Primus does suck... it had been a while since I listened to any of their stuff.. so I figured I better listen again.. they still suck to me. Just because there are a bunch of guys making noise with instruments, and a guy making noises with "vocals", doesn't mean they are good... but it does mean that somewhere, somehow... people will love pure dog-shit, because its not "normal", and outside of the box.

@notoncemoreagain I suppose Primus is best described as alien--a foreign land for your musical ear to explore. The realm of normal being your suit. And once on this planet of Primus, you ask yourself why everybody else isn't wearing a suit. It takes the ability to remove your notions of normalcy and definition of "good music" to experience Primus, to breathe Primus air and live to tell about it in a way people like you, those watching from the space station, won't ever understand.

@ThePsychoMike I in no way was saying I don't like things that are outside of a box and not normal. I was saying that I simply think people like Primus because they are so un-normal. The music seems devoid of any real pleasing patterns, and the vocals are nothing shy of horrible. I am granting you the fact that the band is full of talented musicians; but I simply think that the followers of the band like it for the shock value. Some people thrive on loving things that create shock value.

@notoncemoreagain What makes Primus weird is the fact that they don't have any specific genre. Listen to some more of their music. Positively metal songs like Anti-Pop stand in contrast to tunes like Duchess and the Proverbial Mind Spread. Metal meets funk, meets alternative, meets rap (looking at you, Bodacious), meets carnival music to make something that's musically complex as well as just plain funky.

@ThePsychoMike In addition: Primus music is sound, musically. Les' basslines are certainly funky, non-traditional and oftentimes crazy complicated but whatever outrageous timing he's using, he sticks with, as does Jay Lane. Ler's playing is a little like Buckethead's in the sense that he uses strange scales and chords to make cynical, almost-whimsical-sounding lines.
