  • hit 240p for better quality

  • Other than Carl Stalling... Cartoon music at it's best.

  • This is Factory Music :D!

  • 1:20 supremacy

  • I believe Pee wee's breakfast theme and the Simpsons theme (both by Danny Elfman) were based upon this tune. Anyway I love all three tunes!

  • How come there are six members in this "Quintette"? Is Scott not counting himself in that number? And why the feminine "-te" suffix? They all look like guys to me.

  • @SumErgoMonstro I think it's just the way it's spelled, because it wouldn't make sense that there should be a small version if a regular sized version doesn't exist. No idea about the number thing though.

  • @JjinttaSet He's saying that it should be 'Quintet' in the same way that it's 'quartet' or 'quartette' depending on whether there are more men or women in it. Conjugation and whatnot.

  • strangiato anyone?

  • @zectofrazer Rush's version is much better than this.

  • @gerbils99 ...although Rush's version is swipped from this original...I don't think so!

  • @gerbils99 Rush is a jewish rock band with low quality lyrics and soft-toned music. This is way better than Rush because these guys weren't copying others or trying to get their fame by being something they arent.

Rush is not a good band, they suck.

  • @unionofonion @unionofonion though gerbils is wrong saying that Rush's version is better because its not even the same song, you have to be completely out of your mind to say that they arn't incredible musicians. The musicianship in their songs is some of the highest around. I realise that Pearts lyrics can be be an aquired taste for some, but they do not even come close to sucking. By the way, Geddy Lee is the only one of Jewish descent, do some research before spouting your mouth.

  • im almost done learning this one!

  • Anyone here Soul Coughing fans?

  • I can see Daffy and Porky being put in diapers and shipped off by the stork to a good family:D

  • 1.30 Factory line music ftw :D

  • WOW, THANKS TVTROPES!

now... why can't I quit you?

  • They don't write (or play) great stuff like this anymore...

  • Im thinking of a cartoon factory

  • 1.25, ah good luney tunes memory's

  • I have this on CD...I always call it Bugs Bunny Music! I love this!

  • Finding this is like chancing upon your old childhood stuff in the attic as an adult and finding the most awesome toy you owned.

  • Just a little correction to sonic10. That's Cliff Leeman on drums and was the regular on the Hit Parade with Raymond.

  • His drummer was "Johnny Williams" aka the father of soundtrack composer John Williams.

  • Anyone have a link to the looney toons episode this was from, I seem to remember the ants marching to it taking away food.

  • @TMundo

Powerhouse Theme was used repeatedly by Carl Stalling in numerous Looney Tune episodes.

  • @TMundo this song was used in over 300 looney tunes cartoons! cool, huh!

  • @TMundo i remember it best from the episode of the 2 chipmunks in the vegetable cannery! lol!!! ;)

  • What in blazes are they superimposing on the picture?

  • @frotz661 They are using an early video mixer to overlay various images and oscilloscope-generated Lissajous figures. In addition, something is being used to variably warp (and sometimes multiply) the overlaid images. I would NOT be surprised if the added graphics were Scott's idea. I would also NOT be surprised if Scott himself had created some of the electronics used to do the effects--it would certainly be consistent with what I have seen of his research methods.

  • i believe raymond scott helped pioneer electronic music as well.

  • wow, didn't know this was the song with the ants walkin in looney toons or tom and jerry cartoons, whatever it was.

  • I'd really like to know how the dancing light effects were made for this video. Classic song. Scott was a genius.

  • What groovy retro video effects!

  • These guys were tight! raymond saw to that... bit of a perfectionist, I've heard.... same thing about "Weird al" yankovic... the results justify the means!

  • i love this tune!!!!!!!!

i remember hearing this tune in an episode of Ren and Stimpy!!!!

  • I've only just learned the name of this composition yesterday! It should be law that when great music is played, somewhere on the screen the title should be listed.

  • I thank Ren and Stimpy for motivating me to hunt down the original source of this song. : )

  • What's the visual effect laid over the picture, like reflections on water? Is it a TV feedback loop?

  • fairly odd parents

    ren and stimpy

    metroid awesome

    looney tunes

    animanics...

    WHERE IS THIS NOT PLAYED!?

