yeah it sounds like there might've been something wrong with the prompter but he really should've been able to adlib much of it. i'm not the best public speaker in the world but i've given plenty of presentations off of notes written in the most basic shorthand, like at a ratio of 3-5 words of notes to 75-100 spoken words. the one time i dealt with a glitching prompter i let the screen fill as much as possible before freestyling based on keywords but i had to pause a few times to slow down

This is hilarious -- but my hat is off to this guy for how well he handled it later. Keep in mind: what happened was he was a last minute substitute; they said, "don't worry, just read the prompt;" and then prompt screen malfunctioned. Most of what he's doing is trying to cover up for the fact that there's nothing on the screen or worse, what's on it is garbled. He has gone on to a career as a sports announcer and laughs about the episode in good humor.

There was pure silence and it was so pressurising. I had to sit down and do it later. It was horrifyingly embarrassing so your comment has cheered me up a bit knowing that I'm not the only one!!
