Thanks a lot for this upload! I am a big fan of the F4U-1 Corsair and I can say that you've done justice to the plane. May I ask that you buid a 1-A variant as well? Preferably the Lulubelle of Pappy Boyington. Thanks!
Paying a little trip down memory lane here! Can't wait to get stuck in about my 1/48 Tamiya Birdcage Corsair, especially after watching this little beauty come together! Hopefully (and I'm sure it will) the Tamiya will go together as well as it's island cousin here, although, typically I have a ton of aftermarket to go into it!
@Ezza190 Dimensionally it isprobably very accurate.. but ..no.. I ..will.. not.. buy.. one.. ever.. again.. :0 There's loads of etched brass and stuff you can buy to make it better, but by the time you have spent £9 on the kit, another £4 on the etched brass (or more), you still won't end up with a model looking anywhere near as good as the Revell P-47 D for £4.99.. :P
@BasicModelling well, it is still dancing about, i was lucky to get it really, its a rare model in my view (Airfix), but apparently they have released the ''Razorback'' version, but i built the bubble top version, which turned out perfect, if you ever see one, grab it! you may not get another chance (maybe) :)
@Ezza190 Didn't know they had released a Bubble version.. :) I have heard the Razorback isn't very good, but I was thinking of buying one for the decals, as I'd like to build a formation aircraft.. :) I could use the decals on one of my Academy Razors.. :)
@BasicModelling Well, the kit i had, the Fuselage was blue, maybe it was a conversion kit im not sure, and i think that would be a splendid idea, i use some decals from other kits, but when it comes to ''Brown Backed'' Decals, then i wont use them, why are they bad quality? the brown backed versions :|
@Ezza190 I don't know why the brown backed decals are so bad, I guess Airfix swapped the printer / maker of the decals, and ended up even worse.. Luckily they don't seem to use that manufacturer anymore.. the old style Airfix decals are still the best ones, even if they seldom are in register.. :)
@BasicModelling At least they dont do them now, even when you varnish the decals in place, those type still come off, still, im close to finishing my own Corsair at the moment, just need to put the decals on her, its the Airfix Corsair FAA, it will be a good result :)
@Ezza190 If you buy the new red boxes you'll be fine.. but anything before that can still contain the bad decals.. :P I tend to use a lot of after market decals anyway, which is a way to get round the problem.. :) Looking forward to the FAA Corsair, I want one for my collection too.. :)
@BasicModelling I have to tell you about the decal instructions, they make no sense whatsoever, some of the decals it tells you dont even exist on the sheet, so i opted to the old guessing and knowledge, but it turned out alright once i varnished it :)
Nice, I have a feeling that I might of watched this video before but if not, very nice kit by the looks of it :) Where did you get the brilliant video clip from at the start? I like the look of that Korean Corsair :) Have the painting instructions in the manual faded to a nice light blue? What was the filler filling at 2:47? I've just seen my comment above from 3 weeks go!
@Spitfire44679 I can't remember where I took the clip from now.. some website or other, I had the details on my old computer, now sadly demised.. As for the painting instructons looking blue, that is the way Hasegawa has made it look.. :) The filler is 'Squadron White Putty', it's my preferred filler of choice.. :) I hope I replied to your other comment, as I never willfully ignore a comment made, but sometimes simply forget to reply.. :)
Very, very nice model; I think it's my favourite of yours that I've seen so far!
I've heard very good things about Hasegawa. Being one of the group of three manufacturers (the others being Tamiya and Aoshima ) that make up the 'Shizuoka Plastic Model Manufacturer's Association', that's hardly surprising!
