  • Woot! Disc Golfer here...

  • MIKECNW, I said it was the boomers' parents, who were in charge of the media, not having any sense of history when it came to preserving TV history. It wasn't until the 1970's, when the oldest boomers started becoming nostalgic for anything from their youth, that tapes of TV shows (mainly variety, talk shows, music shows) began to be saved on a regular basis (the news divisions being a very notable exception, & of course filmed shows).

  • too cool!

  • Meant to add, yes, most New York "Tonight Shows" were erased (the generation before the baby boomers had no idea how nostalgic boomers would be as adults). My guess: Headrick or his family aimed a home movie camera at their TV to film this.

  • What do you mean by not having any idea about baby boomers not having any idea how nostalgic they'd be later on?

  • Educated guess: Headrick invented the Frisbee in 1964 & was demonstrating this new product to Johnny. Also, the bandleader was Skitch Henderson, who left in 1967, and judging by the length of Johnny's hair & his suit, I'd say about 1965.

  • Wow, everything from Johnny Carson's New York era is rare footage indeed! Do you know which year this is from?
