  • it looks like a vu meter

  • the sound is coming from the electric motor that drives the read/write arm. right?

  • @benposeno

Yup the sound is coming from the metal of the whole drive but it's generated by the coil that runs the read/write head. Try this and post a video. you will need a dead HDD not a working one.

  • Is that hard drive modified with a speaker inside of it, or is the music coming from the sound made by the read/write head?

  • @DSFanboy360

Hard drive modified to act as a speaker. what you are hearing is the vibration of the read write arm. the voice coil is acting like the voice coil on a speaker so there are no speakers here just the guts of a hard drive.

  • I wonder what the ohms load / frequency response is on this. I'd hate to blow up an amp. The low freqs at 1:30+ look cool!

  • looks like it is working!!!!!lol

  • @TheNascarfan14

Yup its the real thing. I have a better one though and a better camera theres a comment above from me that has 3 videos you can look up to see a better HD speaker.

  • hahah fucking coooooooooool

  • Could you make a tutorial how did you make this? I would be very happy to make myself one.

    Thanks

  • @YoUrEDeStiNy

Basically you just hook wires to the 2 points that run to the voice coil (the part that moves the arm) and then hook the other ends of the wires to your stereo or an amp. use an expendable amp or know what your doing.

  • Put a rod on the "fork" and have it drive a cone or plastic cup, bet it would make much better sound.

  • I made another HD speaker and it sounds way better than this one, check my channel it should be one of my newer videos. I made 3 vids of it using youtube OK songs. look up hard drive speaker playing: johnathan coulton, bad boys main menu theme, the drugs I need. try those 3.

  • Ne... die Festplatte liegt auf einem Lautsprecher... und durch den Bass vibriert der Lesekopf:D Ich habs durchschaut!

  • H0DiNi:

No the voice coil that drives the arm is vibrating and that acts like a speaker. this is pretty cool huh?

Nein, die Schwingspule, dass der Arm-Laufwerke vibriert und die wie ein Sprecher fungiert. this is pretty cool huh?

Please post your comment in english next time or use google's language tools and copy and paste it in here thanks.

  • 5:34 MAX EXCURSION :P

  • I thought yall would like that. I've built another HD speaker that sounds way better than this I should try to max excursion that but I need a beefy amp.

  • haha nice man !

  • What its called when you do this with a viynal record.

  • you cant do this with a vinyl record the arm isnt a speaker its a pickup, but you can do this with things like motors and anything that has a coil and a magnet and uses magnetism to make sound or movement, I did this with the eye assembly to my old digital camera look up "camera eye speaker" on my channel

  • No no no, I mean when they cut the recored up scratch it in sertan parts, put tape over some parts, and other things and when its done and played it has this sort of loop to it most of the time it sounds really good. they made a comecial about it a few years back.

The closeist thing I can comapire it to is circuit bending.

  • i dont know what your taslking about but the closes thing i can think of is a video I saw where someone made a device out of a needle and a small speaker and used that to cut grooves in an old CD and then he played it back and you could hear the recording.

  • Hmmm well ight then.

  • yeah this is your life by switchfoot play it

  • I might try it but i dunno if ill put it on here, actually that would be cool if the band actually wanted me to test that song and they contacted me on youtube i wonder if theres a way to do that.

  • we cant hear bass 20 hz and lower, is that how you know what works best?

  • this could be a great was to test that b/c the lower the bass the more the arm moves.

  • can you do this with the Samus Strut? that has one hell of a deep bass line

  • I can do that as long as that song isnt owned by any major record labels and as long as its not copyrighted

  • its not i assure you good sir :D

  • I hope its not b/c i dont need to lose my account for copyright. BTW do you have a link to this song?

  • check your private messages

  • thanks speeddemon i got the track and i played it and theres hella bass in this one, I just hope its ok on here, but its gonna be filtered thru the hard drive speaker and my camera's audio anyway. I think youtube's copyright software compares the audio in a vid to audio files on file and if they match then they do something but it doesnt look like thats gonna happen here.

  • what the hell crap sound

  • what do you want, its a hard drive and my camera is a pos. if you want to try to make one of these you are more than welcome to try. make a video too if you think you can make a hard drive sound better.

  • if i was you i would take apart a small sub and hook that to the bottom of the cone.

  • 1. I Know How They Hook It Up As A "Speaker" But What About Putting It On a Home Theater Or Something As An Actual "Subwoofer" For The Lows? lol.