  • I've been trying to find the name of this song for quite awhile. I can't believe yahoo answers actually helped

  • One of those pieces almost everyone has heard, yet can't seem to place. I've been trying to locate it FOREVER since I was a little kid. So glad to finally know the title and author of the piece.

  • Oh man, will this song ever stop haunting me... Yes, I know what you all are thinking, "Haunting you? You searched for the video and clicked on it yourself!" Truth is, I clicked a link in a little brother's profile on facebook and now, well, he was retarded enough to have played me right into it, knowing how this song annoys me. As funny as it sounds, it never goes away...

  • bless your soul for posting this. brilliant fantastic work!!!

  • So much for the 50's being bland and conformist. Whew!

Balt. Gas&Elec. Co most freakin' avant garde piece ever.

  • also played in La villa strangiato from Rush.

  • I love this song to death...

I first heard in on Ren and Stimpy and later on the Animaniacs Toy Shop horrors episode

I said it already, but I love this track...

  • Quintet with 6 people! I love it! Raymond Scott is the best!!!

  • Amazing!

  • I have died and gone to loony tunes heaven!....Thanks for posting.

  • I can rest happy now!

Been trying to find this tune for freaking ages

  • Glad I could add to your peace of mind.

  • I was at an Orioles game a few weeks back and a clip from this played when one of the players was announced.

I was listening to Benny Goodman's Sing, Sing, Sing earlier and I swore it reminded me of the tune.

Thank you so very much for posting this, It's much much appreciated

  • Varholy iz a pan flute playin' satan-banning mofo.

  • Holy crap, me too! It's been hell trying to describe it as the "Rube Goldberg song."

  • Wow! I had no idea there wa any Raymond Scott on film, thanks a bunch for this. I bought one of the Soothing Sounds For Baby CDs a few years ago and have been addicted ever since. No great surprise to find a lot of the ambient/synth people I listen to were influenced by him.

  • To powerhouse: the song that made cartoons swing!

  • i love this music, and i love this years!

  • YES!

  • Raymond Scott was a genius!

  • I was Portland last week and found a Raymond Scott figurine...he's playing his electronic music invention. What a surprise to find this gem.

  • Dude I got the only one in Los Angeles at Amoeba! how much was yours?

  • Mine was 49 bucks. I LOVE Amoeba...just visited their San Fran store!

  • so bad-assed!

bugs bunny was a cool neutral and chaotic rabbit, but WB neutered him long ago. :(

  • I could listen to this a thousand times!

  • Rush also used this in a few places in their tune "La Villa Strangiato"

  • lol!!!! ;) i can't help but think of the Bugs Bunny episode with the 2 chipmunks running around in the cannery getting into trouble when i hear this!! also, on a trivial note, the section of this at 1:37 inspired the rock group Rush when they wrote La Villa Strangiato, which has a section that sounds very similar to this.

  • it didnt inspire them, the ripped it off and got sued, settling out of court.

  • If you liked this original version you should definitely check out the Philharmonic's version too. Also worth a watch, if for nothing else the players and the instruments.. See 'related videos'

  • rad!

  • Great job!

  • BEST BEST BEST yet music, and musicians, and of course Composer...

  • THIS IS SO AWESOME!! I've been trying to find this for a while lol :)

  • The famous "assembly line" part of this song was sampled for Soul Coughing's song Bus to Beelzebub.

I sometimes love listening to these catchy old tunes.

  • how can they be a quintette when there's 6 of them?

  • It's called new math!

  • Ha-ha. Actually, it was a private joke of his.

From Wikipedia: In late 1936, Scott recruited a band from among his CBS colleagues, calling it the "Raymond Scott Quintette." It was a six-piece group, but the puckish Scott thought Quintette (his spelling) sounded "crisper"; he also told a reporter that he feared "calling it a 'sextet' might get your mind off music."

  • Voiceover man: "Here is Raymond Scott *WITH* A QUINTETTE."

There you have it. Two seperate entities. Raymond Scott, and the quintette.

  • @BranVan10k Raymond + his quintette = 6!

  • @BranVan10k

Raymond didn't include himself in the count, similarly he used the "quintette" spelling as a nod to convention ;)

  • cool stuff. better than the programming we're stuck with today.

