it sounds sad when mariah carey sings it. they both put a lot of emotion in it, but i think mariah carey really would make someone sad just listening to her version.
I love both versions of this song. I don't think Mariah strays that far from the original version. She just adds her own flavor which is good, because you can go to a karoake bar to hear someone attempt an exact replica of the original song but a true artist makes a cover their own.

The original is always best. And those who are bashing Journey - if they weren't a great band, other singers wouldn't singing their songs.
I'm not a fan of Mariah Carey, but I sorta like this version... minus the airy parts of the song. That's the main reason why I don't like in her voice, the airiness. Sorry.
Other than that, awesome video. :)

Idk, the chords and instrumental just seem so commercialized in comparison to Journey's! Or could it just be me and my perceptions getting in the way of things.

I grew up listening to this version, so, it's natural that I prefer this version. This version of the song, to me, sounds much better than the original. I'm so sorry, but that's what I feel. :)

Hahahaha that's why she's a superstar and a legend. That's why she's the best selling female artist of all time. That's why she has many hits. I know Journey originally wrote this.. Who cares they suck get over it.

@tree224331 The best selling female artist of all time debate is tricky. Worldwide sales aren't always reliable, but it has been reported several times that both women have sold around 200 million records total. If the answer is Madonna, it isn't by a whole lot.

I see how many people believe that the original version is better. As a Mariah fan, I would have to say, i love this version over the crappy original. I would understand why old ppl don't like her cover. Because in the future someone will sing a cover of one of her songs (which NO ONE will come close!) and I'm sure like many fans of hers won't like it. But still this version is beautiful and Journey's well...sucks. They weren't great. Can't sing. But that's my opinion. Ha.

@Therealismael Hahahahahaha I'm guessing you're just a teenage girl that knows nothing about music. You probably can't play an instrument. Journey wrote this song, Steve Perry's voice has the real feeling and meaning of this lyrics. Mariah only interprets a master piece with exagerated and forced voice. That's not real music.

@Therealismael i seriously want to hit you with a pole right now, i am young and i LOVE Journey, and Mariah's vocal range is NOWHERE near Steve Perry's, Steve Perry has the highest Vocal range i have EVER heard, the only person that comes close is Arnel Peneda, which is Journey's new lead singer. Mariah is OK, but Journey is great, past, present, and future. You are sooo lucky i don't know what mental institution you are in, because i would come for you. haha, stupid people on Youtube. haha XD

really mariah sung it find its nice to add some 21 century into it journeys version is old although she didnt remake this song till like 1997 but still sounds better and shes not showng off she doesnt need to she sounds better than singers now
