Can't believe a guy in those days would have left the puke on the floor all night for the help to clean up, rather than just clean it up himself before it got all hard and gross. I'm glad we're a bit more self-sufficient now, especially since I know by experience that getting drunk at Oxford is still a LOT of fun :)
Next to James Earl Jones, Jeremy Iron's is my second favorite voice of all time. Third would be Sir Lawrence Olivier and Stephen Fry, forth. Orson Wells also had a beautiful voice. Marlon Brando. :) I'm on a roll. lol
This clip shows that many aspects of student life never change. If you watch my video "A look inside Hertford College, Oxford" you will hear me make reference to the somewhat gross moment in this clip. I wonder how many Oxford students in the past 30 years have had too much to drink and then gone and vomited through a ground floor window in Exeter College because of this scene.
2:18 Should we say then "Chance is the very basic principal to our lives in this rational Universe" ..Just then Sebastian pops his head in Charles' window and the rest is history.
@ariellaserafina Yes,'' I, Claudius'' was another epic & legendary serial at the time. I read the book, and the sequel to the book (covered by the serial of course) ''Claudius the God'' - both very good reads! :)
@MrsJosephMerrick Oh. I read the first years ago. Have it around here somewhere but didn't know there was a second. Good to know. Thanks Mrs. Read anything good lately? I'm desperate for something well written. Preferably historical but anything. . Anyone? :) Songs
@Songsmirth If you like history and a VERY romantic read( I presume you are a woman), you should try the ANGELIQUE series of books by Serge and Anne GOLON. They were written in late 50's, early 60's(?) and I think you may only be able to get them in English in libraries, as theyre not in current print - but worth the search. I read them all. The hero, Joffrey de Peyrac, is the romantic, swashbuckling, passionate yet sensitive hero we've always dreamed of! There are films too, but only in French.
@Songsmirth There are little clips and photos on utube - with the lovely romantic music from the film.:) Unfortunately no ones posted a complete film yet. The first is the best. Robert Hossein plays Joffrey. Michelle Mercier, Angelique.
Thank you so much for uploading this, not only am I re watching this classic but remember friends I use to watch it with weekly a long time ago, when first broadcast. It hasn't lost its charm..

Hmmm...never realized before that Collins is babbling about chance in a rational universe right when Sebastian appears at the window. Very nice touch.
@lizclegg Charles isn`t gay.His homosexuality is the result of the all male enviroment of the boarding school and the deep separation of his class between male and female. Many young men away from home and no female company to speak of,their sexual awakening comes hampered by the lack thereof. They have seen this kind of togetherness displayed by the older boys and in the flush of sexuality emulate this. After leaving the school this tends to drop away.
@sahajad I refer you to my explanation below.Yes he has a sexual relationship with Sebastian, and it is hinted that he has done so before. But for Charles it is institutional in form-like jail and the military. That`s not to say that with Sebastian he is only sexually attracted-far from it.It is clear that with Sebastian,Charles has found his first true love. His time with Julia is bound to Sebastian. She is him in female form, but not enough for them to stay together.
Still I must say that Charles was a Bi- sexual since he got married later as well. Only Bi-sexuals can do that .They can have an affiar with a man but still get married to a woman ! Sebastian could not have done it. Later in life too he took up with a German man !
But Charles wanted to marry Julia as well, but it was she who let him down ! May be becuase she knew that he would be always interested in Sebastian !
I would argue that this is not a case of a labeling of physical attractions but more of a meeting of souls. For Charles I honestly believe this was a case of amicitia, the Shakespearean equivalent of male/male soulmate. I believe we have to look at sexual identity differently when viewed through a historical lens. While Sebastion's persuasion was rather limited, I would say that Charles was torn between Sebastion and his doppleganger and what each represented, which is why he was left fruitless
I am contradicting your statement which you had posted 4 days ago. You have mentioned that Charles's sexuality is a result of by being closeted with males in the University . But aren't all the other students in this same position ? But this does not mean that all other students have sexual relations with other males. Only some of them turn on to be like that !
You too have mentioned here that Charles has had similar relationships like that before.
@sahajad Ah,I see.The homosexual behaviour isn`t started in uni,it starts with Boarding School and the strict separation of male and female of his class.I refer you to the Lindsay Anderson movie "IF" for this minor theme of male coupling. And,again,it is a minority who try it.At the time of the novel, the presence of women at college was limited-as demonstrated when Sebastian first takes Charles to Brideshead.
@sahajad So,university of the period isn`t were it starts. After uni. they begin going their separate ways-Charles to Paris and Sebastian to the prison of Brideshead and its warden,Lady Marchmain.
What a pretty speech Sebastian's friend makes ....."wasn't the quality or the quantity of the wines but the mixture"..such an enigmatic phrase sets the tone for the rest the plot.
@tvaddict69 sebastian is quite a character and lives his life according to his own rules no mater what anyone else thinks so you got to respect that. I think that is why jeremy is drawn to him because he is intrigued by him.

Such an eloquent speech - begging forgiveness for his friend: "to understand all is to forgive all"
But the face at 3:28 is just thinking 'He just vomited through my window onto my floor!"
That scene makes me laugh every time I read or watch it.

Plover's eggs are the eggs of plover birds, small wading birds that exist in Europe.
The eggs have long been considered an expensive delicacy like truffles.
jdollinter 8 months ago
What are, "lovers eggs?" Did I get that right? Looks like boiled eggs to me.
Songsmirth 8 months ago
@Songsmirth "Plovers' eggs". They do look like smaller boiled eggs.

In which case the university environment was not to be blamed, then.
Anyway after leaving univeristy both Charles and Sebastian had continued with this kind of relationship as well.