@bruce3371 Yes, Hasegawa has some great models, as have indeedTamiya.. never heard of Aoshima though! But even great modelmakers such as H and T get things wrong sometimes.. Still, in this case they didn't, this is a very nice kit.. :)
Wasn't the Wong shape also so that the aircraft was higher off the ground to they could use a bigger propeller? Someone told me that but I am not sure weather it is correct. Nice model anyway, you did a good job with those decals and the end result looks superb. The background in the last shots is very nice... Did u paint it yourself?? Good job :)
@2002And Yes, I guess you're right.. re. the prop! They had hydraulic landing gear legs on the P-47 for the same reason.. :) Glad you liked the backdrop, I wish I could paint like that, buit it is a printed off photography... :) :)
@PlasticScaleModeller Halfway through Academy one, "Big Hog", tricoulour camo, navy blue, mid blue and white, im using: Humbrol 15 (Midnight Blue), Humbrol 157 (Azure Blue) and a White spray paint. Main body constructed, now landing gear and other small parts to complete! xD
@888HamilkarBarkas888 Yes, I like the wingshape.. designed to keep the propeller off the ground, without having to make the landing gar too tall, as well as to save a bit of space onboard crowded carriers.. even if most Corsairs saw action from landbased airfields, as it happens.. :)
The real reason the the odd bent wing configuration was to make ground clearance for the exceptionally large prop needed to absorb the power of the Pratt & Whitney XR-2000 18 cylinder Double Wasp engine. That engine put out a huge amount of power and torque and needed a very large prop. It also allowed for much shorter landing gear struts which made for better stability in carrier landings.
@GeorgeMalcolm60 Did I claim anything else, then?? :) The engine was also used by the P-47 which had a hydraulic landing gear for the same reason, I believe.. to aid ground clearance.. :) Obvisously not as practical on a carrier born aircraft, even if the Corsair saw more landbased action than onboard ships. It's a little known fact that the P-47 also saw carrier duty..:) Either way, thank you for your valid input and clarification, in case I said something different in the video.. :)
@BasicModelling Uh, you did say something else. I was about to do a know-it-all number on the subject and found Mr. Malcom here straightening things out. Your text claims the gull wing was a space-saving measure on carriers, which, you know, doesn't make sense. 8-)
@Ezza190 Nope, I haven't built a RN Corsair.. so it must have been somebody else.. The only Corsairs I've ever built apart from this one was the Revell kit.. and that was built as a Korean war version.. :)
@Ezza190 I like the Corsair, and may do the Airfix kit, if I like the decal options offered.. :) I'd like to make a British Corsair, as I already have a US version.. :)
Thank you for your very quick reply. I wasn't planning to use the kit decals. It's going to be the one operated by Stephen Grey's Fighter Collection when it wore Kempford's markings. I'm doing a PM Sea Fury T20 at the moment, as WG655. The yellow bands are giving me a headache though.
@I85PIES That I can imagine.. I'm painting an allover yellow Saab Safir at the moment, which I hope will turn out ok, in spite of yellow being a very difficult colour to handbrush.. ;) Will have to google 'your' SeaFury and see if I can pics of it on the net.. :)
@BasicModelling Aha.. THAT SeaFury.. I would probably use decal stripes for the yellow stripes, personally.. I hope you manage to get them done without too much trouble.. :)
Good luck with the Saab Safir. I did the all yellow Meteor NF14, from the old Matchbox kit, not only did I have to try 3 tins of paint before I found the right shade, it needed six coats before I was happy with it. Really, it should have taught me to keep away from aeroplanes with yellow on them!
@I85PIES The Safir has painted up quite well, but I discovered some flaws in the assembly this morning, so had to add some filler last minute, which no doubt will throw a spanner in the works.. :P And the canopy isn't painting up as well as the plane itself, but I guess that was only to be expected.. I normally spraypaint yellow, but my can wasn't the right shade.. :)
The music ios from IncompetechDOTcom, can't think of the title right now.. As for a Revell kit, if you do 1/72 scale I strongly recommend the P-47 D Thunderbolt.. :) If you do 1/48 I don't really know.. :)
i didnt get the corshair yesterday i got the revell 1/48 spit mk II i wasnt able to get all the correct paints i used light blue instead of sky blue though it is turning out good. the size is is like a 1/72 scale modell.
Some of the early Spitires were painted in 'eggshell', which is like a light blue, so that should be ok, I guess.. 1/48 Spits are no larger than a medium sized 1/72 scale model.. :) Right now I'm working on a 1/48 scale Spitfire Lf.VIII in a desert camo... :)
My first video of 2010 will be of the Spitfire VIII.. Not sure how special it will be, but it will show the build at least! I also have the Beaufighter in the pipeline.. :)
Slowly.. I may get the Beaufighter done before the Spitfire at this rate.. but I am busy doing other things too.. so I'll post them when I'm ready.. :)
Tells you enough about the jury, huh...?! ;-) Browsing the net, looking at winning models, I often doubt if the jury even knows what the original looks like. Another bad development in scale modeling is heavy weathering and pre- and post shading. Turns beautiful models into old, dirty junk which look like they were just picked up from the junk yard. Weathered and dirty cockpits? They hardly get the chance to get that way. I always look up pictures of the real thing before I start modeling.
