I don't care what anyone says, Mathew makes the prefect Mr Darcy. He plays him closest to the book. Colin Firth's Darcy is good but the 1940's one is just naff!
@Jadexxpxx Closest to the book?! The 1995 version practically uses the book as a script! And how is the 2005 version anything like the book? "I luff, I luff, I luff you." And weren't Darcy and Elizabeth walking with Kitty, Jane, and Bingley when he proposed again? Not in a random field somewhere.
@supaflyninjagleek20 I said the Matthew Macfadyen's version of DARCY is closest to the book. There is no doubting that what happens 1995 version is almost the same as the book. Read more closely next time dimwit!
I like all three of these versions of Pride and Prejudice. They each have an element in each I like. I think in my own opinion that they their good points. The only problem that I have with two of them, which are the 1940s, and 2005 version is that they are too short in my opinion but in what they put into those versions are mostly the good parts in my opinion. I have loved Pride and Prejudice for years and I do not think that I will ever stop loving Pride and Prejudice.
2005 version hands down - its more expressive of there romance. Its a real romantic ending and illustrates that climatic moment when Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy both show their mutual love. The dialogues are captivating without having to be too details and its shot beautifully and the chemistry is just <3 .. wow.
Without the need of going in who said what, how they felt etc- too much dialogue.. because the whole film demonstrates that UNLIKE the book where the dialogue is needed for clarity.
The screenwriter for the 1995 version didn't like the second engament scene as well. He said that if he could rewrite it he would have more loving looks and less walking. lol I think that would have been better too.
I don't think Darcy was pirdeful enough to be uncomfortable to speak with anyone below his social ranking. Obviously that is not true since his housemaid said many good things about him when Lizzie visisted Pemberly. I think Darcy was uncomfortable with speaking with anyone that he didn't know closely. Darcy's pride made him believe that he didn't have to at least try to talk with others even he was too shy or closed up to do so.
Both the 1995 and 2005 versions are great! I don't people have to belittle the 2005 version to make a point on the goodness of the 1995 one. And vice versa. People don't have to belittle the 1995 version to make a point on the goodness of the 2005 version. I think fans of either version (or both) can agree that each film has its own great merits and should be judged as two separate interpretations of the book. Cus as much as they are faithful to the book none of the versions ARE the book.
Oh I love these videos of yours so much!! But you really, really, really, REALLY ought to use scenes from the 1980 version as well. It might just be my favorite. (Aside from the 2005, I cannot help being inclined to one catered to the tastes of this generation.)
I feel that the new one (2005) is the best one. It's the most real one. The other ones seem so fake......it's weird. The 2005 version makes you feel like your actually in the movie and it's actually happening. I don't like the other two. The actors also don't portray the scene very well either. IDK I just love the 2005 version and it's just so amazing to me :) Also, the music is amazing!! I love everything about this movie, and its message is very strong. I love it, I love it , I love it :D
My favourite PP versions, although Matthew is the most handsome one, Colin the best concerning the novel adaptation and Laurence Olivier is brilliant in his own way ;)
Even though 1995 version is closer to the book, Mr. Darcy doesn't look one bit in love with Elizabeth as the other two do. I've only seen the 2005 version but I think Matthew Macfayden portrayed Mr. Darcy quite well, and besides he's hot, well if u ignore the chest hair. The black and white version made Mr. Darcy too in love with Elizabeth and the 1995 version made Mr.Darcy far from being romantic so overall the best version in my opinion is the 2005 version!!!!
i guess i can see the big differneces among the three movie, i wouldn't talk about 1940 movie cause i've never seen it and it's to old , but 1995 looks so...... i don't know lizzy and darcy don't seem to talk from the depths of their hearts..... besides, it's true that darcy should be proud but to some point, i mean look at him he's suppose to be declaring his love again, he doesn't seem to have feelings at all!
unlike 2005 version which is the BEST in every thing,
why do i keep thinking that the 2005 version is the most feelingful? i just feel no emotion in the 1992 version andd the 1940's was kinda cheesy...well i only watched the '05 version and i cant say anything but i really love that movie...
Just like UsoppAngel who is majoring in film and writing, it depends on your taste and not on whether which is far truthful or not. By the way
llandudnoboy (I just had to say this) their are still arguments about who was pride and who was prejudice. Some people, including me, believe that Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth shared these traits and expressed them throughout the book. Again it's all for interpretation, so it's pretty unfair for others to say it as though it's a fact.
I respect your opinion llandudnoboy . Of course it's more faithful to the book, I'm alright with that, I just prefer the 2005 version. Both have faults and I have respect for them perfectly. It's all up for interpretation however, which is why people find one or the other characters more appealing. This is just my problem, people keep saying that the series is far superior than the movie, as if it's a fact when it's an opinion. Neither are better than the other, and that's a fact.
I know a lot of people are griping about how the 2005 version of the book was not as true to it as the others. But in the end it is the superior film. Books and movies are two different mediums, it is unrealistic to expect one to be true to the other and still be just as good. I love the book and I love the 2005 movie more than the other two because I respect the book as a great book and the film as a great film. I was a kind of film and writing major, just so people know where I'm coming from.
I actually quite liked Keira Knightly as Lizzie. She seemed to be much more independent and had a younger, more lively attitude. The 2005 version was also probably the most romantic; however the 1995 version is more accurate in comparison to the book..
Not trying to be rude or anything, but what is it with people and Colin Firth? He's not really attractive at all, and Matthew makes the perfect Mr. Darcy. I prefer the newer version, it just seems more real to me than the others.
I have watched the series and I still stand by my opinion. I've already read the book and to me Colin Firth was too cold as Mr. Darcy, and
