My understanding of the situation is this: the Poles had an obsolescent air force and no real armored units. At the time the German armored divisions had quite primitive equipment, for example their light tank was armed with machine guns only. Nevertheless they were able to defeat the Poles without too much trouble. It is true that certain Polish units attained local superiority, but in general the performance of the Wehrmacht in Case White was effective. I do not slight the Poles as soldiers.

The Poles had tiny airforce compared to the Germans and outclassed but not totally outdated fighters, note they had the most advanced tactical bomber in Europe of 1939 the PZL37. They had 1/3 the amount of the armour that Germany did, however their armour was vastly superior, the 7TP was the 1st diesel tank and 2nd best tank in Europe at the time after the Czech 38t

Your point about the various weapons is correct, but I am not sure that the Germans considered the Polish campaign more difficult than the French. At least I know that Von Mellenthin, Halder, and Rommel did not, to the best of my recollection. Btw did the Germans make use of the 7TP? Didn't they use the chassis for AGs? I never heard of them using the PZL37, I might recall a story that a flight of them escaped to UK?

In 1948 at the Moscow Show trials thousands of Poles were condemned to death for collaborating with the Nazis, all the charges were fictitious, they were made to dress in German uniforms that didn't even fit.
Poland was made to pay for Germany's war right up until 1989.

Contrary to popular belief the Polish Army did stop the Wehrmacht around Lvov-Sandomierz, where General Sosnkowski succesfully defeated two advancing German armies that could advance no further due to the losses sustained in such a short time.
Then Russia attacked from the rear and it was all over. It's estimated Poland would have lasted at least 2-3 more months without the Russian rear attack.
@thrombox: The Russians violated the Molotov-Ribbentrop by invading late, letting the Germans take most of Poland's resistance and avoid it themselves. In addition, nothing came up in my search for the incident you mentioned, in fact, the Polish wikipedia mentions his "String of victorious battles" but upon further research, these battles never existed. The Wehrmacht had it's way with the Polish Army. There's no doubt about that.
Poland had no voice after the war, she was silenced by her Western Allies and by the Soviet occupiers.

It is written by American authors published in the UK, read it and then ask me if I am in Polands arse, it's not a long book and is an enjoyable read.

Norman Davies is the British historian who specialises in central Europe including Poland and is de facto regarded as the worlds foremost historian in this field. Olson and Cloud are two independent US writers, both sources write without bias, unlike so many so called "unbiased" German historians, if there are any.

The Polish Government provoked the German minority, in a more or less likely scale as the Germans provoked the Jews - By killing them. The German minority, especially in Warsaw, was overwhelmingly threatened by the Polish Government, and pretty much had nothing to do.

Sam Peckinpah surely was on of the best and most original filmmakers of the last 50 years - and immensely underappreciated by Hollywood. Shows once again that innovation, originality and creativity in film have always come from Europe (France, Italy), Asia (Japan) or from outsiders in the US (like Peckinpah or Tarantino) - but never from Hollywood......

My understanding of the situation is this: the Poles had an obsolescent air force and no real armored units. At the time the German armored divisions had quite primitive equipment, for example their light tank was armed with machine guns only. Nevertheless they were able to defeat the Poles without too much trouble. It is true that certain Polish units attained local superiority, but in general the performance of the Wehrmacht in Case White was effective. I do not slight the Poles as soldiers.

@lebarosky Based on any actual book reading or hearsay? The Poles had tiny airforce compared to the Germans and outclassed but not totally outdated fighters, note they had the most advanced tactical bomber in Europe of 1939 the PZL37. They had 1/3 the amount of the armour that Germany did, however their armour was vastly superior, the 7TP was the 1st diesel tank and 2nd best tank in Europe at the time after the Czech 38t
Poland was not as an easy kill as Hitler expected, much harder than France

Your point about the various weapons is correct, but I am not sure that the Germans considered the Polish campaign more difficult than the French. At least I know that Von Mellenthin, Halder, and Rommel did not, to the best of my recollection. Btw did the Germans make use of the 7TP? Didn't they use the chassis for AGs? I never heard of them using the PZL37, I might recall a story that a flight of them escaped to UK?

Once you're done with that if you'd like to delve further there are a host of English & American writers of WW2 history that I can recommend, I think you may be pleasantly suprised.

@b52gf16c Poland was invaded by Germany and Russia together. Millions of Poles were deported to Siberia and executed in places like Katyn by Russians. In 1948 at the Moscow Show trials thousands of Poles were condemned to death for collaborating with the Nazis, all the charges were fictitious, they were made to dress in German uniforms that didn't even fit.
Poland was made to pay for Germany's war right up until 1989.

@Schmidtah Where did you get this notion from? Ever heard of the Molotov-Ribbentrop pact? Contrary to popular belief the Polish Army did stop the Wehrmacht around Lvov-Sandomierz, where General Sosnkowski succesfully defeated two advancing German armies that could advance no further due to the losses sustained in such a short time.
Then Russia attacked from the rear and it was all over. It's estimated Poland would have lasted at least 2-3 more months without the Russian rear attack.

@thrombox: The Russians violated the Molotov-Ribbentrop by invading late, letting the Germans take most of Poland's resistance and avoid it themselves. In addition, nothing came up in my search for the incident you mentioned, in fact, the Polish wikipedia mentions his "String of victorious battles" but upon further research, these battles never existed. The Wehrmacht had it's way with the Polish Army. There's no doubt about that.

Initially Polish 900+ years ago, Poland broke into several Duchies temporarily, it then became an independant duchy, inherited by the King of Bohemia and then dropped to the Hapsburgs and became part of the Austrian Empire. Frederick II of Prussia falsely claimed it and seized it in 1742, in the late 19th C it was ruthlessly Germanised.

Norman Davies is the British historian who specialises in central Europe including Poland and is de facto regarded as the worlds foremost historian in this field. Olson and Cloud are two independent US writers, both sources write without bias, unlike so many so called "unbiased" German historians, if there are any.

After World War 1 the Poles guaranteed that no Germans in Poland would lose their jobs or property this included state jobs where previous positions were held.
The German government on the otherhand pursued ruthless policies even before Hitler took power such as the wholescale theft and stripping of Polish private property and industry when the German army was pushed out of Poland at the end of WW1

Is this movie accurate? My uncle's a Wehrmacht Infantrymen reenactor and he says this movie's cool (I can tell Lol) but I'm not sure how he feels about it being realistic.

@kurbeladler Gottfried, meine Ansicht zu dem amerikanischen Schauspieler mache ich nicht davon abhängig, ob sie Dir gefällt. Gerade der Träger eines EK1 hat es nicht nötig, sich derart in Szene zu setzen. Unabhängig davon würden zumindest zwei von diesem Typen zu verantwortende Begebenheiten während der damaligen Zeit sicher zu einem Kriegsgerichtsverfahren führen. Und das zurecht.

Every studio boss in Hollywood should be beaten with a club for what they did to this great director. Sam Peckinpah surely was on of the best and most original filmmakers of the last 50 years - and immensely underappreciated by Hollywood. Shows once again that innovation, originality and creativity in film have always come from Europe (France, Italy), Asia (Japan) or from outsiders in the US (like Peckinpah or Tarantino) - but never from Hollywood......

@AngelosWins Did I deny that? I even explicitly mentioned the US, so what are you accusing me of? I said that Hollywood (meaning big mainstream film studios) does not look good when it comes to innovation (ie in style of filming, lighting, cutting, story telling, use of music/sound), not the US film industry in general. Small, but significant difference. The ones who brought such innovations (like Peckinpah) were almost always persona non grata in Hollywood.
