This is a constant and very disturbing condition which never seem to disappear!
the peripheral vision up, the bottom and sides on left eye seem significantly reduced and it's hard to both see and focus beacuse of the horrible flickering is following your eye movements.
I have no idea how I got this but it came very insidious late in the teenage years.
I'm not sure if it is a shadow but there is something disturbing and feels like it's blocking almost half of my inner visual field (I can see through it) but it very annoying with the black flickering all the time.
it seems like the more i stare without blink the more it seems to spread in the field.
when i stare at myself in the mirror only my left eye without blinking my face kinda disappeared after only some few seconds? :O it felt like some parts of the visual field was going blind!
I have a constant distracting flickering/shimmering shadow in my vision which is particularly on the inner half of the vision in my left eye. This flickering/shimmering shadow seems to never disappear and follows my eye movements. It seems to be generally dark in color.
When I'm out in the sunlight or around bright lights, it feels like the flickering shadow turns red in color and feels like i have a flickering red light in front of my visual field.
i had this done some years ago. at the time i did not want to know what they were going to do. now i'm interested in the procedure. And it worked out well for me.
The puffing lasts about 3 days and the pain in the eye also stops about 3 days as well....its not a bad thing to go through...py puffing has gone down but is still bloddshot like the guy said...good luck to everyone having the surgery done!
while having this surgery your supposed to be unconscious, but i of course wake up as soon as the last suture is finished and start punching doctors and nurses because i thought they were aliens
Had this done about 12 hours ago, under local. *Means I was awake the whole time. Hurt like hell for a while after the local wore off, but getting tolerable now...
I shouldn't be on the computer... But you can only lay face-down in bed for so long before you need to get up and do SOMETHING!
I had a scleral buckle placed in my right eye in 2007 and it was successful. However, I have experienced some head pain in the are whenever I strain, cough, sneeze, or bend over. I will have an exam soonto find out if the pain is actually due to the surgery. Has anyone else have the same problem?
I just got one of these done a few days ago, I was awake but sort of out of it during the procedure, no pain at all but I was sick as hell a few hours later, could not even drink a glass of water without throwing up. I got over that within a day and the worst part now is having to lay face down in bed, my back is killing me. I guess it will all be worth it if my vision gets back to normal.
yeah, man, the face down part is the worst part of the recovery. What made things worse was that I didn't have the support equipment, I actually didn't have enough for that. so it made things a lot more unbearable. I just had to be face down for a little over a week. I just read game informer magazines, listened to movies, sleep, and listen to music. The face down thing truly sucks, it's either that or undergo another surgery to reinsert the bubble. Good luck on your recovery, man.
I had the same operation 14 years ago when the operating procedure was not as advanced as today. Thanks to my doctor for performing a sucessfully even when the operating procedure was not as advanced as today.

I had this procedure done on my left eye 2 days ago, and I want to sincerely thank my surgeon for saving my sight. This was a wonderfully well done and informative video, thank you for creating it.

