Were those special dancing shoes? Those seem to help the dancer slide and spin better, and certainly work for the jazz move of going up on the toes. Ordinary black loafers just don't seem to work with the spin, you're much more likely to fall out of the spin that way, I know, I've done it. Times have certainly changed with the crotch grabbing though. It used to be taboo, now, it's a trademark.
