ill give you $100 to make a gokart version of this(i really dont care if you use junk parts it just has to be running with brakes)also put a pedal on the gokart too..just go to the junkyard and you'll find the parts you need for very low cost
only needed a welder for the minor fram bits. you could probably bolt stuff together to make it work. let's just say, if we didn't have a welder we would have found a way to get similar results.
does it have a good amount of power? cuz im gonna use a 20cc weed eater engine with no clutch and no brakes hahaha. sounds smart rite. o ya and direct drive becuz i dont have unuf skill to make it chain driven
sorry. don't have a pic, but it is not direct drive. we're running straight from the chainsaw sprocket to some half-baked sprocket we attached to the rear wheel.
man, i have bee so disengaged from this thing that i wouldn't know where to start. although, with craigslist being a big venue for gettting broken down parts, i need to do something again. dumpsters and craigslist should do wonders. all we did with this one was took parts out of peoples driveways on junk night.
yeah... it was like a 12" bik frame that we used and we didn't mod the handlebars due to time contraints.. There are a lot of things I'd have done differently with time and parts.
Awesome toy. Impresses me how all you had was the front end of a bicycle to work with. re: Solid lawn mower wheels..aaargh..gutsy effort to ride it! hmmm I have an old weed eater motor...
Man, I always wanted to make some kind of cool remote crontrol toy out of a weed eater motor. I have two of them laying around. I never have had the time to build anything though. I was thinking an RC tank or something. Or perhaps a hovercraft.
If you dig it all out of the trash like we did I think the only expense is time and little bit of welding wire...
If I did it again I'd probably search craigslist and garage sales for a broken 30+ CC chainsaw and go from there.
The clutch is something that could use improvement. The little clutch that was on that little chainsaw as dinky. It was appropriate for the chain blade, but not for driving a scooter with a 210lb person on it.
offroad88-yep, it's a craftsman. it was a small chainsaw, 12". don't know what the CC rating was, but I'm guessing it was low 20's.
thorman6 - post a video if you have one. i'd love to see that. i used to have time to hack around and build crazy stuff like this, but my job and growing family has pretty much killed my ability to do that recently. but i'm always looking for ideas for the future!
My video showes up on the "related" right beside yours. Or search for "chainsaw bicycle" Once you find it check out "more from this user" Snow plow for ATV, windmill generator,
Nice job. Mine is the "chainsaw bicycle" It too was made from trash. I started with a weed eater motor but it went south before the first trial run. I went back to the dump and found one of those cheap little saws just sitting there. It ran geat and like yours, would blow the doors off any little 33cc scooter.
FYI if anyone cares or wants to know, you will typically see the best power to weight ratios coming from top end name brand chainsaws, their are some stihls and husqys that put out over 8HP and only weigh 15 Lbs thats bar and all, take it down to 10 lbs for bare engine.
Most all 2 stroke engs. make the most power above 4000RPM so anthing will need the proper(low) ratio to make use of the powerband
The motor does idle when not excellerating. The chainsaw had a build in centrifugal clutch. I can say that this was probably wasn't the ideal clutch system. It held up for the time that we used the scooter, but it probably wouldn't hold up for daily use over a long period.
does it have more torque then a non chainsaw motor of the same size might? because im debating on using a chainsaw motor on my pocketbike vs a normal pocketbike motor.
I'm thinking that a standard scooter motor probably has more torque, but then again the gear ratio, tire size and other things are a significant factor. This thing did better with top end than with torque. We used to love it when somebody would come down the street on a store-bought scooter. W'ed have to push pedel the scooter to get going, but then we'd blow by them.
My guess is that a better ratio in the shaft and axle sprockets would do a lot of good.
This is my project for the summer! :P

why a broken chainsaw?
do u no what that scooter is called..
and wat size tires did u put on..j.w
milforddbrider22 4 years ago
Because most people don't throw away working chainsaws.
The scooter had no name. That is actually a kid's bike and a frame made from bed rails. There was no base scooter to start with.
The tires are actually lawn mower tires. They weren't even pnuematic because we couldn't find any the right size at the time.
I'm willing to be that you could probably find a scooter during trash day if you drive around some local neighborhoods.

Cost for me was next to nothing. I used scrap I found at the dump and lying around the garage.

thats the type almost all scooter, and even a LOT of ATV's use, the same spring loaded centrifugal clutch that weed whackers, and chainsaws use.
As long as you are not slipping it excessively, it will work for years
Fentanyl3 4 years ago