  • this is what's going on in my head when I'm supposed to be paying attention in class

  • welcome to the automated assembly line of the future

  • This song inspired RUSH's Villa Strangiato.

    Very nice!

  • A tiny part of it anyways. Great tribute though, that song has to be in my top5 favorite Rush songs.

  • yep

you can here it at 1:37

  • RUSH is the bloze.

  • This is a great find. Thanks for this one!

  • Not only am I reminded of all those old cartoons but also Soul Coughing's Bus to Beelzebub which sampled it. Great stuff.

  • Its simple I want to watch and rate. When you disable ratings you have joined the ranks of the white power movement, the muslim and christian fundamentalists and everyone else who discourages ratings. What lovley company you keep. Btw found your vid on another channel so I am not worried.

  • Random Trivia: Raymond Scott's wife at the time was a vocalist on this show. More random trivia: "Your Hit Parade" was at one point the most popular musical show on United States television.

  • Just came from Google Answers. Now I finally hear what this originally sounded like. Funny reading though Comments and what different generations associate the song with.

Now I'd like to know how they produced those superimposed patterns that went so well with the music.

  • They patched in an osiliscope into the video.....I guess.

  • wish we still had music like this on the radio instead of that god awful hip and hop noise

  • well then travel back in time if its that much of a tragedy for you, don't blame the "demise" of music on hip hop, theres other music out there thats made the radio distasteful too, or maybe you're just being biased ;)

  • you should get SIRIUS satallite. they play this stuff all the time. thats how i came to look it up.

  • You've got Raymond Scott to blame for sequencers and synthesisers. He basically invented them.

There's room for all music. The radio (by fact of mass consensus and a plain weak signal path) just gets in the way. but I agree the majority of the hip-hop on the radio is godawful but just like Kenny G does not represent Great Jazz Soulja Boy and his ilk should not be miistaken for anything approximating hip hop.

  • its been used in countless cartoons as well as rush

    happy to help

  • yea i just picked up hemisheres by rush and heard this in one of the songs! that was awesome to hear in a rock song.

  • hey kick, one RUSH fan to another, i'll check that reference, you may be right but for sure the mid section (1:25-2:07) has been used in warner cartoons & adverts when they want to convey a mid 20th century industrial vibe...that being said, Powerhouse is a stand alone incredible piece of music, no matter how you hear it . i also love that Ray, by calling the group a quintette, was confident that his fans would infer that there were 6 guys on the band...

  • e40 sampled this on automatic

  • none of you will believe me but la villa strangiato from the album hemispheres by RUSH.....is inspired by this song....believe me or not but listen to it..then listen to this....alex lifeson clearly took the riffs from about 1:36 HA!

  • people have known that for like, 30 years now.

  • I have been aware of that since the very early 80's. When I first heard Powerhouse it came as a surprise when I heard the part that Rush used.

  • I wonder if he even knew the impact his music would have on the world.

  • Yeah, now, almost everyone who's tryng to get something complicated and weird to work, thinks in this tune

  • That song is the soundtrack to my work day.

  • haha. madness!!

  • You are not alone. O_o

  • it reminds me of an ant walking lol

  • Ladies and gentleman the man that influenced the most eclectic guinesses ever but you never heard about !..........It took the creator of Ren and Stimpy to reveal his inspiration.

  • To be fair Isoprimus, Scott's music was adapted for the Looney tunes first, though Ren and Stimpy did use the original recordings.

  • I wish there was a list of all the most used classical and band pieces that WB used for Merry Melodies and Luney Tunes...stuff like this and Franz List's "Hungarian Rhapsody"...

I need to define my "stock music" collection as a video editor...

  • "the most eclectic guinesses" you say?

Must mean the ones brewed in Dublin by leprechauns.

  • thats not even how you spell Guinness

  • Guess who the drummer is - John Williams, Sr.!

He is the father of one of the most famous film composers of all time - John Williams.

    Ever heard of Star Wars?

Yes, this awesome drummer's musical genetic code is still alive and well to this day...

    Talk about "leaving your mark..."

    Wow...

