"Is there any title connected with your job?...But it's a job women do" And not a single guffaw or chuckle or titter from the audience. I love Arlene's wit, but it's pretty hilarious to have the psychological boundaries of the time laid out so transparently. Funny how the coarsening of entertainment over the years may have dulled some facets of our irony receptors just as it sharpened others.
Yes, I think the late 50s fashion and hair and make up style suited Arlene and Dorothy very much and they do both look beautiful here. Arlene's charm, humour and down- to- earth nature made her beautiful inside and out.
Everything's big in Texas. Daly, I hear, stood 6 feet, and Colonel Henderson stands eye-to- eye with him.
Gil Fates wrote that he found the military public relations officers particularly useful in finding, bringing, or suggesting interesting amusing contestants in uniform.
Freeze at 0:24 -- and note how compare-contrast humor works in WML: I don't know about you, but "marines" doesn't come to my mind first looking at her.
I love those big collars popular in the late 1950s early 60s.
Indeed! Dorothy always played with the fullest intention to guess the guest(s/job). In most of the episodes you see her making notes too, must be her journalistic nature ;)
i agree!!! Dorothy is my favourite! there are several episodes where she is so adorable. Like when her father was a mystery guest, and when she guest him, she sooo girly afterwards..lol
Dorothy is my favourite too although I love all of the regular panelists. I think Dorothy and Arlene played really well off each other and their contrasting personalities complemented each other perfectly.
Great shoulders, Arlenes has! (I'm a girl and the remark is not meant to be sexist, just plain stating of fact!)

I wonder if Camp Henderson on "Gomer Pyle, USMC" was named after the Colonel ...?

@terentii Camp Henderson is not a real Marine base.

@darkwood777 No kidding?!? You mean, they'd put something on TV if it weren't for-real?!? OH-MY-GOD!!! :-O

How hilarious. We have a guest in the military and back then it was mostly men...and the comments are on who pretty the women panelists are. Shame.

@inqueling I think Arlene was trying to find an occupation, with a title, which was restricted mostly to women.

I've seen every WML episode on You Tube and I don't remember Arlene looking more beautiful than she does here.

all of the panelists have such enthusiasm for the game, but i find dorothy's absolutely pixieish.

Yes, you are spot on. Dorothy is adorable and almost schoolgirlish in her enthusiasm and mannerisms when she guesses correctly.