You're a man to my taste.. I prefer planes that look new! But the fact is that (and specifically in the pacific) they got weathered very quickly.. :) Dirty cockpits are a possibility, some planes flew for a very long time.. :)
All I can say is that a couple of years ago in one of my clubs monthly competitions, two members had built exactly the same model of a Corsair in 1/48 scale.. one was matt and one was shiny.. the matt one won the competition, the shiny one didn't even come close! I know these days most real warbirds are painted in a gloss coat, mainly for durability.. as repainting is expensive, but during WWII matt coats were the norm, generally!
no glue for the canopy!? that's never happened to me b4.The model is great.A little bit of weathering and abuse would have made this plane killer! But that's just what I like.A+
Yes, I guess a little weathering would make it even better.. but for now I'm quite happy with it as such!! :) I will build a few more Corsairs, just to compare the kits.. but at the moment I haven't got any other Corsair kits.. :)
Nah, this is my most viewed, on this channel.. Had I kept KurtGnu no doubt my Apache video would have been near a million views by now.. but hey, I'm happy with 4k and counting.. :)
Yes, well.. Your match rocket is a classic.. I wonder what your 'disco communist' whatzit would have been up in now, had you kept it up.. still miss that video!! :) When I checked the 'insight' for the Apache video and realised that most people stopped watching it after about 10 seconds, I realised that a lot of views really means very little.. :) People tend to watch THIS video more or less the whole way through, which means I've kept their interest.. :)
I had no idea it could do that, i will further investigate. I had to get rid of disco communism for copyright reasons, but looking back I feel a better job could have been made and so I'm pleased with this action, perhaps in the future i will find some suitable PD clips.
Mine fitted so tight I didn't need to glue it at all.. It is a very tight fit!! I guess you'll have to try very carefully, and also make sure you have it lined up the right way.. :)
Very cool, but one note. The Gull Wing was designed to allow shorter landing gear and still allow the huge prop to clear the ground. The folding wing was for space on carriers.
It was the British who developed a technique for landing it on carriers. Until then, it was a strictly land-based fighter.
Not that I noticed. In any case, this was a very well-done video, showing exactly the things most would like to know about building this model. From the final pictures, it was also an excellent job of building. Very detailed and smooth. I was never that skilled.
:-) Thank you.. I try to be as correct as possible when it comes to any info in my videos, but am grateful for any mistakes pointed out.. especially now as they can be amended by a quick annotation! The decals didn't go on as well as I had hoped on this kit, but apart from that I'm pleased with it.. Out of the Corsairs I've built, I enjoyed this one the most!! :)
Most 'early' kits do.. and this is a fairly early Hasegawa... :) You get a pilot figure to cover up the fact that the cock-pit have very little detail.. :)
I'd read on the armorama website that a good way to simulate wear is to base coat the model silver, then spray it over with hair spray (of all things) then the top coat. Afterwards take some fine steel wool and buff the spots you want worn down. Saw pics of that technique used on models with worn off winter camoflage. :)
Should I undercoat the whole plane wih silver and then blue just to reveal some wear afterwards with sandpaper or should I make it like you did? Good work though. Mine is Italieri's.
That is up to you.. but I'd try the silver undercoat.. a technique I'm going to pratice myself soon, to try it out.. :) The Italeri kit is good, looking forward to seeing it built.. :)
God Bless Colonel Gregory "Pappy" Boyington USMC, (December 4, 1912 - January 11, 1988) was an American fighter ace. Boyington flew initially with the American Volunteer Group ("The Flying Tigers") in the Republic of China Air Force during the Second Sino-Japanese War.
He later commanded the famous U.S. Marine Corps squadron, VMF-214 ("The Black Sheep Squadron") during World War II. Boyington became a prisoner of war later in the war. For his U.S. Marine Corps service he was awarded the Navy Cross and the Medal of Honor.
