As an agnostic myself, I'm going to have to disagree. He's absolutely right. Without religion (at that time), it would be the strongest men killing and ruling over the weak. Religion certainly has it's evolutionary benefits. That said, I would agree with you in present day and argue that those evolutionary benefits have come and passed.

That's a bit of a generalization. People do a lot of bad in the name of religion, but they also do a lot of good. You're much better off criticizing certain types of people and their interpretation of beliefs than whole belief systems in general.