Jennifer Ehle was nothing I pictured as Elizabeth. Maybe it's the hype all over Colin Firth that drives me angry. And faithful? The scene where 'Mr. Darcy comes out of a lake' that everyone goes crazy for wasn't even in the book. Like laurissy said, both have their faults and virtues. I just love the newer version. ;)
As a gentleman with an income in excess of £10,000 and a massive country estate in Derbyshire he was as far removed from every day society as it was possible to be in the 18C.
He clearly states he felt uncomfortable talking to those below him socially and everyone who came into contact with him felt him cold.
This is why the BBc adaptation is so successful as it remains so faithful to Jane Austins interpretation of the novel.
My issues with the 2005 are as follows: Drastic changes in character of Mr. Bennet. The Bennet's did not have a loving marriage. The scene with Elizabeth visiting Pemberley does not make sense. This should be a pinnacle and instead I was left asking "What?" While the ending is very romantic--It would not been proper for two unmarried people to meet the way they did.
Joe Wright made an entertaining movie, but not a faithful one.
There was nothing in the newer version of the movie that suggested that Mr. Bennet was satisfied with his marriage. He was sarcastic towards his wife most of the time and only had one tiny moment where he and his wife had a laugh together. What gave you that impression? The scene where she's visiting Pemberley made sense. It was in the BOOK. Did you mean the scene where she walks into a room herself without an escort. Maybe I'm misunderstanding. Well the ending was coincidental...
.... they happened to be awake thinking about one another. What about the scene as I mentioned before in the series? That wasn't in the book. They didn't have to create that scene where Mr. Darcy 'happens' to come out of a lake in the first place.
I completely agree with you. But I even thought the characterizations of Darcy and Lizzy were off. Darcy hardly showed the pride that is so pivotal in the original work (his social awkwardness was emphasized instead). Lizzy was lively, but she came off as a bit immature (to me), which wasn't quite right. So yes, entertaining movie, but to someone who had first read the actual book and then watched the different versions... this film left uncertainty and this awkward "...what?" feeling.
This is why the BBc adaptation is far superior to everything before it as it remains so faithful to the novel in vertually every detail apart from Darcy's dip in his pond but that certainly improves the story no end.
@spongecheese101 because being smokin hot isn't the same thing as being handsome. a lot of people feel like he nails mr. darcy's awkwardness, intelligence, and compassion to a T. pretty much all of his expressions kill me in the 1995 series.
Though I love the movie with Keira Knightley, I must admit that the -95 TV series is the best ever made, and it really follows the book superbly. I cannot see a better version forthcoming.
The 2005 version is my favorite! but the book itself is the best! although i love the Kiss between Lizzie and Darcy in the 2005version, "Mrs. Darcy, Mrs. Darcy, Mrs. Darcy, Mrs. Darcy..." :)
how romanctic at first i only watch pride n prejudice coz of colin firth but now i've watch d 1940 ,1995 n 2005 its all too smashing..the romance is so alive n look so damn real......
The 1995 one is my favorite, but I thought '05 one was an excellent adaptation with the time limit. I don't care for Keira Knightley, but she was okay, and Matthew was a very good Darcy (I'm biased--I love Colin Firth, always).
And the cinematography was SO beautiful! But one question--why the minute-long walking scene with Matthew (at the beginning of this clip)? I don't know film, so...But as a viewer, it seemed like an awfully long shot.
I think the long shot is very appropriate here. it makes me feel a sense of expectation, as if I'm also holding my breath waiting for him to get closer to me.
whenever I forget that "the course of true love never did run smooth" I am always glad to come back to Jane Austen's heroines. They stood the course and true love did win the day.
the 1940's version sucks! Lady Catherine hated Elizabeth and, in the book, even send a letter to Mrs. Darcy telling her so and Mr. Darcy was very angry at her for sometime. Eliza eventually convinced him to forgive his aunt though.
It does not suck, the reason you show disfavour to the film is because you are a totally different generation, and the mindset was very different back then to now. Perhaps in another 10 years or so you will aquire the film better, if you watch it again.
Lady Cathrine was one of the high ranking Aristocrats of the day, while the Bennetts at very best scraped into the gentry. So there would of been a large resentment there between their classes.
To tell the truth I never saw the 1940's version, and I don't mean to prejudice agaisnt old films, but there is a difference in acting style between today and back then when movies were a new commodity and actors were still getting use to it and all. By saying it 'sucks' I merely meant the the script was not accurate to the book (based on the clips I watched).
No, it did not follow the book at all and was meant to be more of a lighthearted comedy than anything else. I enjoy it, if I try to think of it as being completely separate from PRIDE AND PREJUDICE the novel. I watch A&E if I want to see the book brought to life, and 2005 if I want a modern chick flick P&P. They've all got their pros and cons. (Oh yeah, don't forget BBC's 1980 adaptation...heh...)
I find the'40 film difficult to watch even after many viewings, although I'm an ardent admirer of the work of both Garson and Olivier and of the AARP generation. Garson was 36, still gorgeous, but too old to play Elizabeth. MGM used GWTW costumes to save money instead of ones to indicate Austen's Regency. Perhaps the actors were directed to be so over-the-top "British" by Robert Leonard. It is interesting to see how acting has changed. See Olivia de Havilland in THE SNAKE PIT for the transition.
Some of Darcy's lines from the new version bug me... so in that regard I prefer the 95 version for it's accuracy. but by golly, the music for the 2005 version! *happy sigh... then it gets to the 40s kiss, ROFL!*
It so different in these versions: morning-day-evening,they are sit-walk-stand,alone-with company, and so different intonations and phrases. The most romantic it in 2005 version,of course, but I prefer 1995film scene.
I did one of the Assembly (when everyone first meets everyone), but NBC Universal did not like it...clearly they had some of the dialogue tagged in that scene. Oh well...even using little segments like I do, I don't want to upset them. So my next one will now be Mr. Wickham's tale...aside from it taking place outside in the 2005 version, there are great similarities in the dialogue, but great differences in the demeanor of the actors/actresses.
I don't care what anyone says, Mathew makes the prefect Mr Darcy. He plays him closest to the book. Colin Firth's Darcy is good but the 1940's one is just naff!

