I am doing a Research Writing class in which my final project that is due in a little over 4 weeks from now, is a persuasive essay about the Northern Ireland Conflict. So far all the research I did was pointing toward a religious cause for the conflict. So that is what I based my thesis on at the time. Now, I understand from watching these videos that the conflict was political and that the religious aspect was just a coincidence.
The religion angle is a red herring really. Take the great men of Irish history---Wolfe Tone, Henry Joy McCracken, etc. They were all Protestants who believed in a united Ireland. The political dimensions and ancient wrongs remembered (i.e. a very strong historical memory is present in Ireland) are at the core. I have my opinions and sympathies but both sides make compelling arguments. That's why this hasn't been solved over the last 800 years!
This is clearly extremely biased, but it's absolutely fascinating. A perspective not often seen in my part of the world. Thanks so much for posting it!

I am doing a Research Writing class in which my final project that is due in a little over 4 weeks from now, is a persuasive essay about the Northern Ireland Conflict. So far all the research I did was pointing toward a religious cause for the conflict. So that is what I based my thesis on at the time. Now, I understand from watching these videos that the conflict was political and that the religious aspect was just a coincidence.

The religion angle is a red herring really. Take the great men of Irish history---Wolfe Tone, Henry Joy McCracken, etc. They were all Protestants who believed in a united Ireland. The political dimensions and ancient wrongs remembered (i.e. a very strong historical memory is present in Ireland) are at the core. I have my opinions and sympathies but both sides make compelling arguments. That's why this hasn't been solved over the last 800 years!
