@johnparkimp3 Finally someone I can talk to about driving these things. I'm hoping to get into driving these things. I've already sent an application off for driving passenger services in Auckland so fingers crossed I suppose.
Also, probably a bit excessive using a DX to haul 4 wagons. A DC would suffice easily for that, or even a shunter
You've done it again Geoff. I drove on the Napier Gisborne line and this really brings back memories of the Waikokopu to Beach Loop section. Pity the DX doesn't have much freight behind the drawbar but at least it's keeping the line open? Or have the politicians scuttled it by now? I'm out of the loop living in OZ.
@johnparkimp3 - still open, but only used once a week now, sometimes twice. A huge decline from the 1990's, and KiwiRail have said they may close it in 2012 if they can't find more tonnage.
Yes, New Zealand. That particular line is between Napier and Gisborne and includes many tunnels and tall viaducts in very rugged terrain, some inland, and some with coastal views over the Pacific. It's my favourite line, scenery-wise!
A decade ago this line was carrying a daily train of anywhere between 20 and 50 cars, double-headed. Today it carries one train a week, from 2 to 12 cars long. Politics and economics make it cheaper for the rail company to truck most freight on the highway instead, although there have also been some industrial closures resulting in loss of freight. Back in 1985 the line had 8 freights and 2 passenger trains a day! Hard to believe now.

It's unfortunate, but this video has a certain air about it, as to the state of our rail network :(
