There's no telling what destroyed most of these tanks - but I guarantee few (if any) were from RPGs. Some may even have been by U.S. aircraft. If a tank breaks down or loses a track to a mine or even runs out of fuel in a hot zone where they can't get a wrecker in to tow it out, they will call in an airstrike to destroy it in place to avoid it falling into enemy hands.
America is not fighting all these wars to win them, in any conventional sense.

The both abrams and challenger 2 are great tanks but me personaly I think that the leopard 2 tank is one of the greatest tanks ever built and also what most people don't know is the germans came out with the abrams but they hated it and let the US take the credit and the leopard 2 came out even before the first abrams tank created.
@Odell1941 To be a little more accurate, but in no way conclusive, both tanks evolved from the MBT-70, which was a joint US and German development in the 1960s. It was abandoned in 1971 because of budget overages but both countries went on to develop their respective versions, and the rest is history that is being made today.

Yes, the Germans had some inventive designs and moved tank development to the next level. In my view, probably the most notable tanks were the Tiger I and Panther. But you have to carefully consider the designs, pros and cons. The Soviet T34 tank of WW 2 is an interesting design.

The German tanks high quality is noted by some to be a flaw in that they took longer to produce compared to the Soviet and American tanks. This is where the experienced tank crews superseded their machines in terms of being the more valuable asset. Tank development is an ongoing evolution.

It was not so much that our designs on most models were better (They were not, for the most part) but we could (And when I say WE I mean the allies as a whole) churn out armored units faster than the Axis and numbers were greatly the key to victory in that aspect. Also the fact we had generally faster tanks. Our designs were ok, just needed heavier main guns.

Most of these tanks did not suffer from armor piercing RPG strikes. Anyone who has been around and seen the type of damage it can do would know that. I'm not seeing holes that burned threw the armor. I do see disabled tracks, but that doesn't kill a tanks ability to function or protect the occupants. One Challenger 2 survived 70 rpg strikes in Basra. Another survied 14 rpg and 1 MILAN anti-tank missile strike. There is only 1 confirmed rpg-7vr kill of an M1. That info is easy to find idiots.

To all those saying an RPG couldnt kill an Abrams - you know shit. From the front, sure but a side, rear or top shot can easily. 1:39 the Abrams is starting to brew up - In battle if you do catch alight and you cant perform damage control then you're in trouble. Where im from a mobility kill is just that - stopping the tank in any way BUT the tank may be completely operational in all other respects; and in this case the drivers foot was blown off but the tank was still capable of fighting; however they retreated (smart thing) before the drivers went into shock/fell unconscious.
@Internetbutthurt only three Challenger 2s have been damaged in combat, one of which was destroyed by another Challenger 2 in a friendly fire incident in another a Challenger 2 came under attack from forces with MGs and rocket propelled grenades. It was hit directly by fourteen rocket propelled grenades from close range and a MILAN anti-tank missile. The crew survived remaining safe within the tank. The worst damage was to the sighting system. And the last one survived being hit by 70 RPGs

@Roothkalki Chobham armor resisted 14 direct RPG hits and a guided missle hit in the first gulf war, that was like 20 years ago and that layered armor has become the standard of modernized armor. No tank is fool-proof, but you are better off in an M1 or Challenger-2 they are actually designed to be resistant to anti-tank weapons, and while quite a few were lost in action, the crews rarely died and that is an important fact you shouldnt overlook... There's no telling what destroyed most of these tanks - but I guarantee few (if any) were from RPGs. Some may even have been by U.S. aircraft. If a tank breaks down or loses a track to a mine or even runs out of fuel in a hot zone where they can't get a wrecker in to tow it out, they will call in an airstrike to destroy it in place to avoid it falling into enemy hands.

Americans don't know that little secret. Export versions of T72 were weaker than originals in every way. Additionaly to what you mentioned, the armour was not fully metal, there was a sand fill-up. All was done to prevent a strong resistance in case, if that country would turn against USSR. That's why Abrams easely destroyed T-72s in Iraq.

US lost this way 50 tanks and most of victims was sitting low drivers. The both abrams and challenger 2 are great tanks but me personaly I think that the leopard 2 tank is one of the greatest tanks ever built and also what most people don't know is the germans came out with the abrams but they hated it and let the US take the credit and the leopard 2 came out even before the first abrams tank created.

@Odell1941 To be a little more accurate, but in no way conclusive, both tanks evolved from the MBT-70, which was a joint US and German development in the 1960s. It was abandoned in 1971 because of budget overages but both countries went on to develop their respective versions, and the rest is history that is being made today.

