This is so cool. Man, whatever they want to believe is fine by them. I am an atheist, but I don't hate people who believe in God. It's just that I don't. No one should be able to dictate who or what you believe in.
I read in NatGeo that when the leaders were asked that since it's been decades and John has not returned, why do they still believe? Isaac Wan replied that it's been over 2,000 years and "Christianers" are still waiting! I see the comparison quite clearly. Let them believe just as Christians are allowed to believe. Who is to say that one belief is stronger, better or more valid than the other. Our monotheistic religions think this is ludicrous. The people of Tanna just laugh at us!
its been like theyre religion for years how would you like it if everyone was laughing and mocking your god would you keep believing like these people and if your an atheist jump off a bridge plz
I'm converting. John Frum, PBUH (peace be upon him), will save me. Just wait. I'll laugh and you'll all burn when it happens! Also, John Frum promised me 100 virgins more than how ever many your god promised you!!!!
all religions must have started some way we cannot even imagined, even mundane stuff, perhaps witnessing something natural, but impossible for the ancients to explain. Anyway, this is a perfect example of how easily a new religion is born- Fascinating! but i can't help but feel sad about these people who expect john to return though he probably died in the war.
I can imagine when a christian priester will tell these ppl that he believes in the resurection of christ and he was born of a virgine and that he is the living god and actually there are 3 gods in 1 god or mohamad went to the 7sky or moses talked to the burning bush
these ppl will laugh at him and say what is wrong with the white ppl so let us stop laughing at them
it is time to laugh at our selves are we all not a little bit john frum
You find a couple of fiscal facts on the internet, bandy around the term 'banana republic' and try and pass yourself off as an expert. My view of reality is warped you say, get a grip sunshine.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
you throw around a bunch of words to distract people from seeing the fact that youve already discovered that youve lost this argument yet you continue to mix sparse bits of truth with the truth of the matter do everyone a favor and step out in front of a train just cause you know youre wrong but continue to campaign as though youve been right all along doesnt make you an expert either, it makes you a desperate jackass better yet, ram a stick of dynamite up your ass you can hold it with yer mouth
'Throw around a bunch of words'? I'm somehow at fault for using words? What about what I say do you disagree with, apart from my using words? Forgive me, but you seem to use a few yourself, jackass.
As I said originally - prompting your ignorant objection which you have consistently failed to substantially back up or explain - by ostensibly worshipping some of the outward signs of western culture they have succesfully inculcated themselves from its pernicous influence, such steps are only necessary because of the inevitable contact both economic and social with the western world.
Their culture persists in spite of this contact. In spite of their apparent poverty they are according to the happy planet index the happiest people in the world.
This is admittedly a rather spurious accolade, still they seem a joyous people and there is a great deal of admittedly anecdotal evidence to support this. The reports of people who have been there may be anecdotal but I'd suggest their having been there makes there testimony more interesting than yours hutchins.
These beliefs might appear ridiculous to you but my ostensibly worshipping its outward signs they have succesfully inculcated themselves from the pernicous influence of Western culture. Good luck to them.
how so? is, perhaps, a reasonable question. However, I would suggesdt waiting for the reply before commenting that its the 'most ridiculous statement you ever heard'. Quite simply the cargo cult proscribes the adoption of a western lifestyle. Yes, its that simple, a little like you.
interesting. Vanuatu is a tax haven for western bankers, the primary languages are english and french, 50 percent of their economy is based on tourism. sounds like they're failing at keeping that "western lifestyle" at bay huh?
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
nothing, I think its beautiful how all foreign european colonies "share" their culture and natural resources with the west. Its not like they RELY on the tourism to keep their economies afloat, they just want to "share". LMFAO
They are sharing irrespective of whether their wanting to do so is motivated by profit or 'pure' benevolence. They are quite clearly not the most materialist people in the world, however everyone has material needs. What exactly are you objecting to?
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I"m objecting to your warped view of reality. They are simply another banana republic that has no choice but to rake in western dollars to survive, and like most banana republics tourism is part of the deal. You try and paint it out like this ceremony and worship shields them from it, when in fact they are slaves to it.
I can imagine that when a christian priester goes there and tells the cargo cult believer that he believes in resuruction of jesus christ and he has waited since 2000 years and nothing has happened yet and that there are 3 gods in one god-trinity and so on
these cargo cult believers will laugh at him and be surprised and say what is wrong with these white ppl how can a somber mind believe in such things
but are both of these stories not amazing to the the laughing 3rd party
For sure! Its funny how this is the perfect example of how religions form, whether made up or just happened spontaneously. Very good point though, both stories are just as much bullshit as any other that requires faith as a prerequisite.
I really like the pogo dance at the end. I would like to travel there and experience a Hunter S Thompson style psych binge off of whatever local intoxicants I can get my hands on. Oh yes...and cargo. I'd bring some cargo too.
i first heard about this cult from the book The God Delusion. there is a great anecdote from the god delusion about an explorer in the 50's who visited the island. he asked one of the cult member(i'm paraphrasing btw)"you've waited 19 years for John to return, it that sort of ridicules?" to which the islander replied "but you've been waiting 2000 years for jesus to return, which one of us is more ridiculous."
But truth isnt all black and white, maybe these people are protesting that we should share the wealth with them, or stop hurting the environment. Its a matter of interpretation.
Maybe I am being totally sarcastic. That is also a matter of interpretation.
This is so cool. Man, whatever they want to believe is fine by them. I am an atheist, but I don't hate people who believe in God. It's just that I don't. No one should be able to dictate who or what you believe in.
