  • I don't get it D:

  • WELL THATS BCUZ UR DUMB

  • tiomoti i sweer 2 gud

  • That is what I like about Kaufman. Either you get it or you do not. He was one of a kind and has a selective audience and was not for the masses. In this bit, it was funny to see a guy come on stage on a major show and play the Mighty Mouse theme song and have Andy just waiting to "Come and save the day." It works on many levels. Visually it is funny, the Mighty Mouse song is funny and having Andy do nothing when he was supposed to do more than what was expected on an important show was funny.

  • Heh, when you put it that way :3

  • amazing

  • one of the greatest comic geniuses ever

  • I love "what the fuck?" moments.

Andy Kaufman produces more of those than anyone else I know, therefore I love him.

  • One of the Top 20 skits from SNL.

  • Brilliant!

  • Buy "My Dinner with Andre" and "My Breakfast with Blasi." You'll die laughing at the comparison. The idiots who want to keep copyrighted material off of YouTube don't understand it is creating a new audience for sales! How would I have reached all of you except via the YouTube post???????

  • he could stand and not do anything and it would be genius

  • I love this type of humor.. Such greatness

  • The genius in Andy Kaufman is that he strays the lines between comedy and reality. Bravo.

  • i dont get or care about andy kaufman but you cant compare this man to those pieces of shit.

no one is making a movie portraying dane cook or carlos mencia's life and career any time soon

  • thems fightin words!!!

  • Andy Kaufman is awesome

  • hahaha this is from the first ever episode of SNL, i love it.

  • brilliant

  • pure, utter genius.

  • The Genius of Andy Kaufman can be explained in that you never knew what to expect.

  • Genius

  • BRAVO

  • Frickin Genius

  • jajajajjajajaj COOOOOOL

  • I dont why, but i love reading these lol

their rediculous i know but thats what makes em so damn funny "this is scary coz it happened to my friend" hahahaha what a load.

  • Context is everything. You can't get that from a two minute youtube clip. So don't bother explaining it to those who don't get it. It's beyond them at this point. They missed it.

  • Marijayjay and Biginpittsburgh have both put it perfectly. If you don't get it it can't be explained. You either do or you don't.

  • the moves r N art NO1 EVER DID B4 git it now?

  • 2 Nadrianarts: Its in the silence, in what he does not. As an audience you'll expect him to entertain you. Then when he does nothing at all, you will grow a tension inside, maybe feel even sorry for this clumsy nervous guy, or feeling misplaced like you, saying whats so funny about this.

then when he finally makes his move, its only for one sentence! and suddenly he knows how to move and look good. for about four seconds, and he falls back to his insecure character.... beautiful!

  • Brilliant!

  • He goes from nervous to this beautiful confidence. It's a lesson in facing your fears. If you just trust it you can be more than you think you are.

There is always some truth in humor.

  • ...Wat... XD

  • Epic it will all ways be epic

  • La pequeña hillary clinton

  • He was ahead of his time and a true original. He also did everything by his own rules.

  • I will always love Andy Kaufman. He was a true genius.

  • Im having trouble understand exactly why this is funny, he's just standing there fidgeting with his fingers and partially swaying, whats funny about that ?

  • I don't know what's so funny about it...I just know that it is.

  • lo gracioso es lo nervioso que esta, como si no supiera que hacer hahaha

eres un gringo acostumbrado a Hannah Montana

  • I have to agree with you too, it didn't really make any sense to me either.

  • I'm not trying to be mean, I just dont get what is funny about it, could somebody that think he's a "genius" explain it ?

  • Stop watching people like Dane Cook and maybe in a few years you'll "get it."

  • There's no explaining it. The entire decade would have to be explained in order to understand. The counter culture finally breaking into mainstream. The underground comedy, the drug culture and humor that went with it. The people back then got it. That's all that matters. And it was groundbreaking and important. And all of these up and coming hacks owe him and his peers a huge debt.

  • YAY! He's so funny!

  • the best

  • I'll always have a huge soft spot in my heart for Andy :)

This is one of the most adorable skits EVER!

  • genial

  • I remember seeing this when it aired and thinking it was the funniest thing I had ever seen. But how can you explain it to anybody. And why is it so funny? I don't really understand why, but it has remained one of my favorites all these years.

  • There he went and saved the day...

  • genio

  • How you people can put him a thumbs down it's even on the andy's websites. Dead or alive he will never really die... Now put me a thumb down and spam me bunch of dumbass (BTW This insult doesn't belong to you Puzllementarians)

  • He's still alive.

  • Yanks??? How do you now they weren't flown in from texas? And I hate too admit it, cause i really don't like american comedians, but Andy was one of the best and most talanted comedians ever. Above all he was original.

  • He wasn't a comedian.

  • and you say this why?

  • Ever watch the movie Man on the Moon?

The movie that was based on his own life as an entertainer, not a comedian.

  • He was a "song and dance" man wasnt he, an entertainer.

He didnt want to be known as a comedian.

    'Original' definately!