@Odell1941 I'm very partial to the Leopard 2A6, although I do think the Abrams is an interesting tank, with its jet engine and huge heat signature. I agree that any tank is probably only as good as the tank crew.
Yes, the Germans had some inventive designs and moved tank development to the next level. In my view, probably the most notable tanks were the Tiger I and Panther. But you have to carefully consider the designs, pros and cons. The Soviet T34 tank of WW 2 is an interesting design.

@Odell1941 The T34 certainly had its flaws but all tanks did to whatever degree. The German tanks high quality is noted by some to be a flaw in that they took longer to produce compared to the Soviet and American tanks. This is where the experienced tank crews superseded their machines in terms of being the more valuable asset. Tank development is an ongoing evolution.
Canada leased Leopard 2s from Germany to use in their combat role in Afghanistan. Historically, Canada had the Leopard 1.

@Odell1941 That mass production you mentioned, as far as I understand it, was really what got the Allies over the German tanks. It was not so much that our designs on most models were better (They were not, for the most part) but we could (And when I say WE I mean the allies as a whole) churn out armored units faster than the Axis and numbers were greatly the key to victory in that aspect. Also the fact we had generally faster tanks. Our designs were ok, just needed heavier main guns.

Most of these tanks did not suffer from armor piercing RPG strikes. Anyone who has been around and seen the type of damage it can do would know that. I'm not seeing holes that burned threw the armor. I do see disabled tracks, but that doesn't kill a tanks ability to function or protect the occupants. One Challenger 2 survived 70 rpg strikes in Basra. Another survied 14 rpg and 1 MILAN anti-tank missile strike. There is only 1 confirmed rpg-7vr kill of an M1. That info is easy to find idiots.

To all those saying an RPG couldnt kill an Abrams - you know shit. From the front, sure but a side, rear or top shot can easily. 1:39 the Abrams is starting to brew up - In battle if you do catch alight and you cant perform damage control then you're in trouble. The latest RPGs can kill any Western tank from the front. Proof? the Chall 2 is more heavily armoured than the M1A2 and the one in the article which received a mobility kill had ERA. @Internetbutthurt mobility kill means it threw a track the crew was not killed and the tank was put in service again after repair. The Rpg-7 can in fact penetrate 11inches of plate armor. the cermamic chobam armor would in fact defeat the first strike most of the time. Tanks do not operate alone without infanrty to screen them from hunter/killer teams tanks are verry vulnerable to tow and sagger missiles an antitank mine will destroy an abrams but often members of the crew survive.

@sass225 shot for RPG -7 which pierces armor, 11 inches is a very old 70's. In the 80's was shot designed for the RPG-7, which breaks the 500 - 600 mm solid homogeneous armor. In the late 80's was shot designed for the RPG-7, which breaks a continuous 800 mm homogeneous armor.

Where im from a mobility kill is just that - stopping the tank in any way BUT the tank may be completely operational in all other respects; and in this case the drivers foot was blown off but the tank was still capable of fighting; however they retreated (smart thing) before the drivers went into shock/fell unconscious.

@Internetbutthurt only three Challenger 2s have been damaged in combat, one of which was destroyed by another Challenger 2 in a friendly fire incident in another a Challenger 2 came under attack from forces with MGs and rocket propelled grenades. It was hit directly by fourteen rocket propelled grenades from close range and a MILAN anti-tank missile. The crew survived remaining safe within the tank. The worst damage was to the sighting system. And the last one survived being hit by 70 RPGs

Thats interesting, thanks for that, coz in another thread ive got some guy telling me no Chal 2 has ever been lost. Milan was good back in the 70s but it to is dated now. Dont know how they managed to count 70 RPGs..sounds a bit BS, but I would expect older RPG-7s to do very little to a Chal 2 from the front.

Those M1 tanks were broke down and in tow, one still had the tow bar on. No RPG can take out a TANK, are you crazy. The only thing that takes out an M1 is friendly fire or another M1.....please.

@Roothkalki Chobham armor resisted 14 direct RPG hits and a guided missle hit in the first gulf war, that was like 20 years ago and that layered armor has become the standard of modernized armor. No tank is fool-proof, but you are better off in an M1 or Challenger-2 they are actually designed to be resistant to anti-tank weapons, and while quite a few were lost in action, the crews rarely died and that is an important fact you shouldnt overlook...
