The underground comedy, the drug culture and humor that went with it. The people back then got it. That's all that matters. And it was groundbreaking and important. And all of these up and coming hacks owe him and his peers a huge debt.

My introduction to Andy was this "Mighty Mouse" song. If you don't get it, well how do you "explain" a joke? It may have been the times. I think that by doing things that really aren't funny and piss people off, he was playing against our expectations that a comedian or entertainer is someone who makes you happy. An entertainer, as far as Andy was concerned, is one who provokes emotion. Laughter, confusion, anger, boredom. I think that as an artist he wanted to deconstruct these and reproduce them in a live audience. This further poses the question of the audience's role as part of the art piece rather than just the consumer.
My dad had quoted this while I was growing up but I had never seen the performance untill a few months ago when they re-aired the first episode of SNL. Thanks for putting this up so I could see it again! :D
While I think Andy Kaufman was quite a great artist, I also think that with the boom of the internet, mainly YouTube, if it was anybody else other than Kaufman doing this bit originally, it would have stunk on ice.

Yes I do get it. I think it's not funny though because the concept of it is not original anymore. Whether this was done in the 60's or 70's or whatever era it was, annex 2008 it's an obsolete joke.
This can only be funny when people don't expect this and never have seen anything like this. But there is no actual joke in it, the acting of the comedian is the joke itself. That can be very funny as long as it is new. But I have seen this done more than once in better ways, I watch more comedians.
I think this is one of the most brilliant and funniest sketches that,not only the great 'artist of avant-garde' Andy Kaufman,but in my opinion,the entire mankind could ever conceive:-)

I loved Andy's style since I was a kid, didn't like Jim's much before MotM. Then I understood Jim needed all those extreme performances as a rehearsal to portray Andy's genius as flawlessly as he did.
Andy and Jim share birthday, 17 January. Weird, isn't it?

Yes I do get it. I think it's not funny though because the concept of it is not original anymore. Whether this was done in the 60's or 70's or whatever era it was, annex 2008 it's an obsolete joke.
This can only be funny when people don't expect this and never have seen anything like this. But there is no actual joke in it, the acting of the comedian is the joke itself. That can be very funny as long as it is new. But I have seen this done more than once in better ways, I watch more comedians.

I think this is one of the most brilliant and funniest sketches that,not only the great 'artist of avant-garde' Andy Kaufman,but in my opinion,the entire mankind could ever conceive:-)
A real piece of history.This gives me a great smile everytime I watch it.
And then Andy:he has never considered himself a comedian("I've never told a joke in my life!":)),but yet he is a great deal more amusing than many 'real comedians' out there,still today
