I'm almost glad I haven't met him in person. No stupid little words I could muster would come close to encapsulating how I feel about his music. I would end up just looking stupid.
This song is definitely not about his divorce with God. Control was a concept album and it told a story. If you listen closely for everything within that album you can visualize the story pretty well. I find I don't even see Bazan as the main character. Also. I'm agnostic but I do not agree with the bashing of religion and all the slander and whatnot. No one can be sure if God exists or not or what context he exists in. No one should pretend to know. Faith is a good and powerful thing tho
@ruecks I'm with you. I don't even remotely get the divorce with God people are speaking of. And the lyrics kind of contradict the tone of the song. It's really a rather touching and beautiful song. And again, you're also right. Who cares if God is real or not. If the idea of him helps some people get through the day, and sleep at night, that's as real as anyone could ask him to be.
you are correct, control was pre agnostic. who knows though, maybe on a sub conscious level it was foreshadowing something he wasn't ready to face in his psyche... the whole walking barefoot on the beach thing really does have christian god and human communion symbolism in it. it could be applicable to a god divorce also.
It's amazing how this man is just as good (if not better) live, as he is professionally recorded. I think that's an important quality for a really really good musician. Because it's real, it's not fake and digitized like most mainstream music these days.
Christian or Atheist, you must realize how amazing this man is.

I honestly believe that if I got the chance to sit him down and tell him how much I admire him and his music, my life would be complete.

the song is about him and his divorcement with God.
swifferkramer 2 years ago
No, it isn't. Control is a concept album about a nuclear family that falls apart. Besides, he wrote all these songs before becoming an agnostic.

Maybe, but that's unsubstantiated. Who knows, though--maybe David would agree with you.

Why do I sincerely doubt that? Either you learned it wrong, or it isn't the first song you learned.
