Handel was a master of ceremonial music and was adored for it. The singing is splendid but he didn't write for large choirs and orchestras, not having them available.

It may have been written in honour of a british victory but it was written about Judas Maccabaeus and his fight against the Seleucids. It is basically the story of Hanukah. This song is as important to Jews for Hanukah as is Messiah is to christians for Christmas - both, of course written by Handel, and equally as stirring.

RUSS1234ish is right and it's true of almost all wars. Moses is know for advising his people to kill everyone, even the children, but to keep the young girls to rape. The modern concept of war is to kill civilians to Protect Our Boys. Romanticising war and killing by films, games and toys is revolting.

This was written in honour of William Augustas Duke of Cumberland after the Battle of Culloden on 16th April 1746. This man ordered his troops to murder wounded Jacobite soldiers as they lay on the battle field.He then had his men rape , ravage and murder their way throughout the highlands of Scotland committing ethnic cleansing and genocide. He was nothing more than a BUTCHER. Today he would be tried as a war criminal.