Jim Carrey got it spot on in Man on the Moon, really enjoyed that movie!

  • You should try to be a bit more open minded. Try not hating based on ones nation. It's sort of futile.

  • Andy Kaufman was a genius he was a master at what he did. he could manipulate any situation or anyone for his own pleasure, witch was and still is a rare talent. there will never be anyone like him again. if he was alive today i believe the world would be a better place. long live the king, long live ANDY KAUFMAN

  • My introduction to Andy was this "Mighty Mouse" song. If you don't get it, well how do you "explain" a joke? It may have been the times. I doubt that someone who never saw "Mighty Mouse" would find this funny, for instance. And many if not most of us watching SNL back in those days were stoned. That helped. But mostly, I think that Andy was so wildly different.... going from the likes of Bob Hope, Milton Berle and Johnny Carson to this character suddenly! Comedy often is about surprise.

  • Andy was fantastic, one of the greatest talents ever

  • Oh, it's comedy alright! The simplicity of elegance - no one would try what he did. This short routine shows how unique he was...

  • ANDY KAUFMAN FOREVER!!!

    <3

He was THE best at doing what he did... not comedy, but whatever he called it, it was THE best!!!!

  • He always said he was a "song and dance man".

  • I think Andy is one of the best at doing nothing

  • A classic, back when Saturday Night was raw and good...RIP Andy, you were great!

  • I think that no one really truly understand andy's kind of humor.. tho i think he is pretty funny for me <3

  • all these comments about it being pure genius and attacking others that don't understand it...without one person trying to explain why it is pure genius.......hmmmm

  • man, to all you Jim Carrey lackey's, you don't get the point about what Andy was tryin to do. Kaufman's humor was so unique during that point in history it didnt require a full on antic "in your face" or vulgar expletives to drive his message.

Nothing against Carrey, the man has his own style of humor which I too find laughable. But he is no Andy Kaufman.

  • hahaha and i'm not jim carrey

  • ahahah lol this always makes me laugh!! and look, he was the original, so jim carey couldn't have made it better! i love jim carey but this is a total classic!!

  • What a genius! I totaly agree with goldenagenut and xtop23's comment - PURE G-E-N-I-U-S!!!!

  • Unbelievable... He wasn't clownin' around at all there and at the same time he was funnier, than any clown... So simple... and so funny... Great idea... great comedian mister Kauffman!

  • this gets funnier each time i watch it

  • This is John McCain's new theme song.

  • We're not worryin' at all.....we're just listenin' for his call!

"HEEERE I COME TO SAVE THE DAAAYYY!"

That means that John McCain is ON THE WAAAYYY!!

  • OMG! I was just telling my friends at work that I thought John McCain has a dangerous hero complex and I started mocking him by singing, 'Here I come to save the day!' My buddy just sent me this link and I see that other great minds were having a similar notion. ;-)

  • Gee, thank you Senator McKeating...er I mean McCain.

The economy is so much safer now with your bold move to go to Washington to control & orchestrate a Wall Street bailout. (Even though you haven't cast a vote in the Senate since April, I'm sure everyone's awaiting you with bated breath.)

Will you tell us all about it at the debates on Friday? Or, if you get tied up and can't make it, just send Sarah. She's ready, right?

    Save us, oh, save us!

(BTW Andy's bit STILL cracks me up.)

  • "McCain is Andy Kaufman in his Mighty Mouse costume - 'Here I Come to Save the Day,'" Barney Frank said as he left a Thursday morning caucus meeting with House Democrats.

After reading that I went to find Andy to remind me how funny he was. He really seems to be doing a Sarah Palin in an interview impersonation. "He's a maverick."

  • We laughed so hard when this first aired, it still cracks me up. Kaufman was great,he experimented and took chances other comedians simply would not take, the guy had balls and suffered for it,but he was unique, he was himself.

  • how sad for you if you dont understand the humor in this ........ this is pure genius

  • Have an any other person do that and It wouldn't be funny. Andy was a psychiatrist's dream... who knows what went on in his head.

  • this would have been perfect on American Idol.

  • You are really an idiot. He was an original. Just because he didn't conform to the the idea of a "comedian" doesn't mean that he is bad. He would do anything to make the audience laugh and if you can't appreciate that then you're a moron.

  • Wrestling women on stage is Funny..

Performing to a paying audience until they leave out of boredom is funny- where are you from Saidi Arabia??. You would think a commedian banned from SNL would get the point that he isn't funny. .

He was out there in 1973 and he took some getting used to- but by the 80's he was all about looking clever to himself instead of entertaining the audience. .

Every performer worth a nickle knows it is all about the audience experience not their ego- firts

  • I think that by doing things that really aren't funny and piss people off, he was playing against our expectations that a comedian or entertainer is someone who makes you happy. An entertainer, as far as Andy was concerned, is one who provokes emotion. Laughter, confusion, anger, boredom. I think that as an artist he wanted to deconstruct these and reproduce them in a live audience. This further poses the question of the audience's role as part of the art piece rather than just the consumer.