    2. Try Akon Ft. Snoop Dogg-I Wanna Love U

  • I would try that akon song but i dont want any copyright issues with music in videos

  • lol 2:39 XD

  • yeah I buzzed it lol

  • haha soul survivor

  • That was incredible!

  • thanks glad you liked it

  • che robba è ?

  • To Ronciu:

English please, or use google's language tools to translate and then copy the englist text to here thanks, or can someone tell me what he said?

  • HD DJ Scratchin'!

  • lol maybe ill do a HD speaker video with some phat ass scratch mix and ill pretend to scratch, i got a friend on here whos a DJ he might be able to hook me up with some tracks to use

  • haha that would be sweet. 2 harddrives and a mixer between them

  • lol maybe ill make one as a gag and take a picture of it and call it a hard drive scratch table or something

  • 3. Bass Testers - Worlds Deepest Bass (Extreme woofer test)

as far as i know the name of that is Dragon Bass

  • i take it you cant actually use it in a comp after this?

  • Actually, the random EMI oscillations magnetically restructure the platter. It should work as good as new or better afterwards!

  • nope this is a one way trip so make sure you use a crappy or non working drive b/c it will be ruined as a hard drive after this, you can only use it as a speaker or a paperweight but there may be other uses but not as a HD

  • No the arm scratches the disk ;)

  • I would like to hear the Bo Diddley Beat on that cutie! :-)#

  • lol not bad. What ohm's is that running at? I'm guessing its pretty low but I've never bothered to test such a thing haha. But heck, it makes sound! :P

  • "it was written" by damian marley has kick ass bass

  • ill have to try that one, put on by kanye west and young jeezy has killer bass

  • hell yea it does

  • DAMN that hard drive bumps LOL

  • well its gonna bump more when i hook it to my tube amp

  • lmao GET LOW lmao

  • hey how does that do on my test?

  • Way to be pumping that Quad and making that arm WORK! Glad I checked it XD

  • hey is the hd giving out sound or just the hds arm moves ????

  • what you hear in this video is being made by the hard drive arm vibrating across the platter so yes the hard drive is making sound

  • heres a good bass song it is white girl by young jeezy

  • how do u do that i just opened up my hard drive so please either message me on youtube or i will give u my e-mail thx

  • ok you got the drive opened look on the back under the circuit board youll see a set of commectors get an audio sourcs like your stereo and start touching the speaker wires to some of the points (use an expendable stereo or know what your doing) touch only 1 set at a time make sure your wires are neatly twisted together when you tough a set of points and you hear music you have the right ones mark them and then solder your wires to these 2 points hope this helped

  • i dont have speaker wires i just want to use red and white audio cables and hook it up to my little insignia stereo (see v-rocker vid)

  • well your gonna have to use speaker wire and then you can hook it to your system, this is 1 speaker mono you cant hook a stereo signal to a mono speaker unless you use 2 HD speakers

  • i got an old hd somewhere and might try making one of these.

But, does it really get good bass?

  • its not the best bass but you can see the effect of the bass on the arm but ive only done it to see the effects of the bass in different songs and to make a video if it has alot of movement

  • Wow... What a waste of a hard drive... Just kidding. I would kill to put that in my car.

  • lol well if you can make a hard drive speaker hell make 2 of em and put them in your car haha id kinda like to see that happen can you do that and get it on video and send it to me on here

  • As soon as I get 2 dead hard drives. I am going to make them tweeters for my car stereo (lol).

  • Go for it id like to see that can you post a video of it, you should post it as a response to this video

  • Play "Bass I Love You" That would work.

  • search for bigbas on here, it has some nice bass.

  • Beats 4 my van

is a good song for bass

  • its by:DJ Billy-E

  • i like that song, it was featured in the MTV show pimp my ride when that dude got the MTX jackhammer

  • beats for my van by dj billy E

  • lmao i wanna do tat wwith one of my harddrives lol

  • go for it just use a dead HD as long as the arm still works

  • hhahaha ::D:D::D nice :D

  • xD favorited

  • thanks and I like your username im a huge fan of the GTA games

  • thanks :D

  • what do you expect, its a hard drive not a bose speaker

  • Hypertech Head reader and Writer

  • SY1WEK whats that? what you say? please explain more.

  • Im just saying the head reader on the har drive is on crack...

