Mark's command of the saxophone is impressive...but he is fun to listen too as he patiently tells HIS story. Music is way beyond like and dislike...i remember starting in listening to jazz....i just tried to notice what was going on without any judgement or questions like ...do i like this or not. the longer i suspend judgment the more i learn
This is so intense, these cats are playing with so much breathing, space and control...the sound of the room and camera doesn't seem that good... this is mastery.
P, Mark Turner's tone is not my favorite, BUT his textures, patience and development of solos based on shapes and colors are a demonstration of artistic mastery. He only sounds like himself-he's really reaching inward, and there is a WHOLE lot to be said for that. Binney has always been a God for me too for the same reasons, but beautiful in every musical way for my ears.
When Coltrane started doing his thing people would criticize him for being anti-jazz. He was killing swing and now you guys are doing the same towards Mark Turner???? 50 years from now someone will be criticizing another guy and saying we have to preserve the good old players like Turner.... get what I'm saying????
Oh and to the guy who's asking if Mark Turner is black or white...why should that matter???? Haven't we evolved past that? I hope so. His music is great regardless of his race or color. He's a great sax player and this is where the music has evolved towards. We have to start from the older Jazz of course, it's the foundation, but we have to evolve as well otherwise I'd argue for Mozart and how bebop killed classical music. Pointless arguments it's in our nature to explore and evolve.
This guys are doing their thing, if you like it you like it and if you don't you don't that's it. This world is populated with over 6 billion people and all with individual tastes some like Kenny G some like Mark Turner, personally I prefer Mark Turner and guess what I grew up on Coltrane, Rollins, Getz but as I grew musically I also learned to appreciate this kind of Jazz so just because you don't understand it does not mean it's bad, you just have to educate yourself a bit more.
well sir....how can you assume that I'm not a musican? Anyway...I'm a drummer and it's just my opinion. Just because they're good musicians doesn't mean they're on fire every night of the week. Just because he 's well known doesn't mean Mr. Turner can heal the sick and raise the dead.
wow mark turner is brilliant, i was listening to the beginning of his solo and thought it was weird but as he developed his solo, it dawned on me that his approach on music explores a whole new level of improv
This is why recording like "kind of blue still remains top...youngsters can understand it...therefore bringing them closer to jazz. If we don't perserve it in our youngsters ...all of us lose. This is were Miles went wrong...he had jazz in his hand and threw it down because he didn't care about it's future. We can no longer play for ourselves
Why...it's apparent that these are great musicians. What's problematic is that today's jazz needs an educational protocol that helps bring our youth to jazz. They can't relate to compositions as such because they are bombarded by media and radio
how can you say this is terrible jazz? these musicians are some of the best in the world. maybe if you were a musician yourself you would realize how good david binney's music is
It's great to hear Turner using multi-phonics in a Jazz solo ON PURPOSE. All of the honking and squeaking he uses build strange structured chords over the changes. Also this is a very good representation of free-jazz/avant-garde. It usually takes a little cultivation in jazz to understand but it's definitely not for the leisure listener. Personally I liked it.But, to each his/her own right?
This guy is just another idiotic basement saxophonist who's so insecure about his shitty playing that the only thing he can do is spend his time beating off to animal porn and making disparaging comments about great saxophone players on youtube. Get a life!
Mark is featured on Enrico Rava's "New York Days" (ECM 2009) and his collective Fly's new release "Sky and Country" with Larry Grenadier and Jeff Ballard, a rhythm section you may know from their work with Brad Mehldau. Fly's recording is also from ECM 2009. The lovliest tune is from Enrico's release entitled "Thank You, Come Again." Lucas, you will like "Thank You . . . "
As you have nothing to back-up your own playing, you can't really say anything about these guys. And even if you did, there's a pretty good a chance you wouldn't be even close to either Mark's or David's level. Are you familiar with improvising out of changes/time? this is a pretty good example.
These guys are really playing together!