I had this done yesterday and now agree that eye surgons deserve every penny! This is my 3rd retinal detachment in 6 yrs due to Lasik surgury. What a mistake that was!
I had this surgury done yesterday and watched this out of curiosity. I now realize that eye surgeons deserve EVERY penny they charge our insurance company! This is my third retinal detachment as a result from Lasik surgury 6 yrs ago 2 in one eye and now just 3 weeks ago one in the other eye. Although this one went much smoother and this time they used an oil bubble instead of an air bubble which will be removed in 6months. This was used to insure success this time. Scleral buckle was also used.
wow great video, i had the exact same operation as this on april 26th, didnt realise there was so much involved in it, now i realise why i was so sore after, theres a lot of cutting and pulling. 2.5 weeks post op my gas bubble is gone, redness starting to reduce, no pain as such, certain eye movements do hurt and bending. i am flying the end of this month, which will be 6 weeks post op, my doctor said i will be ok to do so, does anyone know what activities you may NOT do ever after this surgery?
@NeedleInTheGroove1 Only 2 hours??? and only sore??? Dx did they like drug you up after or what? also did they put you too sleep? or freeze it XD Im a bit lost
I just had an emergency surgery on march 27th 2011 which was a scleral buckle and nothing else. This video really opened my eye(the right eye is prosthetic) and I'm glad I found it! My eye was red for 3 weeks and my vision in my one eye came back well enough to drive without glasses, but I have them anyway.
I had this surgery done once and just got a vitrectomy again and yes its unpleasant but knowing what i knew after first procedure it was not stressful at all the second time..... The recovery is the worst!
he says its like looking at a broken tv set. you can see but everything is cracked and he can only see light when he looks at it directly. what my main concern is, is if this damage is repairable.and if so, what are the chances he will see the same way he used too. this is very terrifying to me because an eye is not something you can replace, and ill have to live with the guilt trip for a long time, despite the fact that he was until the incident, a very abusive and raging alcoholic.
hi there. about a month and a half ago, me and my dad got into a fight, and unintentionally, i punched him in the eye and it cracked his eye open. he went the next morning to the hospital fro surgery to sew the eye back together. the doctors told him that the eye looks like a squished grape. it had a little tear in it. anyway, he got back his results from a screening just today, and they told him that he has damage to the retina. my dad tells me that he cant see anything but a little light
@IchliebeTokioHotel17 It's not as bad as it looks. Your eye will be blood red for a week or two, but will soon return to normal color. I know, I had this procedure done! :)
@IchliebeTokioHotel17 Not really. There's a little soreness and they give you pain killers if you need them. So all in all, it was pretty much a cakewalk!
Operation 2 yrs ago. Retina detached because of botched cataract surgery. A 20 min procedure took 80 min. Operation employed blocked optic nerve procedure. Retina surgeon didnt know this and was about to block the optic nerve again, 5 days after botched operation. I told him. He went "Ooops." Keep surgeon informed. They don't do their homework. Retina reattachment was successful. But many photoreceptors stopped functioning. I am 20% blind in one eye. Improved from 35% blind 2 years ago
i have mine done about 2 years ago. i was 31 years old when i had it done and i have to say the pro's and con's of this surgery....the pro's is: you dont have to go to work for 30 + days, you can get plenty of rest at home...the cons....for about 10 days i remember i was dizzy as hell... must of been the drugs they gave me or the gas inside the eye, its not fun putting eye drops in 3 times a day, you cant do much with your life at least for 7 days so much sure you at least have a radio
I had this done along with laser and the gas bubble less then a week ago. Since it was on the bottom of my eye I have to be face down 16 hours a day and to sleep have to be on my left side for about 3 weeks :( but I'm getting better now :)
I had this surgery done in september, it dosn't really hurt afterwards but its very annoying your eye drips constantly first few weeks is just plain awful , I still a tiny bit of imflammation, but its slowly going away bit by bit,
It had been six years for me. It was my left eye followed by right eye ten days later. This video is AMAZING!!! God bless my surgeon and his team for preserving my vision! God Bless Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. I wish I could thank the first person who said "Yes you can try this surgery on my eyeball."
I had my first scleral buckle when I was 17 due to major detachment in my left eye. it was horrible. took about a month to recover with constant pain. I remember feeling my pulse pounding in my eye giving me terrible migranes. all the doctors prescribed me were Tylinol 3s which were pretty much useless.
Had my second one in the right eye when i was 19 from minor detachment. quick and easy recovery and i made sure i got some percocet this time.
Hello Doctor.... I have a buckle like thing in my left eye..... I had surgery for retina detachment in my left eye when I was 6-8 years old... I am 25 now.... my vision in the left eye is blurred.... I cant read but can merely recognize colors and things moving from my left eye.... I wish to get the scleral buckle removed ...... will this cause any harm to me or my blurred eyesight ??
Had my scleral buckle surgery done in 1990 at Wills Eye in Philly and just got a full checkup today. It is still stable. The biggest problem I had was learning how to coordinate my eyes to read again after the surgery because the other eye had cryosurgery to stabilize weaknesses in the retina at the same time. Both were pretty invasive surgeries at the time.
awesome surgery videos. you provide a very educational service to all of us, doctors included. It's nice to see how different surgeons have slightly different techniques and styles. very nice.
how does it feel to be an eye surgeon. I still can't dissect a cadaver properly without destroying all nerves. I don't even know if I'll ever be able to do a surgery.
don't know why they don't approve balloons in the US. ask the FDA. they work well and have the best success rates supposedly with buckles being second and vitrecomy being a close third. PVR is a very difficult problem and more common with vitrectomy. so, buckle is the best option for most cases.
