Amazing how there is so much more to this musical and the score. and yet the biggest thing that people take from it and in particular this song is that Maria says she feels gay.. and so many people take the word Gay in the wrong context. Gay was used back then to mean happy and merry.. Ok done ranting.. love this musical... reminds me of stories that I was told growing up by my grandmother.

And her character in burlesque was like a rags to riches one and it's just more fitting to have her singing there not so perfect.Plus being a burlesque performer.Kinda of like whenAudrey sang Moon River.It's just relative.It's hard to explain it in words.it's just a gut feeling to do it that way

Actresses like Natalie Wood and Audrey Hepburn could sing fairly well but film producers opted to go with the best singing voices. I read on Reuters just now that Natalie's death is to be "re-examined". With a news conference to happen later today. There's been rumours over Nat's death for years. I hope this generates some kind of closure for her family and friends.

This performance is outstanding and is arguably what Natalie is best remembered for. West Side Story is the greatest musical ever made. The film is rightly remembered as a classic.
