Barry never died on me.

I think all you have to do to keep him alive is choose the "cover me" option in the underground passage.

Anyway to answer your question, you can have two extra survivors with each character. You can have Jill and Rebbecca with Chris (just imagine that threesome XD), or Chris and Barry with Jill. In Jill's game, Rebbecca is unaccounted for. Same for Barry in Chris' game.