God bless ALL.. I haven't really looked into the Pacific War as such, or as much as I have the European Theatre of Operations, for obvious reasons.. but I hope to build a collection of US and Japanese figher and possibly bomber planes in due course.. :)
I guess it must be boring if I comment every vid of yours with: Good job, nicely done, great model, perfect work on the model.. so this time I leave that...^^
The idea of the inverted wing was to keep the undercarriage legs short and enable sufficient space for a large prop. The USNavy did not use the Corsair for shipboard service because of the bad forward view and a tendency to swing (schlingern), cured with the later versions.
Yes, I know it was to keep the undercarriage short, even though to me it looks no shorter than on any other aircraft! But it was also to save space, in combination with the wingfold, as a gullwing allowed for a larger wing area / greater lift without it protruding more than neccesary! :) The British were obviously less cautious than the US, as they used carrierbased Corsairs well before the US Navy.. :)
That I understood! As for a bomber version of the Spitfire, I guess I could get one done at some point, I have two Revell kits in 1/48 scale that would be suitable! Except for the fact that when I build the first one, it will be a Mk.IX from the Egyptian Air Force, pitted against a Mk.IX of the Israeli Air Force.. the only war that saw Spit vs. Spit, hense my interest in the matter! :)
I thought it would be selfish of me not to make a first comment solely about my own modelling situation ;P
As it stand I just realised after weighting a hole weak for something in the post, that I gnever click 'order' in the first place. Alas the hot foam cutter may arrive monday, then exciting natters/ la-5 cowling etc shall commence!
Well, if Sir had watched the WHOLE video (ahem) you would have seen the price!! But to save you the pain of suffering through it again, I paid £6.50 for it! You can get a Revell kit for less than that, which is also very good, AND gives you a night fighter radar-pod to boot, but the decals are for two KOREAN-war versions only.. and I wanted a WWII plane.. :)
I've never tried it, haven't even seen the kit, but judging by the Box Art it's another KOREAN version, similar to the Revell kit.. I hope to get my hands on some decals for the Night Fighter version used very successfully in Korea, Hannants have some in stock, but it will have to wait a while.. :) Maybe TOZO can get me some, he offers the same service as SBX now, but a bit slower! :)
The difference is that HE / Tozo remembers to order the stuff you ask for, whereas SBX doesn't always, which is frustrating.. to say the least! I guess SBX will suffer less orders from me in the future, as you'd think he up his service a bit now he has a bit of 'local' competition, but he clearly hasn't bothered to shape up.. :) ...whereas TOZO rolls out the red carpet for me these days! And to me, personal service counts for a lot, I'm old fashioned that way!! Ha! :) :)
What does TOZO stand for? At the moment I'm very pleased with modelsforsale - they have such a big range (including some fancy if expensive italian fighters G.55, Re2000 etc - that I didn't know existed in 1/72). Also some Jap fighters...
I believe it stands for TOy ZOne.. or possibly 'Tosser'.. :) Beware the Reggiane Re2000, there's a kit on the market that's downright AWFUL, I know because I bought one with the intention of building a RSwAF J20, as flown by the F10 Fighter Wing during WWII.. it's now binned with no regret, but I've kept the decals, in the vain hope that a better kit one day will be available on the market.. (I've just seen a Special Hobby kit at Hannats, but I don't think it's the right version, sadly..) :P
That should hopefully be ok then, I have not seen that kit other than a picture of the box art on the H website.. :) Having checked it on the web, it seems a bit better than the legato kit, but the canopy is still vac-form, which was the main reason why I binned the legato kit in the first place.. Vac-form is NOT easy to get accurate, I've never succeeded! But then again, that could be me not having a fine enough pair of scissors.. :(
I can understan that a vac-form kit must be very difficult, I doubt I'll ever even try one.. It's bad enough just trying to cut out a vac-form canopy, so I do not blame you.. :)
I think the art is in leaving a small area outside the edge of the canopy and carefully sanding it off, instead of cutting all the way up to 'the danger line' ;)
Yes, I know that now.. but I rather pass, even if it means that some of those planes I'd love to have in the collection, like a Swedish S31 Spitfire (Mk. XIX to you) never is likely to be built my me! I had a kit, but yet again botched the canopy.. I hope one day somebody will have the GOOD SENSE to make one with all parts injected! In the meantime I have the decals waiting.. As for the Re 2000, it wasn't just the canopy that was bad with the legato kit.. virtually the whole kit was useless..
