@Tengent I'm pretty sure they're Tabla but I could be wrong. That's what I've always assumed they were. You get that kinda water drop sound from the really low ones.

Well yeah he started developing and using the mandalas during the Lateralus tour, but in the studio recording of Reflection and most of their other songs he uses separate percussion items. On Reflection they're tabla.

He does use Mandala pads. In fact, I think he was one of the creative forces behind the product.

it's one of his mandala pads triggering the sound from a tympani, which is a drum that has a pedal that changes the tension of the head, he dosent actually have one up there though,

Danny's worked with some big company to develop an instrument called a mandala. Basically, it's a huge hexagonal shaped velocity sensitive electronic pad. Different parts of the pad can be programmed to play different sounds and different pitches...in Tool he almost always uses them for the sound of the "tabla", an Indian instrument, like a bongo. It's usually played with the palms, but the computer near his set for the mandalas take care of the sounds :).

@hooksandbullets Many drummers will change the pitches on their drums in different songs throughout a show. I'm not sure if Danny does or not, I've never been to a show where I was tripping face so I don't really watch for it or even attempt to listen for it, but it's definitely possible.

Don't do that man. I'm not a messugah fan. But I think when you listen to tool you shouldn't listen to one individual part. When the music leaves those speakers your not hearing four guys playing. You are hearing tool, a complete seperate entity on it's own. It's like finding out how a magician does his tricks. Best not ruin the illusion.