  • hahahahaha im playing music thru it, and i got a model car engine thats possessed look up possessed car engine on here

  • OMFG look at 2:43

  • run a laser on that with a mirror

  • just get a good sine wave single tone (conciderable length) and doo a pitch bend on it. and vwala there is your sinesweep

  • i can make one in audacity but do i make it 1hz then do the pitch bend or whats a good starting frequency, acyually if i had a synthisizer that could record like from a mic and then i can sample the tone and then play it back at different frequencies

  • I wonder how it would sound with the disk actually spinning

  • it would squeak and screech due to the heads dragging on the disk

  • try there it go by santana

the whole song is prettymuch bass, even more then get low and soul survivor

  • oh you mean Julez santana yeah i got that song i might do it in another vid, but then theres the (c) issue, one of my youtube friends accounts was deleted for something stupid.

  • N.W.A.'s Fuck the police may not have continuious bass, but i imagine if you were to play it this way it would at least look cool

  • cool did you get it on video? put it on youtube

  • hahah(why arent you using real bass test 1mhz - 200mhz?)

you cant hear mega hertz only up mabe 15-16 khz

    your talking about a 1hz or 1hertz - 200hz or 200hertz sine wave sweep

  • well send me a file i can use b/c i dont have a sine wave generator

  • audacity has a sine wave cenerator but no easy way to generate the sweep im looking for b/c it sucks

  • i pulled the green cuircuit board guess what i found inside......CAPACITORS no wires from vc to board

  • ive never seen that can you post a pic of it on like photobucket and send me a link or make a vid of this and put it on here

  • why arent you using real bass test 1mhz - 200mhz?

  • send me that track and ill do another video or send me a link to where i can download that track

  • Looks like a robot dj LOL!

  • ... then again.. ur just doing bass..

  • dude, that hdd is fried. lol... it doesn't sound very good.

  • I'll have to go try that out. I've also seen versions that use cut up headphones. Thanks

  • i hate using cut up headphones, to me its not professional looking i have scrap wire from shit i rip apart I just used that on my HD speaker, now i just use jumpers to hook it up to my car stereo, but hopefully soon im gonna hook this thing up to my vintage tube amp and ill pump 10 watts of tube power thru this HD speaker

  • If possible I would like to see a video of "Heavy Metal" done on your hard drive speaker. Also can you help me with mine? I've got a hard drive all taken apart but I don't know where to attach the speaker wires.

  • did you remove the green circuit board? after youve done that youll see to sets of connectors one set near the motor these you dont need but the other set away from the motor youll see like 10 or so pins, play some music on your amp/stereo and start touching points on the connectors BUT DONT TOUCH THE WIRES TOGETHER OR IT WILL BLOW YOUR AMP!! when you hear music coming from the drive then you have found the points you need solder the speaker wires to those 2 points

  • Contd.

do you know how to solder? I reccomend soldering rather than taping b/c they will fall of if you dont, also if you secure the wires by threading them thrui the drive mounting holes it will last much longer

  • You should try some "Slam" by Pendulum, or if you want overkill, look for "Heavy Metal" on the 6th session by Dieselboy. You will not be disappointed.

  • ill try those, this isnt the first time ive heard new music via ppl saying on here that i should try this song on it, in fact thats how i found out about the song evil by interpol

  • If you want to generate a signal download audacity, it's free and can be used to generate tones at different frequencies.

  • Id rather play music, better than test tones

  • but you said "I don't have an ocilloscope or sound generators" I was just suggesting a sound generator

  • i know, thanks for the idea, if i still had my music keyboard i can use that

  • how the hell did you do that ? :O amazing

  • what wires did u use 2 make this?

  • read the other comments, its basically the 2 connectors that go to the voice coil

  • what song is playing at 5:35?

  • all the songs are in the description

  • Like trance?? Go watch my video and tell me what you think by leaving a comment!!!

  • i put the 2 wires on the read/write arm but it smoked up!

  • wrong place, you need to put them on the end connector points that are under the green circuit board, remove the circuit board and im pretty sure its the end 2 points nearest the mounting rail, where you mount the drive in a pc

  • it did work for like 2 secs but it is a laptop hdd and the voice coil is under the magnet and the magene is soldered on

  • just follow the tracks from the voice coil and find out where they end they should end on a set of contact that the green circuit board connects to, solder your wires to that, ive seen many people that have HD speaker vids on here and they attach the wires to the 2 points on the drive arm, dont do this unless you want to keep fixing it, solder the wires on the above mentioned 2 points, try them all until you hear music but never touch the 2 wires together of it'll blow your amp

  • oh,by the way if you find a youtube account named HouseholdHacker none of his hacks work.