How anyone can compare the magnificent BBc adaptation with the 1944-2005 attempts is beyond me.
Colin Firth plays Darcy to perfection.
In this final acceptance of marriage scene he is clearly Elizabeth's superior ie aristocracy and her upper middleclass.
Kiera Knightley doesnot appear to be that different to Darcy in the 2005 film and Olivier doesnot come over that well in the 1944 adaptation.
I still marvel at that BBc adaptation it remains faithful to the novel ,the others do not.

I think what makes the 2005 version so good is the music. It's so perfect that you can close your eyes and still feel the scene.

whenever I forget that "the course of true love never did run smooth" I am always glad to come back to Jane Austen's heroines. They stood the course and true love did win the day.

Thanks for uploading all these videos! Been watching all of them (again :P) in a row
I just must say that 2005 version is so tiresome that it's unbelieveable, my favourite is 1995 :D and the 1940 is hilarious!
Anyways, thanks again :D

the 1940's version sucks!

Wow, that kiss from the 1940's is a little unrealistic!!! Damn! I love these spliced scenes, thank you for posting them!!

Love it! I suprise myself in saying I the 2005 the most, though the 1995 is closest to the book.

Wonderful scene and great video!
It so different in these versions: morning-day-evening,they are sit-walk-stand,alone-with company, and so different intonations and phrases. The most romantic it in 2005 version,of course, but I prefer 1995film scene.
What will be your next scene, not a secret?
unKiera6891 3 years ago 4
I did one of the Assembly (when everyone first meets everyone), but NBC Universal did not like it...clearly they had some of the dialogue tagged in that scene. Oh well...even using little segments like I do, I don't want to upset them. So my next one will now be Mr. Wickham's tale...aside from it taking place outside in the 2005 version, there are great similarities in the dialogue, but great differences in the demeanor of the actors/actresses.
