We don't hear this kind of "singing" today. This was when people did not try to sound "Operatic," but instead sang with a wonderful open and relaxed throat. The result is a beatiful ringing voice, no matter what voice type you were.
Gobbi knew how to perform. Such depth of understanding in this performance, he is just brilliant. Yes fine, we all know there are better voices out there...but sometimes you just want to see an actor. BRAVO!
I heard a joke once: Man goes to doctor. Says he's depressed. Says life is harsh and cruel. Says he feels all alone in a threatening world. Doctor says, "Treatment is simple. The great clown Pagliacci is in town tonight. Go see him. That should pick you up." Man bursts into tears. Says, "But doctor... I am Pagliacci." Good joke. Everybody laugh. Roll on snare drum. Curtains.
I believe he did as Pavarotti's career began in the late 1950's Your statement is most profound and appropriate. Their pairing in an Operatic work would have been more than gigantic!! :-)
I have the 1954 EMI La Scala recording w/Tulio Serafin as Conductor. Gobbi was the Epitome Tonio. No else could perform the Role like him. This was considered more in the vein of Verismo (true to life) than Bel Canto Style which was the fasion in the early 1800's w/Vincenzo Bellini, G. Rossini, and Gaetano Donizetti. Verismo style was
He couldn't sing this at all, he's a bass-baritone. He would fail at the high Ab, at the latest, not to speak of his timbre, which is absolutely not fitting this aria.
Tito Gobbi's phrasing and performance was best, but as far as vocal quality Robert Merill is my favorite by far. The high Ab is also perfect from Merill. Truthfully speaking, very few baritones have those perfect high notes.
Yes, I know that. The problem is that my comment wasn't attached to the one I was responding to. When I'm saying 'He couldn't sing this at all, he's a bass-baritone', I'm not talking about Gobbi, but about Erwin Schrott. You can't see this from the comment structure here though, so... I guess I'll have to live with the thumbs downs.
I see Piasecznik, you are right. Though "Serenade"s comment is not available, he got too many thumbs down... I just listened to Herlea's presentation and it is awesome too.
Gobbi and Bechi were very much artists with peculiar voices, but is worldwide recognized that the best voiced have been Merrill and Renato Zanelli. Who were more interesting to listen? Everyone... Warren is a case in himself; no comparissons.
There are and have been several baritones with better/richer voices but no one can match his acting and the emotional range/impact his voice could project.
I had the pleasure of seeimg Gobbi several times.Twice as Iago and once as Scarpia. This was in the mid 60s. The annoying flutter one hears on this was not so evident and to see him in action was to appreciate him. A great singing actor
I'll be the first to admit that I don't know Gobbi's voice as well as many, but his singing tends to be on the under-side of the pitch throughout this aria. Is that a reflection of Gobbi or technolgy?
I think this is technology. I can't believe anyone can sing consistently flat the whole piece. Plus, I have another version of the Prologo, and it's perfectly O.K. The greatest singer ever!!!
Talk about artsy. This is a freaking amazing video, and Gobbi is an amazing singer. He has a consistency of voice through his range that few baritones do.
Tito Gobbi was born to play the Verdi roles. he was probably the greatest Verdian actor ever. No-one acts with their voice like this man. As with verdi's music, If you close your eyes, Gobbi's Voice does the acting and tells you exactly what is going on. No-one ever interpreted the music like this man. Simply the greatest acting singer ever.
Completely agree with you!!! You don't need to look at the screen to understand the drama (I mean the action) to the full scale. He renders EVERYTHING with his voice, and this IS what it means to be an opera singer. For an Opera is not to watch - it is to listen.
what an absolutely captivating performance. Some people say that gobbi didn't heve the most beautiful of baritone voices, but what he lacked, if anything, vocally, he more than made-up for with charisma, style and drama. In my opinion one of the greatest operatic singer/actors of all time. Thanks so much for posting this
Me too!! Me too! Thrilled by his voice. Swept along with his acting. Everthing he played, he was... from the barber to this to Scarpia, etc. etc. Must subscribe to Gabba.
It's incredible!!!. And just to think he didn't possess the best vocal material. I have another, better version of Prologo from the movie "Mad about opera", but I don't know how to upload it. Fenomenal singer and actor.

This is true opera; who cares if his Ab is weak? He is so much more involved emotionally than any other baritone.

Really great, he found depths even in frequently performed pieces that others with greater voices only hinted at. This is almost frightening.

You don't seem reasonable.
Fisrt of all be aware it had to be flat cause it wasn't an "a" but "a-flat".
And I think he performed the Tonio Prologue but not one note.
And finally, the final note was an "e".
