What the heck does he mean when he says "manufacturer your own ground plug"? I looked on amazon.com and I found ground plugs, but they look different than the ones in this video. This guy has a long green cable coming from his where he attaches the alligator clip...So what gives? I understood the #1 part where he said just attach it to the case, the second part has me confused because he also says "attach to a NON good ground" then he says "the green LED indicates a GOOD ground" WTF?
I must be lucky then , I've built probably around 200+ computers and never had anything "Short or blow" , I got hard wood floors , Much less static than carpet... Great ideas though!..
@trubritar have you every considered using automotive parts in your builds. Seems like a waste spending so much on a small 3 bank 12cm fan radiator, when you could be using a ar parts for close to the same price second hand? Using a second had car radiator and an electric water pump you have youself some killer cooling power? Sure It would be big and ugly, but nothing a nice case modder couldn't fix... :)
meh, I wouldn't buy one. As long as you touch your case before you unplug it, it is very unlikely that you will build up a harmful amount of static electricity unless you work on your computer on a carpet wearing a blanket, a wool hat, and bunny slippers in very dry air. Still I always hold onto the edges or heatsinks of components.
i never use anything like this i do not ground my self to anything. i have not suffered from shock damage. The last part i had that broke down i threw it out because the cooler fan on my ati 4670 went. The ball barrings failed. I replaced it the same way i replaced my power unit ungrounded. I guess i am lucky.
How does the mat actually dissipate any ESD? as i cannot see how the mat itself would conduct as it is rubber so how does it transfer any excess charge to the ground wire seeing as it is just punched through the mat and is not connected to the other punch through that you attach to your wrist?
excellent review trub! if you are purchasing thousands worth of computer hardware, might as well and minimize the risk with the purchase of this mat. i'm getting one as soon as i'm going to build my client builds.
Blow the whole system clean of dust as well, I always use my antistatic wrist strap, and try to discharge only static electricity storage as well. Anyone ever rapped anyone with static electricity? Well if this happens during installing delicate electronic equipment, viola its gone, maybe. Use and install with caution folks. Take advice. OK!
I have seen the effects of static electricity, as my workplace deals with it, on occasions. Anti staic spray on new carpet is effective as well.
Yeah static is dicey on my account. I have ran into one issue with it in my whole life. I didn't touch anything before touching the RAM chips on my very old PC, that is now gone, and i felt the snap and so did my system it only killed the one chip. in 5 years i have only had that one problem. Opened my PS3 and other peoples electronics nothing. It is just one thing that is there and should be accounted for.
hey man. could u maybe consider doing a video of your computer room? and show of all your gear. more of a little vlog thing? please.. that would bee amazing. and im 100 % sure that im not the only one that wnats you to do that :D
@Blober112 : touching the case will only "Discharge" any Static that is already accumulated, it will not stop fresh build up as you work within the PC....
Hmm have been building Pc's for about 6 years. Most builds I did kept running for about 5 years. So I think I'm either very lucky, or those static discharges aren't half as bad as advertised.
I just for a 146- Piece Computer Tool Kit that has a ASW... My 90 Piece Rosewill computer kit is back in Japan. Now I have the Rosewill 146 and it comes with the ASW switch is nice to have and I recommended that everyone also buy themselves a Professional Computer Tool Kit
I've been working on computers for ten years and never had a problem with static. I kinds find this stuff to be a little bit of snake oil. There is a risk but in my environment It's very minimal.
@trubritar there isn't really much risk if you know other safety precosions...
Usually just grounding yourself will do, and when you are working with stuff in the case itself leave the power corde plugged in for grounding the case and hold the case with one hand....
If you do that and a lot of other simple things you don't really need antistatic mats or bracelets,...
@CRAZCHEVBOY : This is only true if you still have your power lead attached to your PC and plugged into a wall outlet... It may work...However...have you tried installing fiddly little screws and adapters with one hand? It can be a real pain...
@trubritar I live in the south and generally work on computers during the summer so it gets muggy and with hard wood floors and no polyester clothing I doubt I will have a problem.
I guess I could build my computers int he nude but I think I'm safe with a touch to my power supply.
@vearheart42 Same, built hundreds of computers without a problem. Just ground yourself before working, if you get up and move around, ground yourself again before starting a new.
@xC4Rbonx Thanx man .. but u know .. I used a different thermal grease other than the OEM from sapphire .. I got the card from a local shop .. maybe I will try to return the card or something .. I only played with it for 3 months .. all games on max 1920X1200 with that Crossfirex setup ..
Hey trubitar, i've been noticing recently that some products I have been buying aren't being put in anti-static bags anymore, specifically the Rampage III Extreme I bought, this is pretty stupid don't you think?
@kevinsdb1 Hmm didn't even have any anti-static foam, check out trubritars unboxing of if to see what I mean, its literally just sitting in a cardboard box with a cover
Wow i want one. Yesterday i rebuilt my dad's computer to a new case and when i turned it on the power supply just burned on me. Scared the crap out of me. Could ESD be the reason for that? the computer was very old and it rarely would boot up but the power supply was fairly good. oh well i think it would be nice to have something like this, lets just see if i can get one here in Portugal *sigh*

But on another Note I have some Radio Shack Anti Static mat thats around 3x4 and its just a pain int he ass if your working with it since the damn anti static wrist bands bull the freaking thing since they're too damn short. but this one looks like it would actually be a good solution to that problem. I dont open my case that much but the Modright Static Mat might make my day just a tad easier when I do LOL
I have a challenge for everyone here !
Anyone who solves this is a genius !
SO...Bought a GTX 295,My PSU is CM RealPower M620/700 Watts,Quad-SLI Ready, and six Rails with Amps from 19 to 25 and so on.
I use an i7 860,1TB HDD,4 sticks x 2GB Ram 1333Mhz and that´s it.
All my components are new and I guarantee for them(no failures)
Power goes fine,Graphics LED is Green and Blue,PC also...
But there´s no image on screen !
YOU READY? Everytime I turn ON the PC,the monitor SHUTS DOWN/TURNS OFF.
HELP?

This is kinda overrated, componets got stronger and stronger by time and are not as vulnerable anymore as they where in the past.
ESD is still there, but chance or harming your hardware with it is 1 in a million these days.
