Government meddling with the economy started under Hoover, and it was only W2 which ended the depression. All the unconstitutional government intrusion into the market-place did was prolong the Depression. Unemployment was almost 20% 6 years into FDR's New Deal, a host of measures he implemented were struck down as unconstitutional, and he tried to push an amendment to increase the number of judges on the Supreme Court so he could pack it with HIS judges.
Some economic schools of thought (Austrian school) have figured that without the intrusions by Hoover (and afterward, FDR) to do something about the symptoms of the downturned ecomony, the Great Depression would have simply been a recession that ended in 1931.
the New Deal was an abysmal failure. almost all of today's economists agree that FDR prolonged the Great Depression by at least 7 years. the New Deal failed because it interfered with the natural market forces that wou'd've corrected themselves sooner than later. for every government job that was created, more were lost in the private sector, which were the only jobs that could've revived the economy.
today, Obama is taking us down the same path that FDR took in 1933. also, for the record, FDR was not a good president. he was an aspiring dictator who ruled for longer than what was gentlemanly (4 terms) and tried to circumvent the Constitution by packing the Supreme Court with Democrats (1937 Judiciary Reorganization Bill). he was a communist sympathizer who cozied up with Stalin and allowed the Soviets to take East Berlin.

The resulting post-war boom was due to the foundations that had been set prior to the war and into the conflict. America's success was due to more than a "pro-business" attitude -- after all, taxation rates for the top income earner was at 91% during the Eisenhower years. And remember the federally funded GI bill that educated millions of vets?

Also, I didn't conveniently ignore anything, because foreign or domestic demand -- imports of export -- is irrelevant to the discussion. In both cases, the New Deal programs and the WWII industrial war effort was supported by an influx of federal dollars, which resulted in millions of domestic jobs for Americans.
World War Two didnt get us out of the depression because it started coming back as soon as the war was over. What got us out of the depression was Harry Truman flushing the New Deal down the toilet

New deal absolutely got you out of the depression as it created economic activity and demand. unemployment was slashed dramaticly in 2-3 years. I'd say that's impressive - unless you expect everything to change in a few months.
Hip replacement is not a critical procedure and thus is not highly prioritized. It does effect quality of life, but at least nobody goes bankrupt in our socialist healthcare system or use the emergency room as a first health care unit. continued...

There are many books written about the subject, I have studied both sides of the argument, you should study the other side of the issue.

While poorly implemented in the United States, the idea of graduated taxation is that those who have benefited from what the community has given them (education, infrastructure, security, health care, etc.) should share with the community to enhance the quality of life for everyone. To say it punishes the wealthy is to suggest that all wealth is accumulated without any of the aforementioned services rendered by the community and that those who are wealthy owe nothing to the people around them.
You are exactly right, the people who have wealth DO owe NOTHING to the people around them. If those without wealth wish to have it, they should have to earn it, just like the wealthy do.
There's no such thing as a free market as every trade requires a justice system to oversee the trade, an education system to make sure the trade is understood, a healthcare system to make sure the traders can trade, a civil infrastructure for the trade to take place, and a defender of the system altogether. Hence progressivism works for society by redistributing back to the community. Democrats did not "support" fascism any more than republicans supported corrupt contra governments.

Republicans were for emancipation in the 19th century. In the 20th century they fought civil rights all the way. They also fought child labor laws, the 40-hour work week, unions, social security, environmental safety laws, individual rights, privacy rights, etc.

The problem with civil rights is the belief that the government can solve it. Government can't legislate morals or equality. What we need is true freedom. The freedom to buy our own healhcare. The freedom to freely treat people as our own equals and to give everyone their fair shake. Not big government.
That is exactly what the conservatives have been doing over the last 15 years.

Umm, before the government began passing civil rights bills in this country, black people were hardly getting a "fair shake". Discrimination in everything from voting to schools to diners to hospitals, etc. That legislation was needed to correct the evils of segregation and sanctioned discrimination.
you can't just show pictures of things and say that you are pro-them. for all we know, pro-national park could mean pro-commercialising national parks and putting advertisments on Old Faithful.

During the 60s, who do you think was going into the South, risking their lives, signing up voters, and teaching blacks how to pass the so-called "literacy" tests? The civil rights leaders in the black community were progressives as well.
It was the conservatives, especially many Dixiecrats, who opposed the civil rights movement.

American progressives EXPANDED voting rights -- look at the 17th amendment, for an example, which came out of the primary election system in Wisconsin, whose progressive reforms (known as the Wisconsin Idea -- look it up) was expanding direct democracy.
Ironically, modern conservatives want to REPEAL the 17th amendment.
Progressives expanded the vote for women and they championed mass action in the civil rights movement.

