I was going to launch into a whole Windows noob assault on your vid but you're using a kewl window manager. Good on you. Is it Blackbox? gkrellm2 is a good app. (or is this NOT your vid?)
blackbox is the light weight windows management, used for live cd's, now commonly used for usb distro's. 90% of *NIX distro's run on computers that can use Gnome, KDE, and xfce4, not to mention the other ones ha.
I used to use Blackbox when I was running OpenBSD on my laptop many years ago but now I mostly use Window Maker under Solaris. Can't stand Gnome/Java Desktop Environment, KDE or any of those others that look too much like windows. Not because I hate windows (I quite like it) but I wnat to use something different when I use UNIX. I also like CDE but that's being phased out.
yeah i know what you mean lol. kde looks soo much like windows now...i can not even use it. and gnome is turning into a more...wide ranged look as well. but eh...i use them because it looks better lol. like i use xfce the most..not sure why lol
I used to love KDE but it just doesnt feel right anymore and gnome is getting too bloated. havent tried xfce yet but it looks promising...especially cause everyone seems to be migrating to it now lol
uh...the only difference in each one is the look- mind you im not talking about the customizing friendly of each, as well as the compiz effects on each one.
kde is exactly like windows. gnome is the basic WM for linux, and xfce is just light weight. other than those minor differences, the main difference that everyone hates is that they look plain at times. i say, learn some graphics editing and programming, and edit it yourself. enough said lol
Well, that depends. It used to be the apps you ran were dependant on the gui your were using but now you can run anything in everything (perfect example is me running amarok in gnome), and as an update, I did install XFCE in ubuntu... i didnt much like it but it is extremely lightweight compared to the others... So far gnome has treated me well and is as functional as all the rest so im sticking with it. why fix what aint broken?
its still just the look and the level in programming each one. xfce is written in java, a minor idiot can learn how to edit that, hence why it got so popular, because it was the easiest to edit. as for what you said, you could generally use any program you want in any desktop environment. its just a visual interface, it doesn't limit the programs you use. the concept of 'light weight' means it uses less cpu power. its identical to gnome, except the right click is different.
the major difference in any of these would be the programming used. however, like i said- kde is a transition env, it was created so people can easily get used to linux without having to struggle. applications installed with it helped this as well. all in all- the major difference is editing and looks. Oh, and obviously some take more cpu power than others. That shouldn't matter much in this day and age though with quad core 3ghz lmao!
Denial of Service, is basically is a mass overflow, except that exploit he used caused a normal overflow, that wouldn't get through, to work. webservers have come with software to stop DoS attacks, however its the scripts used on the *nix servers that allow the exploits to work.
Errm that is not a hack... It's just a DOS attack. And it can be stopped if you have dual band or can switch IPs fast. I really don't like this thing since a lot of people tried DOS attacks on me. Barely 2 had enough speed though.
DoS attack; it lies in loads of exploits in scripts or programs, normally websites are vulnerable..such as forums of older versions or newer-coming out versions of scripts. some programs on a server may be exploited for this as well. its an overflow which creates the server to shutdown. it is a hack, but it is not getting root, basically. it can be stopped, like you said, but you don't know how. it's stopped by fixing the hole that loops data.
i agree. Linux is a great stepping stone to learning. security is far beyond windows, which is the easiest to get around..hence why most virus's are written commonly on windows to steal information. however, *NIX should be one to talk, seeing as how a simple line of code that could be tampered with, could cause the entire server to crash, show the password file, or even gain access to root...lol

Good demonstration of a DoS, and you aren't taking credit for writing the exploit script like a n00b script kiddie.
Also, nmap FTW. Best service scanner; of course, native to the best kernel around, Linux.