The comments and replies are stacked in a bit of a funny order.. I take it we're talking Corsair and not Reggiane?? :) It may well offer a WWII option, Italeri normally have decals for quite a few versions with their kits.. :)
I have seen quite a few Spi Fires etc, but I cannot remember that I have seen one of a bomber, yet they have done great work. The Dam Busters were superb aircraft.
Yes, Dam Busters were common over there, I have been told.. :) No, I know what he means, it's just nice when people stick to the topic of the video.. :) :)
Thanks a lot for this upload! I am a big fan of the F4U-1 Corsair and I can say that you've done justice to the plane. May I ask that you buid a 1-A variant as well? Preferably the Lulubelle of Pappy Boyington. Thanks!

@BasicModelling
I85PIES 1 year ago
@I85PIES The Safir has painted up quite well, but I discovered some flaws in the assembly this morning, so had to add some filler last minute, which no doubt will throw a spanner in the works.. :P And the canopy isn't painting up as well as the plane itself, but I guess that was only to be expected.. I normally spraypaint yellow, but my can wasn't the right shade.. :)

damn that's an awesome plain, i'm going to buy a revell aircraft but i don't know yet which one.
Good music, what is it?
pitn24 2 years ago
The music ios from IncompetechDOTcom, can't think of the title right now.. As for a Revell kit, if you do 1/72 scale I strongly recommend the P-47 D Thunderbolt.. :) If you do 1/48 I don't really know.. :)
BasicModelling 2 years ago
for my f4u1d there is no cockpit detail just a haed of a pilot. the spruces r like a tree so i guess the kit is old
kf103 2 years ago
Sounds like an old Airfix kit to me.. :)
BasicModelling 2 years ago
yep im getting it again 2 day because my old 1 didn't incluse the left landing gear
kf103 2 years ago
Ouch.. You should have written to or e-mailed Airfix for a spare part.. they're normally good with replacements.. :)
BasicModelling 2 years ago
i didnt get the corshair yesterday i got the revell 1/48 spit mk II i wasnt able to get all the correct paints i used light blue instead of sky blue though it is turning out good. the size is is like a 1/72 scale modell.
kf103 2 years ago
Some of the early Spitires were painted in 'eggshell', which is like a light blue, so that should be ok, I guess.. 1/48 Spits are no larger than a medium sized 1/72 scale model.. :) Right now I'm working on a 1/48 scale Spitfire Lf.VIII in a desert camo... :)
BasicModelling 2 years ago
ok thanks, btw cant wait 4 ur 1st 2010 vid c if u can make it a spcecial video
kf103 2 years ago
My first video of 2010 will be of the Spitfire VIII.. Not sure how special it will be, but it will show the build at least! I also have the Beaufighter in the pipeline.. :)
BasicModelling 2 years ago
alright cant wait btw how r the how 2 vids comin
kf103 2 years ago
Slowly.. I may get the Beaufighter done before the Spitfire at this rate.. but I am busy doing other things too.. so I'll post them when I'm ready.. :)
BasicModelling 2 years ago
Tells you enough about the jury, huh...?! ;-) Browsing the net, looking at winning models, I often doubt if the jury even knows what the original looks like. Another bad development in scale modeling is heavy weathering and pre- and post shading. Turns beautiful models into old, dirty junk which look like they were just picked up from the junk yard. Weathered and dirty cockpits? They hardly get the chance to get that way. I always look up pictures of the real thing before I start modeling.
telescopereplicator 2 years ago
You're a man to my taste.. I prefer planes that look new! But the fact is that (and specifically in the pacific) they got weathered very quickly.. :) Dirty cockpits are a possibility, some planes flew for a very long time.. :)
BasicModelling 2 years ago
Nice model. A petty, though, you did not give it a very shiny finish, like the real aircraft. It's not too late. You can still give it a gloss coat.
telescopereplicator 2 years ago
All I can say is that a couple of years ago in one of my clubs monthly competitions, two members had built exactly the same model of a Corsair in 1/48 scale.. one was matt and one was shiny.. the matt one won the competition, the shiny one didn't even come close! I know these days most real warbirds are painted in a gloss coat, mainly for durability.. as repainting is expensive, but during WWII matt coats were the norm, generally!
