Hollywood initially did not have First Amendment protection and the studios owned most of the cinemas and were fearful of bad publicity and censorship. So from the like the 1930s - late 1960s their was the Hollywood Production Code which prohibited many things and one of the big rules was no gay characters, no gay rights and no even references to homosexuality

Considering that this movie was released in 1960, the censorship department thought that two men in a bathing scene wearing next to nothing was too much for audiences to take and at the time it probably was. Hence why it was cut from the film

I've heard about the Celluloid Closet. On this show called 50 documentaries to see before you die and essentially it was saying how Hollywood tends to subliminally condemn homosexuality. If the undertones are there, they must be deleted.