I had temporary ballon, scleral buckle/vitrectomy, then another vitrectomy with gas ballon, then vitrectomy with silicone oil. My problem has been scar tissue attaching to the retina and causing both a wrinkle and detaching the retina again. I am still having problems but we are holding off for a couple of months to let some healing take place. All of this in less than three months. Condition I think is called PVR. Anyone else had this problem?
@dar46750 Sorry, may terminology is incorrect as well as my spelling. I did not have a temporary balloon, it was a gas bubble. All my procedures worked in attaching the retina, but the PVR cause the retina to wrinkle and detach again untill they used the silicone oil. This was about six weeks ago. The PVR has caused some areas to wrinkle, but no tears yet. From what I have read, it may take more than one attempt for success. At this point they have removed the lens to be replace later.
@dar46750 I had to get two surgeries done on my right eye because my retina detached ah... and I think I have to go back to surgery again, but I think its useless because I've lost sight on my right eye already.
I want my buckle removed...I'm pissed the doctor didn't offer the temporary balloon option in the first place as my detachment was minor. It's so invasive and causes me a lot of discomfort!
Not pretty! I had this surgery on my left eye about 15 years ago at the Royal Eye and Ear Hospital in Melbourne Australia. Recovery involved the most intense pain I ever experienced, before and since. However, I would not hesitate to do it again to preserve my vision. And I cannot be more grateful to the surgeons and doctors who saved my eyesight.
I had my surgery 3 days ago. Everyday there are improvement. my pain is as follows: sharp needle like pokes on both sides of the eye, that last 30 secs. Extra strength Advil/Tylenol does the trick. My Dr. prescribed a sleeping pill and it really helps with recovery. It's very ugly, and I tire easily. My vision is a blur, the blind is no longer there. I see a full circle of colored blurry objects. I am getting the other eye done in 4 days.
Amazing. I had this done four weeks and 2 days ago....my gas bubble was gone in about 7-8 days, the main pain had dissipated in about 5 days - now it is nothing a couple of aspirin won't help. Still have some "chlorine pool eye" effect and a slight blur but it is improving day by day....... soon to get new prescription and go forward from there. It DOES take a long time......
My brother-in-law had this a few weeks ago... he was on some powerful pain stuff and he said it didn't help much. Hurt like you would not believe according to him.
My mother had this procedure done 19 years ago when she was 75. This was because the first bubble done on an out-patient basis didn't repair the detached retina. I remember she was in pain and sad to have distorted vision. Today, at 94, she only notices a slight blurr and a little wiggly distortion. Some time after the surgery, the MD wanted to peel the scar, but we didn't want her to go through any similar pain, so she didn't.
Had this surgery a little over a year ago after my son poked my eye during a game of basketball. Didn't take as well as the doctor wanted so had a vitrectomy a month later and had to lay on my face for two straight weeks to keep the air bubble to the back of my eye. That was pure torture. Now I have a cataract from all this mess and will have my lens removed and replaced. By that time, I should have a bionic eye and be able to see again. I hope.
My mom was doing her hair and accidently got hair perm in her eye. She used a cotton swab to get it out she ended up removing her retina and tearing half of it off on the other eye....
can this heal on its own or will she have to undergo surgery?? im really worried about this because i dont want her to go blind.
Hey Thurisazrage. You must have confidence in you surgeon. Just had this procedure done 2 days ago. When I got home on the first day it was some what uncomfortable when the freezing wore off & don't make the same mistake as I did ate lunch before the freezing wore off
I recently underwent this surgery - thank you very much for posting, this really helped me see what was happening. Thank you eye surgeons (and all medical professionals), you are truly miracle workers!
I had the buckle sewed onto one eye over 20 years ago to repair a slightly detatched retina. I caught the detatchment early, so I suffered minimal vision loss (no problem). Last year I had cataract removed (both eyes). Very easy operation. However, I noticed some blur in eye that had buckle. May have existed for years, but I thought it was only a cataract. This month I'll have a vitrectomy (replace vitreous material) . Retina, lens, etc all otherwise look good.
i have had 4 ops on the same eye. 3 in the last 6 weeks! i now have silicone oli in my eye which will need removing in a few months. i have had a gas bubble put in . cryo therapy, laser treatment and a schleral buckle in place. ouch. i find this video gruesome but fascinating.
Hello Guys , i am abbas from Norway. i had Retinal Detachment on both of my eyes. first 5 yeras ago when i was 21 and they used sceral or Slicon surgery and it was very satisfying . Now i had two surgeries on my left eye , in the space of 10 days . i can't see anything now after two weeks . Dr says that it's becasue of gass bobble in the eye , i can see a bit when i had my head down. I feel looking trough water .Have anyone else same opration and how long it takes to get your vision back.
I had this same procedure done on both my eyes (one when I was 21 and the second when I was 22). I was awake for the second time around and after seeing this, I understand more of what actually went on during the procedure. As herointraining1 stated, I too have problems with double vision and trouble driving at night. Worst part by far was the recovery. The second eye took me two full weeks of recovery to be able to use. I definitely would not wish this surgery on anyone.
i had this surgery myself... with buckle and the gas bubble and everything.. im 32 years old now... i was 30 when i had it... did i feel anything? nope... just the eye drops before they knocked me out. one of the eye drops burned a little bit. they give you tissue to relief the tears. after 45 min. or so.. i was out cold. woke up... felt very dizzy... stayed dizzy for 10 days.. i counted it... no pain though, would do it again if i had to
I had this done last week, still sore didn't realise it was so gruesome, I might watch the rest another time..

