yes all of our mediated experiences have that aspect to them...i used to think it was something that was imposed on us that we didn't want, but now i'm seeing that at the same time it seems to be something we actually *do* want, as nothing scares us more than being fully present with a real live human being. now go away. you scare me. :p
i would say its definately worth the reread. its not meant to appreciated for its prose, hes not that kind of an author. just read and think and give it a chance. after, try the story of B (even better)
I hate to be a party crasher, but: if that is the same Daniel Quinn who wrote "Ishmael" then.....
Ouch. He can't write at all. He is confused about history. And, did I mention that he can't write at all? What is the appeal? Am I missing something? Given that I am an idiot of sorts it still seems to me that DQ is an #%&*&$ author. I just have to be honest - for the good of humankind I have to be honest about DQ - even if my honesty is offensive.
My judgement only comes from "Ishmael" and I think it was written about 30 years ago so I might not be justified in my comment. Authors change (occasionally).
it's cool bro but i'm a bit confused, as ishmael was released in 92. dq writes in a very straightforward and accessible style, and i understand why he chose to write that way because that way he can reach the most people. writers make choices about style for various reasons. he's been writing for decades, is now in his seventies. i think he's amazing...maybe you could give him another chance? if not it's not a biggie ;^) but you're such a reader....
yea, i'm reading that book right now and I kind of get what you're saying. on a literary level, he's no James Joyce. but it really isn't that kind of a book. I believe sincerely that he purposely makes this book a bit easy to read (thus, sacrificing plot/character development and other techniques) in order to make the message easier to comprehend. I find it annoying at times as well, but I think I understand why he does it.
yes i actually see it as very high art form, to be able to communicate in a way that is accessible even to people who aren't great readers, without 'dumbing down'...he subsumed the writer's ego to the work
yeah and sf...like, i love james joyce. but who reads him? something tells me finnegans wake ain't the latest rage among your peers, eh? we're on the brink of a postliterate society. quinn knows that.
Bet that message made you smile. :o)