  • The genious is at 44 sec. He's hilarious.

  • My dad had quoted this while I was growing up but I had never seen the performance untill a few months ago when they re-aired the first episode of SNL. Thanks for putting this up so I could see it again! :D

  • Pure genius

  • andy kaufman is my kind of funny. i wish i was alive when this aired.

  • Me too.

  • While I think Andy Kaufman was quite a great artist, I also think that with the boom of the internet, mainly YouTube, if it was anybody else other than Kaufman doing this bit originally, it would have stunk on ice.

Imagine some zit-faced idiot lip-synching to this theme and posting it on here. I doubt if they even had an audience it would help much.

Thank you for being ahead of your time, Andy. You always were fresh and unpredictable.

  • Damn it's such a pity he died so early... He was great and a genius. Very few people understand what he was trying to express. RIP Andy :(

  • I bet Ashley Simpson wished she got the same applause when she lip-synced.

  • Genius, he was truly an artist.

  • This is pure brilliance.

  • this was excellent i saw this on SNL wen i was a kid no 1 knew who he was and the crowd thought it was gr8 this was a gr8 clip thanks 4 posting this

  • O come on.

  • Some people just don't have what it takes... This is absolute genius :D

  • Are you for real?? You actually typed Andy Kaufman in search just to write this in attempts to be cool or funny? Or, will you lie and claim you were looking for "something else (like Saturday Night Live)", and "just happened" to "stumble upon" Andy? Either way, you're a Knucklehead!

  • You know, Jim Carrey did an amazing guy in man on the Moon.

  • has anyone seen Man on the Moon?

Its a bioflick about Andy starring Jim Carrey

    its really good

  • i fuckin love that movie. the role that jim carrey was born to play.

  • he did do a really good job in it

  • Andy Kaufman (1949-1984) R.I.P.

  • ... No, May 16, 2009. Be prepared.

  • i dont get it

    O_o

  • guys a genius...

  • It's funny if you actully know his sense of humor. Look up some more of his stuff, I'm sure you'll like him.

  • Singin along to a record!! A trend started by the "Great" but not really "late" Andy Kaufman! Youtube search of "Andy kaufman rehab' will show you what I mean.

  • lol, im actually watching man on the moon right now

  • Me too! Just finished reading The Great Gatsby =p

  • lol!

  • he's a legend!

  • LMFAO!.Pure Genius Andy Kaufman was funny.I love the Mighty Mouse bit as kid growing up.

  • drinking the water. i love watching these videos

  • This guy was a genius! I don't think Jim, although he did a great job in the rest of the movie, really got this bit right..but I adore them both.

  • I loved Andy's style since I was a kid, didn't like Jim's much before MotM. Then I understood Jim needed all those extreme performances as a rehearsal to portray Andy's genius as flawlessly as he did.

Andy and Jim share birthday, 17 January. Weird, isn't it?

  • Wow yeah, maybe he's like a pre-reincarnation to let the humor live on. XD

  • Milk and cookies anyone?

  • And rockettes, mmm!

  • andy kaufman for ever

  • This is great! Andy Kaufman is absolutley an amazing comedian! Brilliant!

  • brilliant body movement and timing.

  • I see what you did there, you.

  • He builds tension by standing there looking like he doesn't know what he's doing, then he gives the audience a release with the singing.

  • Andy was a poor messed up guy.

Genius comes at a price, but Andy couldn't make the payments.

  • you just dont get it. thats all that is. also a fool for thinking this was in the 60s

  • you are such an asshole.

this isnt just comedy, this is art.

  • Agreed!

  • so true

  • like so much of his work, so stupid it was funny. glad to see him live on in youtube.

  • Genius. Absolute genius.

  • he is a natural

  • tank you veddy much.

  • Even not knowing what he was doing up there its still hilarious, looking at how nervous he looked and that heroic pose its just so funny.

  • he knew exactly what he was doing... lol he acted nervous on purpose

  • I know that. I'm a big fan of Kaufmans work, its just watching him and him creating the illusion that he was nervous is just great.

  • I did a Skit based on his 2 around a month or so ago, at an Anime Convention.

  • Andy fue un genio, a genius

  • andy fukin Kaufman You sly Devil

This is seriously thee funniest shit that i have seen in some time

  • I think this is one of the most brilliant and funniest sketches that, not only the great 'artist of avant-garde' Andy Kaufman, but in my opinion, the entire mankind could ever conceive:-)

A real piece of history. This gives me a great smile everytime I watch it.

And then Andy:he has never considered himself a comedian("I've never told a joke in my life!":)),but yet he is a great deal more amusing than many 'real comedians' out there, still today

He has been the founder of a new kind of performance

  • this is so funny. I don't know how it is, but it just is. I was laughing my ass off when I saw it.

  • Honestly, I thought this was the only REALLY funny skit on the first snl episode.

  • I thought that the show your guns one wasn't too bad, the dino one was gay tho

  • The muppet one? Yes, not funny at all.

  • what about the wolverines?

    or george carlin?