hi there. about a month and a half ago, me and my dad got into a fight, and unintentionally, i punched him in the eye and it cracked his eye open. he went the next morning to the hospital fro surgery to sew the eye back together. the doctors told him that the eye looks like a squished grape. it had a little tear in it. anyway, he got back his results from a screening just today, and they told him that he has damage to the retina. my dad tells me that he cant see anything but a little light

WTF! THEY REALLY CHOP THAT THING UP! HOW DOES THAT EYE EVER HEAL?! Dear lord help the people that have this surgery.
IchliebeTokioHotel17 11 months ago
@IchliebeTokioHotel17 It's not as bad as it looks. Your eye will be blood red for a week or two, but will soon return to normal color. I know, I had this procedure done! :)

@corwin11412 did it like...hurt?! Omg I'd cry so much if I had to have this done....
IchliebeTokioHotel17 11 months ago

I wish to get the scleral buckle removed ...... will this cause any harm to me or my blurred eyesight ??
rajm3 1 year ago
Had my scleral buckle surgery done in 1990 at Wills Eye in Philly and just got a full checkup today. It is still stable. The biggest problem I had was learning how to coordinate my eyes to read again after the surgery because the other eye had cryosurgery to stabilize weaknesses in the retina at the same time. Both were pretty invasive surgeries at the time.

don't know why they don't approve balloons in the US. ask the FDA. they work well and have the best success rates supposedly with buckles being second and vitrecomy being a close third. PVR is a very difficult problem and more common with vitrectomy. so, buckle is the best option for most cases.
knarainmd 1 year ago
I had temporary ballon, scleral buckle/vitrectomy, then another vitrectomy with gas ballon, then vitrectomy with silicone oil. My problem has been scar tissue attaching to the retina and causing both a wrinkle and detaching the retina again. I am still having problems but we are holding off for a couple of months to let some healing take place. All of this in less than three months. Condition I think is called PVR. Anyone else had this problem?
dar46750 1 year ago
@dar46750 Sorry, may terminology is incorrect as well as my spelling. I did not have a temporary balloon, it was a gas bubble. All my procedures worked in attaching the retina, but the PVR cause the retina to wrinkle and detach again untill they used the silicone oil. This was about six weeks ago. The PVR has caused some areas to wrinkle, but no tears yet. From what I have read, it may take more than one attempt for success. At this point they have removed the lens to be replace later.
dar46750 1 year ago
@dar46750 I had to get two surgeries done on my right eye because my retina detached ah... and I think I have to go back to surgery again, but I think its useless because I've lost sight on my right eye already.

temporary balloon not available in US. if you're vision is salvaged, your surgery was a success.
knarainmd 1 year ago
@knarainmd why is that?

I hope.

Hello.
My mom was doing her hair and accidently got hair perm in her eye. She used a cotton swab to get it out she ended up removing her retina and tearing half of it off on the other eye....
can this heal on its own or will she have to undergo surgery?? im really worried about this because i dont want her to go blind.
please let me know

I had the buckle sewed onto one eye over 20 years ago to repair a slightly detatched retina. I caught the detatchment early, so I suffered minimal vision loss (no problem). Last year I had cataract removed (both eyes). Very easy operation. However, I noticed some blur in eye that had buckle. May have existed for years, but I thought it was only a cataract. This month I'll have a vitrectomy (replace vitreous material) . Retina, lens, etc all otherwise look good.

OH MY GOOOOOOOOOOOD, Im so scared, I HAVE BEEN TOLD I MAY DEVOLOPE RETNAL DETACH. PLEASE, OH PLEASE GOD NOOOOOOOOOO
THURISAZRAGE 2 years ago
Charate1972 2 years ago
It's not as bad as it looks, lots of cutting and sewing but it heals quickly. pain killers aren't really necessary.

i have had 4 ops on the same eye. 3 in the last 6 weeks! i now have silicone oli in my eye which will need removing in a few months. i have had a gas bubble put in . cryo therapy, laser treatment and a schleral buckle in place. ouch. i find this video gruesome but fascinating.

I had scleral buckle surgery on both eyes within the last year. My left eye had surgery last August and my right eye on January 4, 2010.
What are the prospects of regaining nearly 20/20 vision afterward? Both eyes will need cataract removal in the near future too,.
Any feedback from past clients?
No fun!

Gas bubble is reduced to 50% in about 8-10 weeks (so ur vision will become better as time progreses)
