  • Something for the weekend. Some Catholic angst perhaps? Love this.

  • @lyndseykramer His Father is an Anglican bishop, so it's probably not CATHOLIC angst.

  • ok, the story of this song - as far as i can work it out - bloke has his mistress hiding in the wood shed (his wife cam,e home early), his wife twigs, forces him to go and calm her concerns that there's 'something in there'. he goes in, gets whacked - his wife had been having it away with the same woman, has planned this scenario all along, she and her girl lover robs the guy and leaves him 'gagged and bound...' and go off with 'his car and all his money'... something like that.

  • Yikes! I've got to give you top grade for cleverness, but I think - at least the lyric seems to read this way- that his little something for the weekend turns out to be after his money and his car. His sin, his journey into adultery gets put to a quick end.

  • written12 - excellent!

  • There is no reference for adultery. No reference for the marital status of the victim as far as I could understand.

  • I see your point. I was going on the section where he says he's pretending, where something in his jeans prevents him from coming clean. But also, the phrase "something for the weekend" sounds like a guy rationalizing cheating on his wife- or girlfriend.

But looking over the lyrics, I do see your point. You might very well be right. I guess somebody out there will have to hunt down Stephen's - God,I forgot his last name- intended meaning.

  • You have also a strong point !

The composer and singer is Neil Hannon I think.

  • something for the weekend is an old expression used when a man went to the barbers where they would sell condoms, but instead of asking for condoms they would ask for something for the weekend.

  • Thanks for that fact. So, in other words, the song could be just about some guy trying to make some woman- a casual fling, a tryst- and not some guy cheating on his wife. At the same time, there are a bunch of lines in the song in which the guy's trying to convince himself there's nothing wrong with what he's doing. That is, he is straying but it's excusable. Anyway, a great song.

  • @written12 "something for the weekend" refers to when guys in England used to buy ondoms from the barbershop, to save embarrassment in front of other customers the phrased question " something for the weekend, sir?" was asked.

But in all honesty, its just a great song, enjoy it for what it is without too much indepth psychoanalysis

  • filthy old lab ;). Just look to the right... lol.

  • i think i'd like to be gagged and bound and left for dead

  • Never knew it had a sinister ending until now. Extra sweet!

  • It's a great touch, isn't it?

  • this song is fantastic, loving it

  • luv this song, haven't heard it in years. reminds me of being a tweenager again.

  • j'adore !

  • i remember hearing this song when i was a little kid. my dad use to play it over and over in the car, just listning to it now remindes me of all the country roads we use to drive down and all the places we use to go. iv always liked this song and to me they seem a little under rated, whenever i ask someone "do u like the divine comedy?" there all like "who??" but anyways awsome bad and an awsome song.

  • u dam right! lol

  • It's sad that they are under rated. I love the divine comedy so much. And Neil hannon is such a lovely guy

  • Great band...Great song.....Girl singer...cutie, who is she?

  • It's a guy... Neil Hannon...

  • Lol, I think he's asking about the backing vocalist (who is indeed a cutie). Hope so anyway...

  • great performance

    thanks for uploading this!
