To get fruit on the table, stand directly in front of the table, drop a tool onto the floor and then try to drop a piece of fruit. It should hop up onto the table instead. You can do this other items that you normally can't put onto tables like paper, tools, and turnips. If you put turnips onto tables, they will never rot.
