  • few things I found wrong with his form... a. hes lifting his head off the bench... this takes away from the tightness in your lats that you need for exploding at the bottom

    b. his elbows weren't flared, but they weren't tucked really either...

    c. he should drive his shoulders/traps into the back of the bench by pushing off the floor with his feet on the ground.. he wouldn't be able to do this with his feet the way they were in this video

  • yo man cud you help me. basically my technique is like... keep my shoulder blades tucked back, feet planted on the floor firmly, head doesnt ever leave the bench, hands in the normal position. BUT, every now and again, when i start a set after jus a couple of reps my shoulder (normally left, somtimes both) fucking hurts like hell, not cos it cant lift any more, jus... gets a sharp pain

  • the sharpness maybe because of your form, but correcting your form alone might not aleviate the problem immediately.. you may want to take a light week (around 50% of your 1rm) and do 3 sets of 10 reps with that weight or something.. I always found that when I alternate rep ranges I stay fresh.. a sharp pain could be a pinched nerve, it could be anything.. depends on where the sharp pain is.. it could be your delts? I suggest you try what I suggested though

  • man shut up, or post a video showing your technique. brian dobson been training for years, hes done powerlifting and bodybuilding. i would take his advice over yours

  • Dave Tate from westside barbell who can bench 700lb+ uses that foot technique (heel off the ground), I am not sure that its bad or anything... he always sends confusing mixed messages in his bp videos. I know what ur saying tho, good points.

  • You have thumbs for a reason.. so use them. Also, the bar should be in allignment with the elbow and his hands should not be bent like that. Also, the J-Hooks should be shallow enough that he doesn't have to extend to lift the weight... ruins the tightness. Okay video though, guaranteed they know this stuff.. just didnt mention it.

  • smith machine is the worst thing you can do, grab a spotter off the floor, make sure they dont touch the bar, high set, low rep.

  • I'm a junior powerlifter in UK so might be a bit different but rules over here is feet flat on floor and no movement of feet or head while lifting. Bar must also stop on your chest (which you can raise by arching your back-not cheating)

  • arching is when you use your legs to push your self and gives a boost; its cheating like bouncing the bar on your chest, hes holding for wide grip. for grip, you can either put index, middle or pinky there on the soft metal part. He put it on his middle finger cuz he's bigger.

  • its not cheating at all. All the professional powerlifters bench like this. Arching the back shortens the distance the bar has the travel. and putting the legs bent like that gives you power to drive through you legs.

  • The hand grip isn't "incorrect" it's just not the one most people opt to use. It's a thumbs under grip (aka suicide grip) and most people in the know will argue it is better from a technique point of view (although not for safety). That's not to say either one is actually "correct" - this one just stops your flexors and extensors working against eachother.

  • lol not many people wanna be like that. Strength training is just a tool for building muscle - it doesn't mean everyone who does it ends up looking like a fat powerlifter.

  • not ALL powerlifters are fat. The ones at my gym in fact are ripped to the teeth. The reason why some of them are fat is bc they never work thier abs or do cardio to compensate all the calories and supplements they take. Natural lifters (like me) tend to be leaner.

  • Why can't powerlifters be "natural" too. They don't have to be juicing to earn the title powerlifter. They get the rep of being fat because the ultimate aim of powerlifting is to lift as heavy as possible. Cutting and defining is more effort than it's worth for that purpose.

  • I...don't know what to say. To compensate for all the supplements they take?  Work their ABS? Try doing some dealifts and overhead squats and tell me your abs aren't worked. and to any uninformed readers, no amount of ab work will get you shredded. Proper diet and HIIT will. Powerlifters tend to be at high bodyfat percentages because they choose to eat more than they need to feed their muscles so as to get the very most out of their lifts. The main picture is strength for them.

  • Man wtf are you talking about? Deadlifts work your lower back, not your abs. Lol I wanna see a powerlifter or even a bodybuilder do windshield wipers, that would be impressive.

  • Powerlifters not working abs? All powerlifters trains abs, and many of them does some cardio, but they eat more calories than they burn, så they get fat(me included:D).

  • well if you get a good suicide grip (no thumbs) there is nothing to worry about, and it actually helps your bench, your thumbs will get your forearms in there, making alot more of the tention on your forearms, and less on your chest.
