Not a trolling question, but are you allowed to filter even though you have a solid white line? I thought it was no overtaking for solid white line. Does this just mean, 'do not cross white line' so filtering in same lane is legal?
I'm interested to know why you didn't want to cross the solid line. I thought you could if the traffic was moving less than 10mph, there were also plenty of gaps where you could have got back in if need be.
@kaioxygen - Thank is a good observation......Highway Code Rule 129: You may cross the line if necessary, provided the road is clear, to pass a stationary vehicle, or overtake a pedal cycle, horse or road maintenance vehicle, if they are travelling at 10 mph (16 km/h) or less. (Have a look at the wording, does not include all vehicles. Road maintenance - Gully emptiers, Hedge Cutters etc.....)
Filtering is a special case of overtaking. Filtering means overtaking a vehicle on the left while there are vehicles on the right travelling the in same direction as you. This video only shows normal overtakes. It isn't filtering.
i felt anxious watching this footage he saved 5mins on his journey(big deal... not) but put his life in danger by moving into the on comming traffic lane. Sure i have wanted to advance in slow traffic on my bike but chose the safer option of waiting it out with the rest of the traffic.
Yet another brilliant video from nigel, long time no talk, I've just been out now and again due to freezing weather.off down the A5 tommorow to ponderosa!! me and the friend just got comms.
I have already been up the Ponderosa several times already this year, not on the motorcycle - I am doing Blue light training with ambulance crews.....
I guess I don't understand the justification for some of this filtering. Obviously cars could do this same filtering and next thing you know you have kaos. As you are filtering a car could jump out to do some filtering as well and knock you down. Is this not rude and more proper behaviour would be to wait your turn as everybody else is having to do?
Thats one of the advantages of riding motorcycles, we can safely nip back in while a car cant, I think jorkjica you are one of those who closes gaps so motorcycles cant get past, while your sitting comfy we are in the rain and cold and very vonruble to traffic, you cant have it both ways
No, i'm not one of the ones who closes gaps. I'm on one of my bikes waiting my turn just like everybody else has to. I'm also one of those car drivers who, carelessly yes, might be tuning his radio or doing some stupid thing on my cell phone and weave a bit and that could hurt a biker nipping in at the wrong time. These careless car drivers, being one, are my major worry when I'm on my bikes; they are a reality. It isn't always raining and cold. Its just plain cutting in line, just plain rude.
I would agree its cutting in line, if the person doing it actually delayed you in your journey, but a motorcycle isnt a car. its not how many people are in front of you that delays your journey, but how much space is taken up, and providing the bikes keep moving, its fine.
its nothing more than making progress without causing any problems or inconvenience for anyone else using the road. The same bike that filters past you might have held back and let a truck pull out for a hard-work overtake a few minutes back. 99% of car/bus/truck/bike drivers/riders are just regular people going about (or going to or from work) their work. , We are all on the same side. Most car drivers are considerate to bikes, and vice versa. We all just fit in where we can.
Bravo, think I would have moved in a little closer to the centre of your lane when you were behind the trailor to make yourself more visible to oncoming should they try to over take and dont see you because your nearly on the white line, lovely smooth and controlled filtering, 5s
My apologies, the audio lead connected to the passenger lead of the autocom failed. I do all my editing with Pinnacle 9. The audio dubbing is just a cheap headset off E bay connected to the computer. It seems to work..
great vid...i dont think there was anything wrong with your positioning, i think the camera makes things look closer than they are but im sure you would not be in that position if it wasn't safe for you or other road users
I didn't say I thought Nigels position was wrong, just not the best. I don't claim to be anywhere near as good a motorcyclist which was why I asked for his reasoning and said I wasn't criticising. In all my training and practice I try to keep my hazards equidistant and this seemed to me to not demonstrate that. It's not an argument... just a discussion and I think Nigels videos and commentaries are excellent. Regards. Dave.
Hmm! Following on from STBurger's comments. I found this to be a most useful video. I feel that the rider's 'considerations' are clear and sound. I take your point re possible closeness of other vehicles -but recognise also their speed (stationary) and their inability to turn (blocked into the queue).Sometimes it's having discussions like this that make these videos so valuable.
The clip would have been better if the commentary had worked. The Autocom lead was faulty - Now replaced.
What started as a wild idea about posting the vids, has now turned into over 250,000 views in 12 months, valuable feedback, new friendships and plenty of time spent in the loft producing them.
Cars in such queues could turn into your path at any time and without much warning, and in that position it was more difficult for them to see you with their view obscured by the vehicle in front. Hope that makes sense. Not criticising. Would like to understand your reasoning. Thanks.
Interesting video. Thanks. I was surprised and would like to understand why when following the cattle van and having determined there was no opportunity to overtake you stayed to the right of your lane. It looked like this positioned you really close to stationary cars in the opposite direction and I would have judged that to be the most dangerous position.
Thnaks, I can see where you ar coming from. Never thought about that at the time. I suppose it the old 'Police Officer' creaping into my riding. Hard habits to break. I'll try and do another one taking on board all the comments raised.

@bluenapalm123 - In a nutshell, without quoting all the legislation, If you do not staddle the solid white line, it is not an offence.

What about looking at the front wheels of the cars rather than rely on indicators?

@snerktek - I like that one, good suggestion. Will put it into my next vid, Thanks

another great video - I agree with Stickyhouse that the camera makes vehicles look closer than they actually are.

well, you see, its illigal in the UK to use a cell phone in a car whilst in charge of the vehicle. is that legal in the states?