  • yeah ive seen that user, his hacks are total bullshit like the charge an ipod with powerade and an onion, total bullshit waste of a youtube account right there

  • yeah, make a speaker with a PENNY???

  • u can do the same with a motor its funny as hell

  • ive done that its wierd, if you put your ear near the motor the aidio sounds all bassy

  • read the other comments on here how do do this is in there also try google, google hard drive speaker

  • wtf

  • Sasha that is a computer hard drive that normally stores files and programs but ive hacked it into a speaker by hooking 2 wires to the points that run to the voice coil

  • your a fucking genious, how the fawk did you know it was audiable!?

  • thanks, I was surfing youtube looking at all the hard drive speaker videos and i was thinkin i wanna try that so i got hacking, i took this old drive from my moms old obsolete PC and i hacked the drive open, took off the circuit board and started touching wires to the points on the back and sure enough i hit the end two points and I heard music, i was like sweet so I soldered them to those 2 points and now i have a hard drive speaker

  • u can do it with motors too

    :D

  • FYI, the "speaker" has an impedance of 10 ohms, although this may vary with different hard drives

  • yo how did u connect drive? through what cables? i wanna do tha same.

  • read the other comments ts in there

  • amazing m8 cool

  • Wow thanks alot... u just made me CLICK ! since i have my 2000watts sub beside my pc box my hard drive fried 2 twice already !!! I LOVE UTUBE !!! thnx

  • your sub may be causing you HD to fry try placing it further away from the tower

  • LOL i have the same seagate-speaker %)

  • u should try to use the hard drive as a normal hard drive again.........lmao!

  • YEah i dont think that will work but good thought lol

  • hit the disc a spin man!!! lol

this is just pure idleness... so too is digging around in youtube lol

    good stuff man

  • im glad you liked it, i could give the disk a spin like a DJ scratch yeah ::air DJ cuttin scratchin:: yeah that might look cool ill try it with a song that has scratching in it got any good ideas on songs?

  • thats some harddrive recording haha

  • its music playing thru it like its a speaker

  • yea i know. i´ve done that with an engine from a rc car :D

  • it works with DC motors too but it doesnt sound as good, I tried this with a stepper motor from an old printer and it didnt work very good

  • yeah its pretty cool hahaha

  • yea :D

  • how the fuk

  • NOTE THAT louder Music WILL make it hotter

  • its up as loud as it will go without it sounding bad and possibly blowing my stereo

  • wowisttot please speak englist im english speaking only thanks

  • why does the kind of music matter its the fact he got a hard drive to perfrom as a speaker

  • \Lil Jon & The Eastside Boys Feat. Ying Yang Twins - Get Low

    that's REAL music dude ;>

  • mainstream music sucks ass.. its all about dat local underground shit id people want music dat SLAPS download Husalah and Mob Figaz.... black out, sallys, slap in the trunk, my 15th birthday.... u havent heard bass till u listen 2 dat shit

  • point me to some of this music, links on the net a myspace page or mp3s on seeqpod

  • theres a new note book out there, macbook AIR, the worlds thinnest notebook, EVER.(half the size of the xps 1330)

  • NOT

The laptop from 1997 by Mitsubishi and HP collaboration named the Pedion (did not sell well)

    is thinest EVER

  • how big was it? smaller then .76 inches at its thikest point? did it have a dual core cpu? did it have a hard drive?

  • it was 0.7244 inch thick making it a little thinner, and it did have a hard drive, not dual core (remember it's 1997)

  • oh, well, i figured it was old, but really, this is much better. was it like the old powerbooks that had docks for disk drives, hard drives, and gpus and stuff?

  • iono what it was but I was just proving that guy wrong when he said it is the thinnest ever

  • cool.

  • K so u opened a harddrive, u ran windows and u played some music, this is no proof whatsoever.

  • i dont run windows on this drive although it came from a windows 95 based PC its just my ipod my car stereo and this HD speaker

  • 3:34 is funny

  • yeah it bottomed out and bounced now i use a pice of elec. tape to restrict the arm like a speaker's spider cloth i dunno if you ever took apart a blown speaker or saw one being made search how it's made loudspeaker on youtube and that orange cloth thing near the coil is the spider cloth