Government meddling with the economy started under Hoover, and it was only W2 which ended the depression. All the unconstitutional government intrusion into the market-place did was prolong the Depression. Unemployment was almost 20% 6 years into FDR's New Deal, a host of measures he implemented were struck down as unconstitutional, and he tried to push an amendment to increase the number of judges on the Supreme Court so he could pack it with HIS judges.

the New Deal was an abysmal failure. almost all of today's economists agree that FDR prolonged the Great Depression by at least 7 years. the New Deal failed because it interfered with the natural market forces that wou'd've corrected themselves sooner than later. for every government job that was created, more were lost in the private sector, which were the only jobs that could've revived the economy.

Being for state programs aren't enough, since many "anti-state" Republicans, supposedly "non-progressive," are pro-state in some sectors.
There aren't that many true libertarian Republicans. minarchists, or conservatives, for that matter.
There ARE liberal or progressive Republicans, but they are few and far between.

Basically a libertarian-conservative fusion took place from the 30s to 60s. Neo-cons are expansionist statists with some conservative views, which arose after the 60s and first came to dominance in the Reagan administration.

Many statists support the military-industrial complex and Big Business, both of which have been opposed by the progressives since the late 1800s and into WWI. In essence, your point was self-defeating, because you are arguing against government interaction while holding up America's industrial WW2 program as being a balm for America's economic woes after 1929, especially since FDR was President during both times.

The resulting post-war boom was due to the foundations that had been set prior to the war and into the conflict. America's success was due to more than a "pro-business" attitude -- after all, taxation rates for the top income earner was at 91% during the Eisenhower years. And remember the federally funded GI bill that educated millions of vets?

Also, I didn't conveniently ignore anything, because foreign or domestic demand -- imports of export -- is irrelevant to the discussion. In both cases, the New Deal programs and the WWII industrial war effort was supported by an influx of federal dollars, which resulted in millions of domestic jobs for Americans.

New deal absolutely got you out of the depression as it created economic activity and demand. unemployment was slashed dramaticly in 2-3 years. I'd say that's impressive - unless you expect everything to change in a few months.
Hip replacement is not a critical procedure and thus is not highly prioritized. It does effect quality of life, but at least nobody goes bankrupt in our socialist healthcare system or use the emergency room as a first health care unit. continued...

It only turned around after Roosevelt left office and they lowered the taxes. You have your facts wrong. The idea that the New Deal got us out of the depression is a myth. There are many books written about the subject, I have studied both sides of the argument, you should study the other side of the issue.

To say it punishes the wealthy is to suggest that all wealth is accumulated without any of the aforementioned services rendered by the community and that those who are wealthy owe nothing to the people around them.

There's no such thing as a free market as every trade requires a justice system to oversee the trade, an education system to make sure the trade is understood, a healthcare system to make sure the traders can trade, a civil infrastructure for the trade to take place, and a defender of the system altogether. Hence progressivism works for society by redistributing back to the community. Democrats did not "support" fascism any more than republicans supported corrupt contra governments.

Susan B Anthony died in 1906 suffrage wasn't granted until the 19th amendment in 1920.

America needs to move ahead.
Healthcare the biggest drain on our economy and productivity. But the attack on the rule of law by the bush/Cheney crowd is also a deadly threat.
This add requires a lot of background education from the passive viewer. If our education system continues to fall apart, adds like this will become even more irrelevant.

- gives historical context
- finally we say what we're for! this matters more than what we're against
MAJOR flaws in this ad:
- Doesn't differentiate from Progressive Auto insurance
- Looks like other TV ads, very generic art direction; needs distinct but accessible style to stand out from commodity products or services. Convey urgency; needs to state the time is NOW!
- Doesn't mention free public education

Republicans were for emancipation in the 19th century. In the 20th century they fought civil rights all the way. They also fought child labor laws, the 40-hour work week, unions, social security, environmental safety laws, individual rights, privacy rights, etc.

AND when Nixon Adm developed Southern Strategy in '68 exploiting white fear of black's having total equal access. Paint a socialist law with all the red/white/blue you want. It's still a socialist law. When you create a law, you also create criminals because laws will be broken. Help an illigal with a job = go to jail. Lend your car to an unlicensed driver to work who then kills someone = go to jail. I vomited with rage while watching this video. The underlying themes in this video are socialism and communism. Giving healthcare for all is a failed policy. The problem with civil rights is the belief that the government can solve it. Government can't legislate morals or equality. What we need is true freedom. The freedom to buy our own healhcare. The freedom to freely treat people as our own equals and to give everyone their fair shake. Not big government.

Jim- My post did I say I don't support the Constitution, infact, I support it, unlike the Neocons in office. I don't have a prob being taxed, as long as its fair, & is used for the Gov't needs. What I don't like are taxes being given out to Corporations. I believe Gov't should work smarter, not harder. The prob with present day conservatism is, whats being sold as conservatism, is not. The Bush admin., has moved so far right, a true conservative today looks like a left leaning Republican.

Umm, before the government began passing civil rights bills in this country, black people were hardly getting a "fair shake". Discrimination in everything from voting to schools to diners to hospitals, etc. That legislation was needed to correct the evils of segregation and sanctioned discrimination.
