Vanderbilt, Kentucky, South Carolina, Tennessee, LSU, Miss. State, Arkansas, and Auburn. And you think Utah would finish under .500? 2 teams in that conference could give utah a game. Geogia, UF, and 'bama. We all know how that last one worked out....
Utah is measured by playing TCU and BYU every year. it is absurd to say that a schedule like that warrants any kind of credibility for a national championship. I don't care who they beat in a bowl game. If you play Flordia, LSU, Alabamba, Tennessee, Auburn, Georgia...all better than either BYU or TCU (much more often than not).
Any good team can beat any great team on any given Saturday. Credibility is given to those teams who do it regularly. Utah, BYU, and TCU are not in this category.
Long time ago since you posted this but it's still at the top of the list. All better than TCU / BYU? UCLA beats Tenn. then 2 weeks later BYU beats them 59-0. Now don't get me wrong, the whole they beat then they lost this is kinda stupid... But c'mon now. LSU wasn't that great this year... TCU or BYU would beat them or keep it close. Auburn... they went 5-7. So there is 3 teams that BYU/TCU could beat out of the 6 you name. And them beating the other 3 is 0%? They could both compete.
I don't suppose I have to tell you that BYU lost their bowl game to a 5 loss Arizona team and that TCU beat a Boise State team who didn't collect a single win over a team that wound up ranked at season's end.
I suppose I need to reming you that Utah is 14-4 against BCS teams since '03, and TCU has 10 win seasons 5 out of the last 6 (they have some impressive skins on the wall too).... That put's TCU and Utah in the "regualrly beating good teams" category. BYU has "good" teams, but they can never get over the hump. and losing bowl games is what they do (6th worst bowl winning percentage in the country) I won't defend them.....
You are right Boise was in the Poinsettia becasue they had a weak schedule. Just becasue their schedule was weak doesn't mean they were. Boise is a good team, they just need to learn how to schedule
Utah lost 4 games in 2007 to UNLV (10 loss team, unranked), Air Force (4 loss team including bowl, unranked), Oregon St (4 loss team, unranked)., and BYU (2 losses, #14 ranked)
2005 - Utah's team returned Very few starters and lost most key players to draft and QB got hurt towards the end (and coach went to florida) Not enought time for recruits to have an effect
2006- Brian Johnson (QB) is out w/ medical RS. plus absolutely no run game to speak of
2007 - 3 of the 4 losses came when BJ was out (again), our X reciever, starting RB and two O-linemen were all also out....
poor B.O. that was a perfect football storm, a truly beatiful day. sunny, mid- to upper-70s. offense clicking. defense on rampage. opponent careless with ball. blocked fg. 59-0 shutout.
BYU Domiated! Everytime BYU posts a big wins the cry babies come out. TOOOOOO Bad!!! I ltook my 11 yr old son to this won and we still talk about it.
Thank BYU!!!!!!

BYU, Boise State, and Utah probably wouldn't finish .500 in the SEC, Big 12, or in the Big 10. A bazillion people would agree with this statement.

...Which is why Utah pounded on the team that undefeated in the regular season in the SEC.....

...and Oregon State is surely a better team than USC.
Tough conference schedules produce tough conference losses and good teams wind up with 3-4 losses.

However; in ALL of those years Utah stil managed to win their bowl games.... (except '02, didn't qualify)

2007 Utah lost 4 games (Pac 10 loss)
2006 Utah lost 5 games (Pac 10 and WAC losses)
2005 Utah lost 5 games (ACC loss)
2003 Utah lost 2 (big 12 loss)
2002 Utah lost 6 (pac 10, big 10 losses)
In 2004, they didn't beat a single ranked team until they beat #25 Pittsburgh in the bowl.
This is a far cry from the resume of a powerhouse program.

2002. - fired our long time coach.
