Vawaia Song: Introduction

উত্তর বঙ্গে ভাওয়া কথাটির অর্থ হলো নদীর বিশাল চরের নলখাগড়া ঘাসযুক্ত ভুমি।ভাওয়া বা চরে অস্থায়ী বাথান বা ঘর বেঁধে রাখালরা মহিষ চরাতো।ভাওয়া-তে বসে গাওয়া গান ভাও্য়াইয়া গান বলে কিছু গবেষক মনে করেন।

বেশ কিছু জনপ্রিয় গান আমরা শুনেছি কিন্তু এগুলি যে ভাওয়াইয়া তা খেয়াল করে দেখিনি,যেমন- ১ নদিতে না যাইও রে বৈদ্...ঘোলা পানি ২ ভালো করিয়া বাজানরে দোতারা সুন্দরী কমলায় নাচে। ৩ কি ও বন্ধু কাজল ভ্রমরারে ...কয়া যান রে ।

এ জাতীয় গানে ওই অঞ্চলের ভাষার প্রভাব লক্ষণীয়।

What is Vawaia Song ? ভাওয়াইয়া গান পরিচিতি

ভাও+ইয়া= ভাওয়াইয়া। ভাব শব্দটি ই বিভিন্ন অঞ্চলের ভাষায় ভাও হিসেবে ব্যবহৃত হয়। এর সাথে ইয়া প্রত্যয় যুক্ত করে ভাওয়াইয়া শব্দটি এসেছে। অর্থাৎ ভাবের গান। ভাব অর্থ প্রেম, ভালবাসা আবার মিলমিশ বা মেলামেশাও হয়।

বাংলাদেশের রংপুর, দিনাজপুর, বগুড়া, রাজশাহী অঞ্চলে এবং আসাম ও পশ্চিম বঙ্গের কিছু অংশের প্রধানতঃ আঞ্চলিক ভাষায় বিশেষ ধরনের সুরে এটা গাওয়া হয়। বহু ধরনের ভাওয়াইয়া গান হয়। মইষালি(মহিষ), চিতান, গড়ান, রংপুরি, কুচবিহারি, চটকা ইত্যাদি। See post-2

What is Vawaia ? Vaw+ya=Vawaia (ভাও+ইয়া= ভাওয়াইয়া)

Vawaia or Bhaoaya is a traditional folk song of North Bengal region of Bangladesh & parts of West Bengal and Assam of India. Vawaia has it's own unique melody, most of it has its own local slung language within the lyrics. Abbas Uddin Ahmed was a lgendary singer and his brother Abdul Karim was a popular writer of Vawaia song. The subjets of vawaia are endless,suh as--Cart driver, Buffallow,Sorrow & happyness,love life of rural girls etc.Thanks

@lalshapla I did not know that "Bhawaiya" word was originated from either "Bhab" or "Bhawa". This info will be really useful for the readers here like me. Many many thanks for writing it in beautiful bengali language. Personally I believe that everything is for human beings. If people love something, then go with it.

Breathtaking. I am lost for words. How the every words in the song celebrates people's longing for love.

One question. Is this from our one and only the great nozrul, or is there another nozrul. As I haven't heard polligeeti type of songs from the great nozrul.

@jahan442 Thanks. This song was written by Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam for Abbasuddin. Abbasuddin and his family were migrated from Coachbihar. The tune of this song presumably was taken from a bhawaiya song of Coachbihar. Well, I can say that Ferdousi Rahman is the best folk singer of Bangladesh. Ferdousi Rahman sings this song much better than anybody else. This lyrics shows the strength of Kazi Nazrul's writing.

@lalshapla Belated "Happy Birthday" to you Anwar Bhai. Sorry! I am late to greet you. Thanks for the info about this song. "Nodir nam soi kochua" - I never heard this song. It sounds like a Bhawaiya song from Coachbihar. Abbasuddin, Mustofa Zaman Abbasi, Ferdousi Rahman & Nasheed Kaml - all were fostering the Jolpaiguri & Coachbihar's tradition.

'Nodir nam Kochua' was the original song, But before recorded it was blessed by Kazi Nazrul & became'Nodir nam Onjona'.So therefore it is not possible that we hear it. But Abbas Uddin mentioned the background story of this song in his Auto-biography 'amar shilpi jiboner kotha'.

Vawaia tradition is from entire North Bengal region which is, Rongpur,Dinajpur, Rajshahi of Bangladesh and Jolpaiguri,Kuchbihar (W.bengal) also Gual para of Assam,India.
