@rushaholic ; I like how John Candy plays along a bit on "Slow Dance," as he makes that extra effort to put his right hand on Joe's shoulder to hold him in place and guide him with the dancing...
Hilarious, every single time I watch this. I never missed an episode of SCTV through the 70s and early 80s, and am happy to say I have them all on DVD. Highlights of Five Neat Guys Gold include Joe Flaherty's drunkenness (an his flask outline in his pants pocket) and Dave Thomas looks downright lecherous. Such an incredible, creative program.
For those who like the five neat guys, you should watch A Mighty Wind. Great mockumentary about 50-60s folk music directed by Christopher Guest and featuring some SCTV alumni too!
Fred, you are truly my YouTube hero! Whenever I need a quick SCTV fix, you always come through!! It's so awesome that you are sharing the neatness with the world even 30 years after the magic happened. TY.
I have these DVDs at home. There's no doubt that SCTV was the most brilliant comedy show on television, and watching these clips only supports that argument. Talk about an all-star lineup - with these "five neat guys" and Andrea Martin and Catherine O'Hara, this is the best collection of comedic talent we've ever seen on TV. SNL was good - SCTV was ALWAYS delivering creative, hilarious television and satire. How I wish they'd reunite for one more SCTV "telethon" or fundraiser.
@roguehk : I'd love to see that. If John Candy was still with us, I could possibly see a reunion or something. Without him I can't see it happening. It wouldn't feel right.
5 of the funniest people ever on tv. SNL wishes they could have boasted that kind of talent together or at any time. The sad kid in the background of 'Pimples and Pockmarks' slays me every time.
Okay, did anyone else notice Dave Thomas dropping his ice cream at 0:49? lol I wish there were more of these, I'm laughing till it hurts, ow. John Candy's mustache is awesome. Love the gold chinos. "Cooooooome on... and..... put some extra relish on my hot dog." LMAO
As an example of what "SCTV" was spoofing with their 5 Neat Guys bits, consider this actual number by the late Jimmy ("I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus") Boyd from late 1953: "I've Got Those 'Wake Up, Seven-Thirty - Wash Your Ears They're Dirty - Eat Your Eggs and Oatmeal - Rush to School' Blues." Issued on Columbia (4-)40138.
It does seem that the '5 Neat Guys' was (were?) a composite parody of the many vocal groups signed to Columbia Records in the 1950's under Mitch Miller (such as The Four Lads and The Kirby Stone Four) - combined with the rather insipid numbers that they were forced to record.
Of course . . . my point is, the songs heard here seem to be spoofs of the kind of insipid material that Mitch Miller had groups such as The Four Lads and The Hi-Lo's record - not to mention what he had his other artists (i.e. Rosemary Clooney, Guy Mitchell - even the great Tony Bennett) do. Ever heard "Mama Will Bark" - the absolute low point of Frank Sinatra's career, recorded within his last year at Columbia?
I remember this being the first SCTV sketch I had ever seen. I was just a mere 3 years old when I had seen this on an SCTV tape with my parents. To this day, my mom and I still often find ourselves singing "Pimples and Pockmarks". Thanks for the upload!
Haha, yeah... I'm pretty much a zygote compared to the other commenters on this video. =P
By the way, I often find myself asking for some extra relish on my hot dog, regardless of what day of the week it is. I like to live life to extremes.
Poughkeepsiejohn1, everyone must answer for themselves whether they will double-date with Stan and Wendy, and - if so - why. Five Neat Guys were more than just singers. They were philosophers.
Damn straight. Why Thomas Aquinas himself would have deconstructed the interrogative, "Should We Double Date With Stan And Wendy?" with a standard ontological reductionist's response: "No. Better to double-date with Sid and Sue for those bobby-soxers are more happening."
I'm what they call a "self-proclaimed" philosopher and "pseudo intellectual." You don't get such high-faluting titles like those by NOT getting through grade six like I did.
Since I found this I can' tell you how many times I've watched it. Hilarious! Love their impeccably syncopated choreography. And watch Dave Thomas in Pimples and Pockmarks. I wish there were more to watch.
Thisisgoofy, there's one more of 5NG performing at an Oscars-like SCTV award show that I'll post sometime soon. It's not as good as the other two I have up but it is at least more 5NG.
I've loved 5 Neat Guys ever since they played the Belmont back in '53. No group has ever had a wider range; not even The Beatles. Think: "Who Made the Eggsalad Sandwiches" and "I've Got a Hickey on My Shoulder."
"Anastrophe" occurs whenever normal syntactical arrangment is violated for emphasis. For example, saying "echoed the hills" to mean "the hills echoed." With that clarified, you may all discuss.
