love this song ... remember seeing them live touring the lateralus album and remember the video thats being played in the background. Always wanted to get my hands on a copy of the vids they play during their shows. Amazing stuff!
tool is awesome.anyone involved with making music.or has an appreciation for music will agree.they are true blue musicians.unbelievable content.so well performed.if you ever get the oppurtunity .see them live.AMAZING!!!!
hes playin a guitar called a steinbrehner , not sure if thats the spelling they were popular in the 80's , pretty kool guitars look weird because they have no headstock and give weird sounds
What is Maynard playing? I never knew he did any on stage instruments besides vocals. I love this song, i would enjoy one of their shows so much... oh man.
@Tengent I'm pretty sure they're Tabla but I could be wrong. That's what I've always assumed they were. You get that kinda water drop sound from the really low ones.
Well yeah he started developing and using the mandalas during the Lateralus tour, but in the studio recording of Reflection and most of their other songs he uses separate percussion items. On Reflection they're tabla.
it's one of his mandala pads triggering the sound from a tympani, which is a drum that has a pedal that changes the tension of the head, he dosent actually have one up there though,
Danny's worked with some big company to develop an instrument called a mandala. Basically, it's a huge hexagonal shaped velocity sensitive electronic pad. Different parts of the pad can be programmed to play different sounds and different pitches...in Tool he almost always uses them for the sound of the "tabla", an Indian instrument, like a bongo. It's usually played with the palms, but the computer near his set for the mandalas take care of the sounds :).
its interesting to see how many tunings that daney carey plays this song in, and in turn they all have a different impact on your subconcious mind, Masterpeice of musicianship.
@hooksandbullets Many drummers will change the pitches on their drums in different songs throughout a show. I'm not sure if Danny does or not, I've never been to a show where I was tripping face so I don't really watch for it or even attempt to listen for it, but it's definitely possible.
@rtee147 I agree. Tool and Meshuggah are both rythmically and melodically experimental, but their way of creating and playing music are completely different. I think there is actually very little the two bands have in common.
Get yourself a book called "The keys of Enoch" You might pay a fair bit for it but if you are getting a tat of it you might want to know what your putting on yourself.
"Danny Carey, the drummer from the progressive rock band Tool, features the unicursal hexagram in some of his imagery, and configures his drum kit in this arrangement as well."
You might've already known that but thats pretty cool isn't it!
Don't do that man. I'm not a messugah fan. But I think when you listen to tool you shouldn't listen to one individual part. When the music leaves those speakers your not hearing four guys playing. You are hearing tool, a complete seperate entity on it's own. It's like finding out how a magician does his tricks. Best not ruin the illusion.
For a person to say the word FAIL is absolutely ridiculous. Your obviously not getting the message that this song possesses. This song is unbelieveable to say the fuckin least. Some of the best lyrics ever written by ANY band, hands down. If you disagree, I feel pity for your soul.

I must be tripping balls here but is that Zach De la rocha playing bass? i mean he has dreads....idk fade this post if im wrong but Tool makes me Jizz every time i listen to this song!!!!rock on TOOL!!!Woot!!!

you know something mate, i've done this the last few weekends and you're damn right. people who don't do it give out about it. but the people that do know how good they are. try listen to pink floyds high hopes aswell. does the same thing.
Adam is playing the his virus synth with his feet, that's why you see his right leg going side to side through out the song Maynard is just playing some bass while singing.
If you insist im not gonna say anything else cause you think you're right so there will be no point. Just really research it, open your ears and pay more attention cause trust me im right.
best live performance of this song ever.
