I think the movie is fine, even enjoyable but it is not a highly violent, macho film. It would do better to market itself as a good kids film, a prequet to King Arthur, if you will. Colin Firth is of course excellent, as is Thomas Sangster. See it, but don't expect Troy.

Yes, I agree with medallish, the film is terribal, apart for Colin Firth. The book to what it's inspired is beautiful. It's The Last Legion of Valerio Massimo Manfredi. Read it!

I would say don't watch this movie, I've seen it, and it's the kind of movie that follows a typical hollywood model. It even has that as southpark points out a "black man to sacrifice himself" I thought this movie sucked, you don't feel for any of the characters, and the kid's annoying. Normally when a movie sucks I can rely on action, but even that sucks in this movie.

Lots of people sacrifice themselves in this movie -- for their friends, for their emperor, or for an ideal. Batiatus dies to protect his friend and comrade in arms, Demetrius. Vatrenus dies to protect the kid. And so on. Why insist on trivializing characters you clearly don't understand?

Wait so I don't understand the characters and so I can't point out how way to hollywood'esque this movie is? my main issue isn't the sacrifice, but it's one issue that I think is valid, but it's a boring movie, and non of the characters are likeable, there's some love interest between two characters in it and it might as well not be there because it's about as fake as the movie itself.