BasicModelling 2 years ago
I should have weathered and chipped it more though, it looks too new.. :) :)
BasicModelling 2 years ago
i like the tamiya one too they are great fits i have one myself
thelegodude9492 2 years ago
Only problem with Tamiya (and Hasegawa) is that they tend to be very expensive, but I guess you pay for the quality... :)
BasicModelling 2 years ago
Hello.I want to say , that your modells are very good maked. And i enjoy watching your videos! :)
glavatatibg 2 years ago
Thank you VERY much... :)
BasicModelling 2 years ago
no glue for the canopy!? that's never happened to me b4.The model is great.A little bit of weathering and abuse would have made this plane killer! But that's just what I like.A+
willsworthy 2 years ago
Yes, I guess a little weathering would make it even better.. but for now I'm quite happy with it as such!! :) I will build a few more Corsairs, just to compare the kits.. but at the moment I haven't got any other Corsair kits.. :)
BasicModelling 2 years ago
4,200 views isn't that much, surely you have vids with more, rihgt?
GerbilEssences 2 years ago
Nah, this is my most viewed, on this channel.. Had I kept KurtGnu no doubt my Apache video would have been near a million views by now.. but hey, I'm happy with 4k and counting.. :)
BasicModelling 2 years ago
I see. I'm actually scared by the amount of views on 'match rocket mrls', it was crap after all ;)
I cannot boast your loyal legion of fans, or fyrasdottirs or whatever they are called now ;)
GerbilEssences 2 years ago
BasicModelling 2 years ago
I had no idea it could do that, i will further investigate. I had to get rid of disco communism for copyright reasons, but looking back I feel a better job could have been made and so I'm pleased with this action, perhaps in the future i will find some suitable PD clips.
Thanks as always.
GerbilEssences 2 years ago
the reason for the wings being like that was to compensate for the 13 foot prop
itsjustlewis 2 years ago
Yes, it's a clever design.. :)

Wow just look at all the views on this!
You did a great job making this video
:-)

i really have a problem with the cowl it wont fit =(
thooo34 2 years ago
Mine fitted so tight I didn't need to glue it at all.. It is a very tight fit!! I guess you'll have to try very carefully, and also make sure you have it lined up the right way.. :)
BasicModelling 2 years ago
I had 1 of them when i was 7 years old and i started making it
glavatatibg 2 years ago
.and when did you finish it?? :)
BasicModelling 2 years ago
Of course. :)
glavatatibg 2 years ago
Very cool, but one note. The Gull Wing was designed to allow shorter landing gear and still allow the huge prop to clear the ground. The folding wing was for space on carriers.
It was the British who developed a technique for landing it on carriers. Until then, it was a strictly land-based fighter.
Fait2 2 years ago
Yes, I know all that.. did I state anything else in the video?? :)
BasicModelling 2 years ago
Not that I noticed. In any case, this was a very well-done video, showing exactly the things most would like to know about building this model. From the final pictures, it was also an excellent job of building. Very detailed and smooth. I was never that skilled.
Fait2 2 years ago
:-) Thank you.. I try to be as correct as possible when it comes to any info in my videos, but am grateful for any mistakes pointed out.. especially now as they can be amended by a quick annotation! The decals didn't go on as well as I had hoped on this kit, but apart from that I'm pleased with it.. Out of the Corsairs I've built, I enjoyed this one the most!! :)
BasicModelling 2 years ago
cool model. I had no idea that they came with figures!
11spikeman 2 years ago
Most 'early' kits do.. and this is a fairly early Hasegawa... :) You get a pilot figure to cover up the fact that the cock-pit have very little detail.. :)
BasicModelling 2 years ago
I built this Revell F4U-5 with more than 250 pieces (1:48)
terminator363 2 years ago
I don't build much in 1/48, but I do have a P-51 Mustang, a T6 Texan, a P-47 and a Shooting Star to make in nthat scale.. in due time!! :)
BasicModelling 2 years ago
are they doing spins on a real F4u corsair ! ... plz dont smash it.
astupiddvdcase 3 years ago
Ha ha ha .. :) I think they're going very careful with it,.. :)
BasicModelling 3 years ago
Nice!
