Claire is an excellent actress and IMHO Temple is her life-part. I've got an autistic member in the farther family and I can say she's very convincing - her gestures, stance, facial expressions, mood alternations, panic attacks ... she deserves an award, no doubt.
I am very happy to see the vidoe Inspiring Speech About Learning Differently Temple Grandin Autism from you, hopefully the others also are happy for You
Wow watching this at work isn't helpful I got a lump in my throat and started crying my son is up for an evaluation soon and he needs to be rocked to a point were he can focus and be somewhat normal usually turns in circles non stop doesn't call me Mom or talk he is 2 years old I need to rent this movie as a Mom with a child in DT OT and ST it is tough to understand your child... I am so glad in this scene they didn't discriminate against her It would've broke my heart.
I just cried and cried. It is so true. I am not dumb or stupid, I just think a little slowly. And I have the short term memory of a goldfish. However, I do have the long term memory of a scorned woman.
I can sort of understand what she means about the rocking and other self-stimulation habits of autistic people. I'm not autistic but I do have some degree of ADHD, even more so when I was a kid. In my free time sometimes I would spin around or walk around with my head back facing the sky because it felt comforting in a way and helped me focus my nervous energy. Adults and other kids thought I was a weirdo but it helped me to calm down when I felt like an energy bomb with nowhere to explode.
I used to walk in circles and look at the ground and that helps - my brain stops going all over the damn place but now music and pacing work and thought organization comes easier - my husband has to massage my whole body every day - feels nice and helps me calm down but I was misdiagnosed as mildly retarded - I'm currently writing my Masters on the cognitive process dealing with special needs children and how they interpret literature and communication.
Admirable. This is PGTC. So: GPTB - Genetic Program Trend Behavior. I'm glad that people like Dr. Temple is duly honored. I am Brazilian and I know how much the world needs as it references.
I don't know how she gets any work. She mocks every character she plays and panders to her audience as if asking "Do you get it? Do you get what I'm doing? Do you see why I did this?"
@Thomasveach95 I have seen Temple Grandin in person and watched most of her talks on the internet. So don't fucking tell me "the more you learn" you ignorant piece of shit. Claire Danes is a cowardly actress, she has no courage to really immerse in a character and wastes the opportunity every time. I know what I'm fucking talking about, limp dick.
@Sei1863 Do you have autism? I do, and it was pretty realistic. And while I do believe you met her, you didn't meet her when she was young? She acted a lot different. She wants hugs instead of panicking and using a machine. My parents, both hardened and never cry cried to this for her performance because people who are autistic or live with one can truely understand her character. Besides, cussing makes you look more moronic, just to let you know.
You know, I think that we exclude people because of what they are not who they are. We have to learn to treat everybody the same in this world, and it will be much better.
I think a key person is being passed over here; Temple's mother, Eustacia. If it was not for Eustacia's care, guidance and love, Temple may have not understood what she can as well as she does. Autistic kids NEED the care and understanding of their parents to make it through the difficulty of being different, NOT LESS!!!

@virginiatechfanx you are just getting it wrong. that face shows the love of a mother who is so proud of having a child like that. you totally missed the point
@virginiatechfanx - Obviously you do not have a child with Autism. If you did, you would realize Temple's speech was a thank you to her mother and an inspiration to everyone in the room. You misread the director's objective which was to show that autistic children are just as thankful to their parents and mentors as "normal" children! Stick to something you KNOW!
I met Temple at this age. She had designed a cattle handling facility & was interesting. We knew she was different and she told us she was; most realized she was gifted to understanding things we could not see, like the way shadows made cattle stop, or how well they moved in a circle. We noticed, but never put it all together; she did. Although I met & spoke with her a dozen times spending hours with us, last year she could not recall meeting me. I did not know why then - now I do.

This clip highlights her superior performance that should win her the Emmy award for best actress. As the father of an autistic child, I have never seen a better characterization of an autistic child.
That was so powerful it knocked my off my chair! BRILLIANT. !!!
