My father was killed in a head-on collision on this bridge the night before Thanksgiving, 1971. The roadbed was covered with 'black ice", and the driver of the oncoming car, having no experience driving in such conditions, lost control of her car. My dad was DOA upon arrival at St Vincent's Hospital in Taylorville. The driver of the other car was also killed, and her twin sister was badly injured.