An easy kit but with a wonderfull effect!
xD
Wikingersohn93 3 years ago
Thank you.. The kit is very good, I particularly like the way the wings slot into the fuselage! But the decals leave a lot to be desired.. :)
BasicModelling 3 years ago
I'd read on the armorama website that a good way to simulate wear is to base coat the model silver, then spray it over with hair spray (of all things) then the top coat. Afterwards take some fine steel wool and buff the spots you want worn down. Saw pics of that technique used on models with worn off winter camoflage. :)
justplainerica 3 years ago
I may justtry that.. :)
BasicModelling 3 years ago
Should I undercoat the whole plane wih silver and then blue just to reveal some wear afterwards with sandpaper or should I make it like you did? Good work though. Mine is Italieri's.
BillyJimmyLee 3 years ago
That is up to you.. but I'd try the silver undercoat.. a technique I'm going to pratice myself soon, to try it out.. :) The Italeri kit is good, looking forward to seeing it built.. :)

God Bless Colonel Gregory "Pappy" Boyington USMC, (December 4, 1912 - January 11, 1988) was an American fighter ace. Boyington flew initially with the American Volunteer Group ("The Flying Tigers") in the Republic of China Air Force during the Second Sino-Japanese War.
PappyStu 3 years ago
He later commanded the famous U.S. Marine Corps squadron, VMF-214 ("The Black Sheep Squadron") during World War II. Boyington became a prisoner of war later in the war. For his U.S. Marine Corps service he was awarded the Navy Cross and the Medal of Honor.
PappyStu 3 years ago
This was his favorite aircraft!!!
PappyStu 3 years ago
God bless ALL.. I haven't really looked into the Pacific War as such, or as much as I have the European Theatre of Operations, for obvious reasons.. but I hope to build a collection of US and Japanese figher and possibly bomber planes in due course.. :)
BasicModelling 3 years ago
I guess it must be boring if I comment every vid of yours with: Good job, nicely done, great model, perfect work on the model.. so this time I leave that...^^
The idea of the inverted wing was to keep the undercarriage legs short and enable sufficient space for a large prop. The USNavy did not use the Corsair for shipboard service because of the bad forward view and a tendency to swing (schlingern), cured with the later versions.
BaronKrolok 3 years ago
Yes, I know it was to keep the undercarriage short, even though to me it looks no shorter than on any other aircraft! But it was also to save space, in combination with the wingfold, as a gullwing allowed for a larger wing area / greater lift without it protruding more than neccesary! :) The British were obviously less cautious than the US, as they used carrierbased Corsairs well before the US Navy.. :)

hey i made a vid bout my newly bought Academy F-15C eagle and ima put it on youtube next monday cuz im caped at the moment

Smooth plane. I always had a soft spot for that 'elbow' wing design. It makes it look so cool.
PuppyZwolle 3 years ago
Yes, it does.. but somehow it looks more menacing when put on a Stuka.. I guess it's about time I dig the old Airfix Stuka kit out the loft.. :)

BasicModelling 3 years ago
The Vought corsair model. an d the Spi above should read SPITFIRE.
EmCSpiteri 3 years ago
That I understood! As for a bomber version of the Spitfire, I guess I could get one done at some point, I have two Revell kits in 1/48 scale that would be suitable! Except for the fact that when I build the first one, it will be a Mk.IX from the Egyptian Air Force, pitted against a Mk.IX of the Israeli Air Force.. the only war that saw Spit vs. Spit, hense my interest in the matter! :)
Tuberglue 3 years ago
I thought it would be selfish of me not to make a first comment solely about my own modelling situation ;P
As it stand I just realised after weighting a hole weak for something in the post, that I gnever click 'order' in the first place. Alas the hot foam cutter may arrive monday, then exciting natters/ la-5 cowling etc shall commence!
SmiertSpionem 3 years ago
Yes, a bit of order is never wrong.. :) Much looking forward to further aerodynamical experiments on your side.. :)
BasicModelling 3 years ago
How much did it cost?!