  • same here iv have asked so many people about this song.... its takes me back to the day when Looney Tunes wasn't on Boomerang.

  • Great song! Thanks, I was in the mood for this at work!

  • This is so f'n awesome! Thank you for posting

  • who remembers watching warner brothers cartoons with this in the bg?

  • Perfect! .. Thanks for sharing..

  • Excellent!!!Thank you!!

  • FINALLY IVE FOUND IT

  • @Str3aml1n3d

    So have I! :D

  • sorry, i didn't mean to misspell RUSH

  • Lifeson uses this in La Villa Strangiato, so Rush has sampled this as well lol

  • lumpy, re: 1st prog band sounds about right altho' to my ears, jazz was/is always all about progressiveness: as a side bar, by a show of hands. who besides me would LUV to see RUSHH do this song?

  • Rush did do this song. Listen to La Villa Strangiatto on Hemispheres. They borrowed a fair portion.

  • That's what I'd always heard. I'd also heard that Raymond Scott influenced Zappa.

  • As Pat Mastelotto (drummer for King Crimson, XTC) once said (concerning the Raymond Scott Quintet)... "the first prog band?"

    Great schtuff!! Thanks for posting!

  • I was looking for the name of this song for 10 years....

  • me too! it has driven me crazy for YEARS

  • Check out "Bus To Beelzebub" by Soul Coughing as well. They sample this song.

  • OMG, I've been looking for a full version of this track forever! Thank you so much for uploading!

  • raymond scott did more for music than anyone else in the 20th century

  • I remember that classical composer, John Williams', dad was the original Scott drummer. Boy he was great. I don't think that's him here though (at least this doesn't look like hime to me).

  • Nice! Awesome orchestration too!!!!!!!

  • I Love you Rush haha :P This really is genious! :)

  • This is like heavy metal for the 1950's,

the middle part was like the breakdown....I remember it being used for factory parts in cartoons. Oh youth!

  • Your right on both accounts of it being the heavy metal of the 50s and also the breakdown, As if you find the track by RUSH called la villa strangiato that middle breakdown is used

  • That breakdown is also used in "Rhythm Section Want Ad" by They Might be Giants.

  • the heavy metal of the fifties? not really. the fifties version of heavy metal would be, like, the blues or bo diddley. raw electric guitar based stuff. what scott was doing was just another variation on "modern jazz" or "progressive jazz."

  • I beg to differ with you both: You didn't here a note of "jazz" in this, either (not a put-down of it, incidentally); this is contemporary chamber music, using the vocabulary and instrumentation of a three-horn jazz sextet. (Leave it Scott to call si pieces a "quintette..." I wonder who he thought he was leaving out?)

  • Himself

  • I think he said 'Calling it a sextet would distract people from the music'.. or something along those lines..

  • He just thought quintette sounded better

  • Heh, I had no idea that part of Rush's La Villa Strangiato was based on the middle part (1:37 onwards)!

    Thanks for posting this!

  • i've never heard the whole thing before, just the middle.

  • What a novel composition to be so orthodox and musical.

  • "powerhouse" is electronics pioneer raymond scott's best known work. "powerhouse" would be "kraftwerk" in german. it isn't an electronic work, but is it possible that ralf and florian of the group "kraftwerk" chose the name as a kind of homage to scott? am i the only one who has ever made this connection? perhaps it is just a fortuitous coincidence.................

  • Oh my god. seriously great, thanks for that.

  • Thanks. Great performance of an iconic piece.

A whole generation is indebted to Carl Stallings for introduction to great music such as this in the MM/LT animated shorts.

btw -- if you want a real challenge, try arranging this tune for solo guitar. ;>)

  • Well... the whole song is cool... but the middle part is just... godlike, it sounds incredible! It was a good idea to disable rating because to give the song only 5 stars would be a shame!

  • A few months ago I learned of Raymond Scott's existence, and how he was the one who wrote this song. That came as a total surprise to me, because all this time I thought Carl Stalling wrote it. I was also thrilled to learn that he was also a pioneer in electronic music, and had also composed music for the likes of Jim Henson. It's a shame more people haven't heard of Scott.

Those visual effects on the screen are kinda neat, very psychedelic for the 50's! :)
