have to bump up the low end a bit too.
gr8bluesgtr 3 years ago
Sounds like Stevie to me. :)
stratorarious 3 years ago
why do these amp demos always include pedals that make it impossible to tell what the amp actually sounds like?
postjob62 3 years ago
That sounds more like a statement than a question, but either way, there's a decent part of this demo that includes no pedals, but also a good amount showing what the amp sounds like when pushed a little harder, which I happen to think is important for players who are actually going to use the amp live.
gr8bluesgtr 3 years ago
balls! they didn't continue this amp for 2008 >:( now i gotta wait untill i can get down to vancouver before i can find one.
SmilingKnife2 3 years ago
sounds almost like SRV!!
blueskidd96 3 years ago
almost is as close as I'll ever come :)
gr8bluesgtr 3 years ago
very close indeed in some parts. when you go into that texas flood part, it sounds very close to stevie's el mocambo tone for sure.
timmy47 3 years ago
To get that tone, I'd really need a 15" speaker, but I guess we don't get everything we want in life :)
gr8bluesgtr 3 years ago
true, but it sounded pretty good anyway.
timmy47 3 years ago
i got a question about your strat. alder or ash and why do you like the one over the other?
SmilingKnife2 3 years ago
For this demo I was using a Mexican strat that is probably alder or something cheaper. My other guitar is a swamp ash guitar and I much prefer this wood for its clarity and light weight. For fretboards I prefer Brazilian rosewood to standard rosewood because its brighter.

I just bought a blues jr NOS today! I am having so much fun with this thing. This has to be the best amp in it's price range. It can really put out for only 15 watts. It's just all tube goodness.
freeagentxms 3 years ago
hey, im between buying a blues deluxe or a blues jr NOS, can u tell what are the main differences respecting tone?
danyjcms 3 years ago
Blues Junior will give you better, more overdriven tone at lower volumes. There is also more available preamp distortion from a Blues Junior.
gr8bluesgtr 3 years ago
Thanks, I just want to make sure you are using the NOS series of the JR and also are you using any boosters or pedals at all? Im also guessing high action and around .12's?
danyjcms 3 years ago
You are so sharing & kind to do the things you do....taking the time to develop Stevie Snacks etc. Your a Quality person, Good onya!
I wish I was wealthy cause I'd fly you to OZ so you could perform all those great SRV songs for an appreciative Outback Ozzy crowd!
OutbackBros 3 years ago
Well hopefully I'll be able to fly myself there some day. I met an Aussie named Mike Elrington at SXSW in Austin a few years back. Don't know what he's doing now, but a great guitar player.
BTW, your steakhouses here are great....hehe
gr8bluesgtr 3 years ago
I have the option of getting a new Blues Junior, or a second-hand Hot Rod Deluxe or Blues Deluxe for the same price. Which one would you suggest me to buy?
rasomaso 3 years ago
I have a Hot Rod Deluxe, and I really prefer my Blues Deluxe because I can get much better tone at lower volumes.
gr8bluesgtr 3 years ago
The second one u did was sooo Albert King
was it?
johnzhos123 3 years ago
Albert King pioneered that sound, Stevie Ray Vaughan picked it up from him, and that's where I learned it.
gr8bluesgtr 3 years ago
Nice demo, dude!
I guess that Jenson
makes the difference.
Fender must know that
and that's why the
cost is higher.

Question, If there iS no Distortion channel how do you get that tone you have?
Stefanrocks 3 years ago
Because it's only 15 watts, you can use the normal gain/master volume knobs to get the right amount of distortion and volume. So it's kind of like the whole thing is a distortion channel. Plus I use a couple pedals to push it even farther.
gr8bluesgtr 3 years ago
Basically, you just slam the power tubes. Crank the volume all the way up, then toss an overdrive in front to boost it even further.
Great tone Steve!
VHOBSESSED78 3 years ago
sounds near identacle to me

tone tone tone !! I love SRV ! I had a reissue ts 808 and the blues deluxe.. wasnt bad at all.

I used to own a blues deluxe as well but man was that thing loud.....

Nice guy, sweet guitar, badass amp... good vid. :)

Great videos man! Not a hughe SRV fan, more Jimmie, but you got it! :) Keep posting.
astamnes 3 years ago
Won't find any argument from me on that point.I find Jimmie's playing to be a master class in the art of restraint. Something a lot of guitar slingers could learn from.
gr8bluesgtr 3 years ago
Cool man! That little amp sounds great!
capoman1 3 years ago
Sweet man, just bought a Morril Modded Blues Junior myself killer amp!! Is that a Strat Deluxe Plus your playing?
Gtrmaestro 3 years ago
That's a bastardized mexican strat with almost none of the original hardware :) Texas Special Pickups.
gr8bluesgtr 3 years ago
i'm waiting for mine to arrive--can't wait!
what kind of pickups you using, mang? those texas specials?
peace