SmiertSpionem 3 years ago
Well, if Sir had watched the WHOLE video (ahem) you would have seen the price!! But to save you the pain of suffering through it again, I paid £6.50 for it! You can get a Revell kit for less than that, which is also very good, AND gives you a night fighter radar-pod to boot, but the decals are for two KOREAN-war versions only.. and I wanted a WWII plane.. :)
BasicModelling 3 years ago
They say the Italeri is a good one, but I wouldn't know as I 'made' it at 10 years old and left a rather mutated kit on my shelf.
SmiertSpionem 3 years ago
I've never tried it, haven't even seen the kit, but judging by the Box Art it's another KOREAN version, similar to the Revell kit.. I hope to get my hands on some decals for the Night Fighter version used very successfully in Korea, Hannants have some in stock, but it will have to wait a while.. :) Maybe TOZO can get me some, he offers the same service as SBX now, but a bit slower! :)
BasicModelling 3 years ago
The difference is that HE / Tozo remembers to order the stuff you ask for, whereas SBX doesn't always, which is frustrating.. to say the least! I guess SBX will suffer less orders from me in the future, as you'd think he up his service a bit now he has a bit of 'local' competition, but he clearly hasn't bothered to shape up.. :) ...whereas TOZO rolls out the red carpet for me these days! And to me, personal service counts for a lot, I'm old fashioned that way!! Ha! :) :)
BasicModelling 3 years ago
What does TOZO stand for? At the moment I'm very pleased with modelsforsale - they have such a big range (including some fancy if expensive italian fighters G.55, Re2000 etc - that I didn't know existed in 1/72). Also some Jap fighters...
SmiertSpionem 3 years ago
I believe it stands for TOy ZOne.. or possibly 'Tosser'.. :) Beware the Reggiane Re2000, there's a kit on the market that's downright AWFUL, I know because I bought one with the intention of building a RSwAF J20, as flown by the F10 Fighter Wing during WWII.. it's now binned with no regret, but I've kept the decals, in the vain hope that a better kit one day will be available on the market.. (I've just seen a Special Hobby kit at Hannats, but I don't think it's the right version, sadly..) :P
BasicModelling 3 years ago
By the way, the ONLY preserved Re 2000 in the world is that of a Swedish J20.. at the Swedish Flygvapen Museum.. I hope to go there one day!! :)
BasicModelling 3 years ago
The make of the AWFUL Re2000 is 'Legato', by the way.. don't go there, you WILL be wasting your money big time.. :(
BasicModelling 3 years ago
The one I was drooling over was 'special hobby'
SmiertSpionem 3 years ago
That should hopefully be ok then, I have not seen that kit other than a picture of the box art on the H website.. :) Having checked it on the web, it seems a bit better than the legato kit, but the canopy is still vac-form, which was the main reason why I binned the legato kit in the first place.. Vac-form is NOT easy to get accurate, I've never succeeded! But then again, that could be me not having a fine enough pair of scissors.. :(
BasicModelling 3 years ago
I haven't ever completed my Vacuform Ca-15 (It's a pain in the butt)
SmiertSpionem 3 years ago
I can understan that a vac-form kit must be very difficult, I doubt I'll ever even try one.. It's bad enough just trying to cut out a vac-form canopy, so I do not blame you.. :)
BasicModelling 3 years ago
I think the art is in leaving a small area outside the edge of the canopy and carefully sanding it off, instead of cutting all the way up to 'the danger line' ;)
SmiertSpionem 3 years ago
Yes, I know that now.. but I rather pass, even if it means that some of those planes I'd love to have in the collection, like a Swedish S31 Spitfire (Mk. XIX to you) never is likely to be built my me! I had a kit, but yet again botched the canopy.. I hope one day somebody will have the GOOD SENSE to make one with all parts injected! In the meantime I have the decals waiting.. As for the Re 2000, it wasn't just the canopy that was bad with the legato kit.. virtually the whole kit was useless..
Tuberglue 3 years ago
I think there were WWII and Korean options :)
SmiertSpionem 3 years ago
The comments and replies are stacked in a bit of a funny order.. I take it we're talking Corsair and not Reggiane?? :) It may well offer a WWII option, Italeri normally have decals for quite a few versions with their kits.. :)
Tuberglue 3 years ago
Yes corsair ;)
SmiertSpionem 3 years ago
I'vought to reply something clever here, but can't think of anything at all... ;)