For this video, they were texas special pickups
gr8bluesgtr 3 years ago
very nice sound.are you using any pedal ?
danbohane 3 years ago
Check the description to the right of the video. I also post more about the pedals I use over at StevieSnacks (dot) com
gr8bluesgtr 3 years ago
I tried this Amp w/ the Reissued American Standard Strat today. Oh man, I'm in love...the tone I got out of it was almost identical to Clapton/SRV/Buddy Guy...I loved how the sound breaks up when you start hammering away at the strings.
TrueMusou 3 years ago
Have you had a chance to compare the clean sounds between this and one of the Fender RI amps? I'm in the process of saving, and I've narrowed it down to buy one of these ro save for, say, a Deluxe Reverb. Thoughts?
Great playing btw
dmoneyden834 3 years ago
The only other amp I have is a Hot Rod Deluxe. If there's one thing the Blues Jr. lacks it's a little bit of that high end sparkle that some of the other amps have. Not a big deal for me, but it should be noted.
gr8bluesgtr 3 years ago
does the master volume act just like a power attenuator?
wheeler004 3 years ago
No, an attenuator cuts the volume between the power tubes and the speaker. The master volume on this amp cuts the volume before the power tubes.
gr8bluesgtr 3 years ago
so if you turn the volume up high and keep the master volume relatively low, does the amp start clipping at a relatively lower volume? sorry, i'm still a little confused
wheeler004 3 years ago
Yeah, the only difference between a master volume and an attenuator is that an attenuator comes after the power tubes so it allows you to run the power tubes really hot (high volume) which creates the really smooth overdrive, but then it cuts the signal before it hits the speakers. A master volume allows you to distort the preamp tubes (slightly less quality distortion), but it cuts the signal before it hits the power tubes.
gr8bluesgtr 3 years ago
Hey man, awesome playing. I have a Blues Jr. on the way to me right now. I was wondering what kind of strat that is. Aesthetically, it looks just like one I saw in my dreams, and then tried to put together on some online strat builder flash thing. It never looked as nice as yours though. Also, I love how your vids are awesome to the point that there aren't many stupid comments that are so common on youtube these days. Cheers
kungfuruckus 3 years ago
Thanks for the feedback. That's a older '96 or '97 Mexican strat with a replacement black pickguard. The paint is a translucent off white. Don't know that they made too many guitar with that finish.
I delete any useless negative comments which come along once in a while because they're....well, useless.
gr8bluesgtr 3 years ago
how loud does this amp get. do you think it is as loud as a fender 25 watt solid state?
Roos15 4 years ago
It'll be MUCH louder. It's more than enough to gig with.
T3hVid30Cr1tic 4 years ago
I own one.. do you think it's enough loud for stage playing? I was about to change it for a fender blues reissue..
stratocasterfranck 3 years ago
I've gigged with mine several times. I haven't had it up past 3.5 on stage OR in rehearsal
Theonlymoog 3 years ago
Did a gig last week with and one of the guitarists i played along side use's a blues junior, i got a 59 bassman and he kept up with me, of course within limits, with the quality of PA's systems u mic the blues junior and its equal with any other amp... unmicced it couldnt keep up with the bassman but, they are an awsome sounding amp. and practical.
Locolacho 3 years ago
Man, you absolutely NAILED Stevie's tone.
Kudos!
You also convinced me to buy a Blues Junior!
Also, are there any differences between the blonde junior, tweed junior, etc?
Thanks, bro! You rule!

Aesthetics, only.

Thanks, dude.
T3hVid30Cr1tic 3 years ago
thanks. great demo also
Roos15 4 years ago
do you think you could get,a "keith richards sound out of that amp. exile on main st stuff. im thinking about buying a blues jr.but im wondering if a pro jr would be better.
Roos15 4 years ago
I'm not sure about that, but I'm not sure if a Pro Jr. has a master volume, so even if it had less power, you might need to turn it up louder to get the same amount of distortion.
gr8bluesgtr 4 years ago
Great playing,I was wondering if you think there is a 200 dollar difference in the sound of the tweed( jenson) versus the standard one. Thanks bro.
bandovelor 3 years ago
I played them side by side and the tweed version was noticeably brighter and more "lively". For the two models I tried, the price difference was $129, and at least on these two, the tubes AND the speaker was better. Upgrading both would have cost as much as just buying the tweed version.
gr8bluesgtr 3 years ago
Thank you so much for taking the time to reply and I am going with the tweed. You are definitely right,I came to the same conclusion recently. Take care Pal.
bandovelor 3 years ago
It only has one volume and tone IIRC but I read his question as the differences between the different models of the Blues JR. They all sound the same and have the same features, even the one that looks like a Dano (pretty limited edition)
